In June we were introduced to Fates Forever, an upcoming multiplayer online battle arena game (MOBA) from OpenFeint co-founder Jason Citron's new company Hammer & Chisel. Fates Forever has been designed from the ground up for tablets (sorry, smartphones) and for gaming on the go, and based on the single screenshot that was released back in June it showed lots of promise. Today we finally get to see it in motion as Fates Forever has a brand new official trailer.

Right now the most popular MOBA and actually the most popular game in the world period is League of Legends, a game that relies heavily on having a strong group to play with and plenty of time dedicated to focusing on seeing each and every game through. It will be interesting to see how those aspects are handled for mobile with Fates Forever, but we shouldn't have to wait too long to find out as right now the game is in a limited release phase to work out the kinks and is still slated for a 2013 release.

Check out the forums for more from the TA community and keep an eye out for plenty more on Fates Forever in the coming weeks.

    Naaaaaaaaaa

    • dribblejam

Idk. It looks pretty good to me.

      • Jason Citron

        thanks dribble!

    • Jason Citron

Hey Smoky - jason here from hammer & chisel (the guys behind Fates Forever). J/w what you didn't like about the trailer?

  • Heavnsix

    Are all the characters animals?

    • Jason Citron

For now, yeah! Would you prefer to see some human characters?

      • lepke

some do care so might as well for future heroes, a little bit of anything :)

      • A-Perfect-Gamer

nnnnnope!!! I would prefer animals over humans

    • A-Perfect-Gamer

      cause humans are overrated XD

  • yaboyrasp

First moba designed for tablets? How long has solstice arena been out?

    • torosama

Before solstice there was Heroes of Order and Chaos. Which I still play cause none of the others even come close.

      • ivansodi

Agreed. I love this type of games my favorite is heroes of order and chaos i think its awesome, i also tried solstice but for me hoc its way better, i'll give this one a try.

      • torosama

If they would get rid of touch to move in solstice it would be way better.

      • Jason Citron

would you prefer an analog stick? we also have touch to move, but it's part of a different control scheme overall from both solstice and hoc.

      • lepke

Mouse> touch> controller would be awful however, you will not see a good RTS or moba on consoles, they tried that. Let me just touch where I want my hero to go same with attacks as I would with a mouse. If that was your question?

      • Jason Citron

yeah I think we're in agreement. I think RTS or MOBA can work on tablets (but not consoles). I think we have a pretty good control scheme. But I'll let you be the judge once the game is out!

      • lepke

Hey if need beta tester let me know, latest iPad, this my name in forums for PM. Got previous experience beta testing even for dota 2 closed. Regardless again good luck hope the best, been waiting for a good moba on iOS :)

      • Rob L

yes analog times infinity! The problem with solstice is that you cant see the screen cause you are constantly dragging your hand all over the screen to move? You are blocking your own view, it is lame an inefficient.

Also, I am torosama... it's just my PC logs me in via facebook instead of my iDevice.

      • Rob L

My guild on Heroes of Order and Chaos all played Solstice to try it out. I'm level 85 on solstice and I can tell you unequivocally that the touch control scheme is utter fail in solstice.. so I hope yours is better. We all went back to HOAC and dropped solstice. I'm really looking forward to Fates, well and hearthstone hahah.

      • Jason Citron

Hey Rob - good to know. Would you mind if I e-mailed you a couple of questions about your guild and how you guys play? I'd like to understand more what you didn't like about their control scheme (and what you do like about HOAC).

      • Rob L

sure thing, you can email me direct at torosan@mchsi.com

      • RiSKOSD

I prefer floating analog for movement. generally I'm laid out playing my IPAD and having to move my left hand around the screen is awkward. Floating analog on the left side using as much of the left side as possible is perfect for the way I hold and play. Please consider this as a control option x

    • sbrevolution5

Solstice arena is a joke compared to actual Mobas

      • flashbackflip

        Yeah. The bad joke

  • darnoc703

    So no iPod 5? :(

    • Jason Citron

      Nope sorry. Only tablets...

  • ChilLama

Looks exactly like "League of Legends".

    • torosama

Is that a problem? As long as it's fun I'll play the hell out of it.

      • alex98909

LoL and fun cannot be in the same sentence (just did as an example)

      • Jason Citron

hehe. we took the game to PAX last week and showed it around. Everyone who played it had a lot of fun with the touch controls. So I hope you guys will at least give us a shot!

    • lepke

      That's the point.

  • Taclys

"First MOBA crafted exclusively for tablets"
I don't think so... However it does look promising. I'm curious to see if it uses buttons or more swiping movements, hard to tell really.

    • Jason Citron

Hey Taclys, which other MOBA is only available on tablets? I'm just curious... 'cause I actually thought/think we are the first that is *only* on tablets (not smartphones too).

By doing that it allows us to make lots of gameplay considerations that wouldn't work on a smartphone.

  • alex98909

    LoL suck, dota 2 betta

    • lepke

      Play them both ;)

      • sbrevolution5

        And be a hypocrite

  • http://www.ebog.me/ Ebog

    That's too awesome

    • Jason Citron

      Thanks!

