Per our sister site, MacRumors, production of a 12.9" Retina Display is currently underway for release early next year. Sketchy rumors have circulated in the past about bigger iPads being a possibility, but this is the first we've heard of any kind of production run starting. What's neat about this, if there's any truth to it, is that the resolution of this display is going to need to reach near-4K resolutions to still meet the pixel density that qualifies as "Retina." That's going to be one hell of a screen.

Now, whether you believe this or other rumors we've seen about the 9.7" iPad getting a higher resolution screen… Or both- 2014 is going to be a really exciting year.

  • CzarBrain

    Awesome!

  • ODMay

    Ok, they gotta chill now.

  • phantom_cupcake

I just want apple to announce their controller stuff, I can think of so many games that will be so much better.

    • themostunclean

Didn't you see the huge post from earlier? First controller is coming out tomorrow.

  • Jerutix

Can you imagine how awkward that would be to hold? If the iPad "Maxi" (giggle) actually comes out, I will be shocked.

    • nini

Didn't know still making "pad" jokes were done.

      • Jerutix

I know, I know. After I commented, I realized I was quoting the MacRumors article.

  • Boris Nguetie

I don't really get the point of having a tablet which is not "mobile" anymore but hey if people like it this way.....

  • joaquin_ondamoon

At what point do we just start carrying around flatscreen TV's, lol?

    • Eseres

Man! I was going to write that LOL!

Even though the thought of a large iPad seems cool, I don't think they should call a larger iPad a "mobile device" :P
Whats going to be mobile with such a device?
But it would be cool with something like the Microsoft touch table though :D
If Apple were going to go larger with their touch devices, then I think they should go larger than just a little bit past the ordinary iPad size.
Whats the point of just adding a couple of inches?

  • Der-Kleine

If they do make a 13" (12.9") iPad they really need to give iOS a complete redesign, the current homescreen would make terrible use of that much space. And how about changing the aspect ratio and letting you run two regular iPad apps next to each other (AKA real multitasking)? I think those are two (or three) of the biggest things they'd need to change to make it more than just another iPad.

    • sbnewsom

      So windows 8? Lol

      • Der-Kleine

They'd have to add a "desktop" icon to the homescreen which sends you to the full OSX desktop experience for it to be like windows 8.

      • scykei

I thought he was saying that windows 8 tablets were doing about what you wanted with a full desktop experience.

  • chief78

iPad mini for the Nook market.....check. New massive iPad with retina to take on Google Chromebooks....check.

    • sbnewsom

Chrome books? You mean Microsoft Surface.

      • themostunclean

Yeah, because that was such a massive success that Apple needs to create a new product to compete.

    • C. Stubb

Huh? Chromebooks are Google's line of -netbooks-, which are just weak, simple laptop computers that were around waaaay before iPads.

  • Tomate Diseño

A different size of iPad that will run at a different speed and have more pixels, nope, nothing exciting (or innovative) about that but I'm sure it'll sell in its millions.

    • sbnewsom

I'm starting to get annoyed with unusual new business practice. It literally proves the apple fan base are literally sheep

      • Brown Cow

"...Literally sheep?" You'd think they'd know hooves don't work well on touch screens.

        Trust me, I know. I'm a cow.

      • themostunclean

I literally hate it when people literally misuse and overuse the word literally. This literally proves that people who look for any excuse to flame on Apple fans are literally idiots.

      • dariusjr98

Like, I totally agree with you, you know? And like, Apple needs to, just, um...like, slow down or whatever, you know? All the new devices are making me and my iPhone 4 feel TOTALLY old, like 30 years old. Like, EEEEEEWWWWW!!!!!

      • C. Stubb

I wish the mobile app would allow me to negative like comments...

      • Drummerboycroy

Two misused "literally"s in one sentence... That's got to be some kind of record... Literally.

  • Kirs

Always dreamed of an iPad Pro...when i saw the article header my eyes lighted up...only to be disappointed. I always wanted an iPad Pro that ran the Mac OS...not a beefed up iPad Reg...I own that and also the Mini...oh well, in due course..

