While IO Interactive is working away at the next console version of Hitman, Square Enix Montreal has revealed that they're also working on a game featuring the famed hired gun for smartphones and tablets. According to a post on the Hitman blog, they had "total creative freedom" to come up with a concept that would work well on mobile devices but still retain "the essence of what a Hitman game is." What they came up with is pretty unexpected, and also sounds pretty awesome. It's an isometric turn-based strategy game called Hitman GO, and Squeenix Montreal summed up what it's all about quite well:

Hitman GO is a turn-based strategy game with beautifully rendered diorama-style set pieces. You will strategically navigate fixed spaces on a grid to avoid enemies and take out your target or infiltrate well-guarded locations. You really have to think about each move and all the Hitman tools of the trade you would expect are included; disguises, distractions, sniper rifles and even 47’s iconic Silverballers.

It sounds really intriguing, and reminds me of another mobile-friendly spinoff from several years back called Metal Gear Ac!d which did an awesome job of capturing the Metal Gear feel but completely repackaged it in a different game type. And it was excellent. I'm hoping for something similar from Hitman GO, which Square Enix Montreal says is "almost ready to go" and should be undergoing testing in the coming weeks. We'll bring you more news on Hitman GO as it's available.

I can see this working out great on mobile devices. If we can't move anymore because he's "tired" from timers I can imagine how the forum discussions will be, as per usual.

  • Pocketnova

OH YES! This looks amazing. I love TBS games, and the Hitman games are a great setting for one. I really can't wait for this.

  • JCho133

I love Hitman. The board game look is cool

  • curtneedsaride

Hopefully it translates well. The thing I loved most about Hitman games was the atmospheres they created through graphics and music. I hope this comes through in the different levels. I'm not getting too much atmosphere from the little yard scene, but I'll be looking forward to its release.

Gotta give respect when they try and push the envelope and come up with a different method for an existing and successful game. I know its too early too judge but im digging the look and style, another one for the watchlist.

  • Boris Nguetie

what the flap?!! so this is the hitman for ios i've been waiting for all this long?! they should just cut the crap and make a flapping EPISODE 2 FOR DEUS EX!!

    • MaqueGenio

Clearly a step back from Deus Ex. Seems we are back to 2009
where every imaginable effort from "big boys" on ios turned out to be
nothing but shitty cash grab spin offs. Maybe thats not the case here
but I cant help thinking why couldn't they make something more along
the lines of Dead Space (ios).

  • Eseres

OOOOOOOOH YEEEEEEESSSSS!!! Please! Please!! Oh pleaseeeeeaaase! Do make this a good one! For the sake of the Holy Grail and all the other stuff! If you can make this game good, I'll throw my money so hard at you that it will hurt for months LOL

  • ZarieoZ

I would like an option to watch this, there is no watch button for this article, it also happens alot with other news.

    • http://twitter.com/JaredTA Jared Nelson

Sorry that was my fault, forgot to tick the box for "Upcoming game" Should be able to add it to your list now. Out of curiosity, what other games are you unable to watch list?

      • ZarieoZ

No problem. Thanks for replying I appreciate you hunting the news for us. Anyway, it happened a few times before but I can't remember. The only one I can recall is the Rodeo Games news (oh man I love that studio) but I gave you the benefit of the doubt since it's not really an upcoming news & you know nothing about it so there is no reason to put the watch button, but since I love the studio I was hoping I can watch the news till it become a game πŸ˜‰ so I would make sure I wk t miss it πŸ™‚

      • http://twitter.com/JaredTA Jared Nelson

Ah I see. Yeah generally if a game doesn't have a name yet you can't add it to the watch list. It's possible we can make up a name like "Unnamed Rodeo games project" or something, but later on when the game does get a name, it gets sort of messy.

      • ZarieoZ

Lol yeah that's why I didn't comment on the the Rodeo article asking for one, figured it doesn't make sense πŸ˜‰

  • Grits n Gravy

Interested to see how this turns out. Can't be worse than the last one which was go in a straight line until the cutscene where the actual action occurs.

  • Grummie

Metal gear acid for ipad πŸ™

  • fearlesskk

Wait theres square enix in my city, montreal????

    • ImJPaul

Ya. They made deus ex the fall

      • fearlesskk

        Oh cool

  • ImJPaul

Wow. This looks really cool. Nice to see them doing this instead of another crappy 3rd person shooter that wouldn't work well on the platform.

  • Earth Vs. Me

It looks like a Hitman mod for The Sims.

  • thestapler

this is genius. and exactly what i wanted but didn't know it. i will tear this up.

  • octopus

I thought it was going to be a karting game... Disappointed.

  • repapermunky

I really wish this would've been a Hitman iOS game almost like Deus Ex... Oh well.

  • anabolicMike

Here's hoping they don't call EA for help on picking how to setup the way they make money.

  • HarryWarden

Why can't they make a premium AAA title in the vein of Republique or even EA's own Dead Space instead of slapping a popular name on a title that is not really at all like the other games in the series. Make it iPad only if need be because of screen size issues.

  • markymarkanddafunkybunch

Great looking game, sick of all the murder games though. Really is detrimental to kids.
