Back in June Gameloft launched Despicable Me: Minion Rush (Free) to coincide with the launch of the Despicable Me 2 movie. It was a 3rd-person endless runner that had you playing as one of the adorable yellow Minions through various environments from the movies, collecting bananas for some reason and generally causing the sort of mischief the Minions are known for. Despite being yet another endless runner, we actually quite enjoyed Minion Rush in our review, with the biggest drawbacks being the optional extras in the game costing way too much in premium currency and annoying Facebook integration.
This week Minion Rush received its second major update since release, adding a brand new beach environment to run through. With the new beach environment come four new characters ready to hit the sand: a surfer, a snorkler, a fruit-headdress wearing vacationer, and a grass skirt and coconut shell bikini-clad dancer. A Minion rocking a coconut shell bikini is indeed disturbing.
Unfortunately, you’ll need a money bin a la Scrooge McDuck filled with premium currency in order to afford any of the new characters, but that’s sort of been the issue with this game since the beginning anyway. I generally have a hard time getting excited about runners anymore, but I really do get a kick out of playing Minion Rush. It’s got a ton of personality, great visuals, and a few neat tricks that differentiate from the pack. If you are at all into the Despicable Me movies, the Minions themselves, or runners in general, it’s definitely worth checking out for free.