    • iammane

This is the only way it makes sense.. I dunno. Blarf...

  • Lazer Kat

This is my dream device...BUT, i think it needs more than a bigger screen. It should be the iPad Pro, with a version of iOSX, more RAM, and a better processor.

    • YourAverageDude

I want to be able to strap mine on and use it as a jetpack

    • sticktron

      iOS is already i-OSX.
The Pro should have actual OSX.

      • Lazer Kat

        Not really.

  • dancj

I guess it might be good for people who leave their iPad at home. Personally I take my iPad with me everywhere though so I'll stick with the 10 inch.

    • Lazer Kat

      That's what she said

  • Scary Guns

This is just getting ridiculous. Why are they fearing the competition so much that they feel the need to release so many so frequently consistently? My iPhone 5 became outdated a few months after it's release... Ridiculous.

    • Jake7905

      I wouldn't call the iPhone 5 outdated, that's a little ridiculous.

      • Lazer Kat

Well, it IS outdated, by definition

    • iammane

Outdated - no. Discontinued - yesssss

    • Mess

The one consistent* rule about technology is that once you buy something, it is outdated.

In general phones are being refreshed every 12 months, if you didn't know that a year ago, you do know.

*maybe not games consoles, or TV's, or DVD/BluRay, but you get the idea

      • Tomate Diseño

I feel this is only a recent occurrence. I had the same TV from 16 until it broke down 17 years later. My Commodore 64 wasn't really "dated" for almost ten years and still works fine. Devices I've bought a matter of months ago can't run current software.

      • Retero

Times have changed. You didn't have a handheld device capable of doing more than the computers that were used when we first went to the moon. If they update something it's your choice whether or not you want it. They aren't forcing you to buy anything.

      • Tomate Diseño

Well technically they are if they make it so the most recent operating system can't run on the device and the most recent software requires the the most recent operating system.

When Apple changed to intel processors and then changed OSX so that it would only support intel native programs I lost the ability to use £1,000s worth of software I'd bought over the years. I had an eMac in the back of the office running OS9 so I could run older programs that I still needed and open archived files. It died recently and I've lost access to a huge amount of information. I think that's bad enough across a period of decades but for the current operating system to not run on a two year old device is ridiculous.

    • themostunclean

That's a ridiculous mindset to have. A few years ago maybe it was accurate, but now we've reached a point where each new iteration of a device is only a very slight improvement from the last.

    • Shrek74

Don't think their fearing the competition, apple just wants to be the company that does it first!

  • https://www.facebook.com/DigitalDistillery Scot Damn

So Jared pretty much called this.

  • KevinZOMG

Might as well slap a keyboard on it and call it a MacBook. With a touchscreen.

    • godofodd

Maybe the rumours are being misconstrued; perhaps these displays are for a touchscreen MBP with Retina Display.

  • lanights

If this comes to fruition, I shall build a pyramid out of Apple products...assuming this hasn't already been done. :)

  • obamakilledusa

    OMG 12.9 ipad YUMMY !!!

  • Kane

    But will it blend?

    • Gfish

      That is the question. :P

    • dariusjr98

God, I haven't seen those videos in quite a while. Funny stuff.

  • Adams Immersive

I'm sure they're working on lots of things including big iPads--but whether those things become shipping products soon (or ever) is another question. I think it's a matter of time. Touch computing will get larger--but probably not quite in the ways we've seen tried before!

  • Kane

Mac Mini, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro.

iPad Mini, iPad Air, iPad Pro.

Will cost you $1,949 (16gb Wi-Fi only model)

  • B3nlok

There is no way this is true. But if it is then the folks at Apple really lost their minds.

    • themostunclean

Seems like their new business model is to have a similar product for every type of device their competitors release. Exactly what almost sank them in the 90s.

    • B30

Jobs is turning in his grave.

