If you've been following along with the development of Ossian Studios' The Shadow Sun, you'll be pleased to know that the game is finally ready for release, set to hit the App Store on December 19th. Originally unveiled more than three years ago, The Shadow Sun is a Western-style action RPG headed up by a team with experience in some pretty major RPG releases of the past, like Neverwinter Nights and the Baldur's Gate series. Development has been slow-going, with bits and pieces of new info and new screens appearing periodically, culminating with the first official trailer being released last month, which you can see below.

I think the real question will be whether something that was originally slated for release in 2010 can still hold its own today, with all the advancements in technology and incredible iOS games that have been released in the time since then. At the very least, given the pedigree of the developers, I think The Shadow Sun will be an enjoyable adventure for RPG fans, but might not have the "wow" factor that it would have a couple of years ago. We'll find out soon enough and should have a full review ready in time for release. No pricing has been announced yet, but keep an eye out for The Shadow Sun to land next Thursday and hit up our forums for more.

Looks pretty good. I guess I might have to get it after I get a new iPad.

  • HansKaosu

OMG looks awesome.. I'm a big RPG buff <3

  • Goggles789

It looks amazing, but it looks more like a turn based RPG rather than an action RPG. Can't wait to play it, either way.

Everyone sing.."I'll be broke for Christmas...."

    • Nemerlebb

Been singing that tune for 2 whole years...

  • The Gamer Dude

From the vid it looks like it will easily hold it's own in 2013 ;)

  • metalmandave83

All I needed to see in that trailer was "Neverwinter Nights 2"

The design looks great. Can't wait!!

  • chaos_envoys

    Day 1 purchase!

  • MrSpud

I guess the nice thing about the long wait is that the game runs on older devices! I mean it looks 2010 to me, hopefully it's one of those game with a huge amount of content and quests. Can't wait to find out what this secretive studio has been up to.

    • greatnoob

Anything with dynamic shadows, most likely won't run on older devices or maybe even have support for them :P

  • Devok

Looks like another infinity blade with free roam at least, bet its heavily based on IAP.

    • detourne

      Are you kidding?
It looks a lot more like a cross between Ravensword and an MMO where you will have to wait for your power to refill then tap it to attack.
...oh, I fell for the troll, didn't i

    • ttocs

Looks absolutely nothing like infinity blade.

  • cthulhufan

Looks nice! Added to watch list and will probably be a day one purchase for me.

  • joaquin_ondamoon

Nice! Added to watch list. Looking for a solid RPG to play while I wait for Wasteland 2 release on PC. Any idea on a price?

  • Zenfar

Thanks for the heads up on this one.

  • Alan Miranda

Thanks for all the support! :)

@Goggles789 - No, it’s definitely an action RPG, but you have the ability to pause the game in order to give commands to your companion or adjust your equipment.

@Devok - Our gameplay is nothing like Infinity Blade. IB is all about slashing your screen and moving on rails in between fights. In TSS you get to explore freely (never any rails), and the real-time combat involves tapping the attack button, tapping your many special attack/spell buttons, and using different weapon tactics against your enemies. You also get to decide how your companion attacks.

As for being “heavily based on IAP” – not a chance! We don’t have any of that pay-to-play $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 gold coins/energy garbage. That just ruins a game IMO. TSS is a premium game with the only optional IAPs being an in-depth hint guide and some DLC starter packs with cool extra content that cater to the 3 main RPG play styles (fighter, mage, rogue).

@joaquin_ondamoon - Price will be announced on release day.