  • Daniel Noah

So glad I jet bought an air. Thanks a ton apple

  • setarrif

Oh please Apple, do that with a widescreen aspect ratio!
Seriously, they made it for iPhone and iPod Touch, and we still have that damn old school 4/3 ratio on the iPad.
    Watching movies and playing straight console game ports (since controllers are supported) would be so much better on a widescreen iPad + TV streaming would also make more sense (-;

  • Eric Ma

Why couldn't these panels just be new displays for the 13" MacBook Pro with Retina or a Retina MacBook Air?

  • PureRumble

Im gonna pawn some birds in Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy on this little baby!

Seiously i can barely play sky gamblers when waving around my ordinary ipad 4 X-D

    • PureRumble

Seriously though they have made miscalculated guesses about iphone screen sizes in the past. I do believe in an ipad pro and look forward to it, but i dont think they're not gonna increase screen size.

  • B30

I will hang mine on the wall and use it as a home theater.

  • one.sixty.four

I think this size is tiny bit ridiculous. I think the leaked retina screens are for a MacBook Air with retina display. Because eventually every device will have retina and the MacBook Pro retina already does, so might as we'll add it to the air.

  • HansKaosu

    The iPad is big enough.

  • spike17spiegel

Now that seems a bit much. Air is perfect, anything bigger and you going to have a hard time holding it or typing. But then I guess they will release an official ipad keyboard to go along with it.

  • makaGeorge

I'd love to try some board game apps on that thing :)

  • http://www.onebagtravel.com/ OneBagTravel

The air is perfect the mini is somehow even better. Not sure About this larger screen.

How many products will they be offering??

  • tre8or

I don't understand why Apple doesn't just go for Window's Surface Pro approach and make a fully functional Mac with touch screen capability and detachable keyboard and what not. Implement the iPad apps within a full functioning touch screen mac...that'd be amazing.

  • Retero

Rumors are just rumors. Until we hear from multiple sources we can't even know if it is probable. But if they were making a new big touchscreen device it might not be an iPad. I personally don't think they would reveal something in the early part of the year, but who knows maybe Apple has some tricks up there sleeve. I'm sure whatever they release it will be great.

    • rewindx

Nah, I'm sure it'll just be a resizing of their current iPad. All of their mobile devices are basically the same thing in different sizes. It's really annoying when you think about it, such a lack of creativity.

  • Shrek74

So this would be the iPad pro, but what would it cost? Tech these days just moves so fast, don't get me wrong, I love my apple devices, but with apple being one of the richest company's in the world they like to keep everyone on their toes and interest on their products high.

  • TJF588

    Read "iPod Pro".

C'mon, Apple, I don't need your touch devices as a phone. Lemme have the 5S's power with more than 64GB already!

    • Lazer Kat

You can get the 5S's power (+some) with 128Gbs. Its called the iPad Air.

  • Techead81

Boo all these new iPads is fine, but an updated/comparable iPod would be nice. Some people still want a device that fits in their pocket and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Come on Apple...

  • TripMX

If this iPad "Maxi" device sports at least 2GB RAM and beefed up minimum storage of at least 32GB, then I'll take it more seriously. Other than that, I think it may be just a bit too big...I'm gonna start measuring some of my 12.9" books to get a "feel" for this rumor. Actually, this is basically a rumor revival, as I've already heard of this even before iPad Air's release, lol.

  • rewindx

They shouldn't waste their time adding a few inches. Instead, they should create something huge like the Pearpad from Nickelodeon shows. Look it up, it's about the size of a person's upper body.

  • zergslayer69

I'll personally wait for the pro 2 because I'm not sure how well the A7 will handle another increase in resolution.

  • tomj315

I think that the iPad pro will run on Mac OS, because they will not made just another iPad, and Apple will release the Mac OS 11, and it's making sense that it will be available on touchscreens too.

  • Museic_lver

At what point are they gonna stop releasing essentially the same product, just with a slightly bigger screen, seriously...