  • flashbackflip

I remember that short article on TA and i remember the creator asking community about preferable game match time..

i hope he heard people saying it should not be as short as it is now in soltice arene (which is basically a simple PvP arena a'la in Arcane Legends, but worse)

    Watchlisted already.. Staying tuned!

    • Jason Citron

Yup! We did listen and we're aiming for a typical match to last about 15 minutes. If two really good evenly matched teams are battling it can go as long as 20 minutes. The intent is to have enough time that a game can have a meaningful "beginning" "middle" and "end"

      • lepke

Always people will ask for shorter but dota 2 is biggest online on steam and lol biggest in world so try keep that in mind even if people ask for less. Of course due to mobile devices, 20min does sound good.

      • flashbackflip

        Thank you for that, Jason!

Really looking forward and glad you decided to include minion soldiers besides main heroes!

  • Kedens

Can't have a free to play online multiplayer game that Isn't pay to win.. Or at least unbalanced.. Idk if this is free but ill only even look closer if its premium

    • Jason Citron

Our plan is to make the game free to play in the same way that League of Legends is free to play. The model is that you can pay for more options (different characters) but the different characters are roughly balanced with each other. So in any given encounter, the player with more skill should always win. When this turns out not to be the case, we get out the Nerf bat and rebalance things :-)

      • lepke

So new hero=money=better, then nerf? Sounds like LoL lol. But please make it dota 2 model, I will praise it as nr 1 new esport ;). But LoL is fine, just don't do it worse, I would love a great moba to recommend my friends and I to make a team for, tired of mouse n keyboard since I got my iPad.

      • Jason Citron

The plan is not to make new heroes OP so people buy them. Unfortunately, building a cosmetic system and all the assets like DoTA2 is really expensive and we don't have the money to do it ;-/

Our intention is to build a genuinely fun game for gamers, not a "mobaville" type of free to play money sink. There's enough of that around already. Since we're a small indie dev funded by investors who really understand games (like myself), our monetization goals are modest. We want to make enough so that we can grow the game and continue building great games.

      • lepke

Well if that is your goal and also how it pans out let me I ow if you need future investors, always open for new ideas if done well with the right people behind them. But even as a gamer, I wish you best of luck, I want this :)

  • lepke

If they make a great moba on iPad it would kill, the amount of players would be insane and I dream they can pull it off.

Besides mechanics, presentation even the heroes...

For this to work it has to be the business model of either dota 2 or LoL. If it isn't it will fail, or at least fail as a real dota. So what's the deal, export or money grab? Man I want a proper dota on the iOS.

    • Jason Citron

Thanks! Our model is going to be very similar to LoL. We are not building a "mobaville" type game. The guys at Hammer & Chisel are all xbox / pc gamers and understand what expectations are from people who play those kinds of games.

We actually have 2 "rules" of monetization at hammer & chisel:
      1) a game should never force you to stop playing
      2) pay for options, not for power.

I hope you'll give our game a chance!

      • lepke

With this business model, I have to give it a chance ;)

  • yippers

Thanks for chatting here, devs! First, neat video :) Seems pretty polished and I'll put my faith in PAX testers. Balance, hero mechanics, and pricing I don't really care that much about--that all can be patched. I'm more interested in external support, especially for features like replays, commentary, other social features, possibly ways to project the game on a TV (without requiring an expensive cable) for local tournaments, etc. All of which seem largely absent from existing mobile MOBAs, and were a high priority for Riot even since the early beta (I was lucky enough to take part), and I would attribute that support as a big factor of their success. Admittedly, that's much more difficult on mobile (Blizzard has an app devoted purely to replays), but games like Outwitters have clever workarounds. Have you guys given this much thought?

  • Daremonai

Looks very nice! I love the Lol style spell auras and healthbars, though Ill second my opinion in that Id like to see some humanoid heroes, call me crazy but as a player I connect more with something vaguely human looking than say, a rabbit. :P

  • UltimateRhodes9000

The most popular and only iOS MOBA in the world is HOC (Heroes of Order and Chaos) by Gameloft. Jason, you have given me what I've wanted for ages, more IOS MOBAs, since I love the genre I will buy the game immediately.

    • crashmonkey

um, Solstice Arena is essentially a MOBA isn't it? At least it looks like one.

      • flashbackflip

The keywords are "looks like one"

      • Jason Citron

        zing

    • Jason Citron

hehe cool! Thanks for the kind words. Stay tuned for more soon!

  • darkcheetah

    DOTA 2 ON IPAD!!! poopbroom!!?

  • famousringo

I generally detest MOBAs, but I have to admit this game looks pretty great.

    • Jason Citron

      thanks :-)

  • sbrevolution5

Are we looking at a rob you blind pay scheme ala LoL, or is it actually free to play akin to dota 2

    • Jason Citron

Its going to be more like LoL than DoTA2. Unfortunately, as an indie studio, we don't have the resources to make all the cosmetic items like Valve did! But we are hoping to keep things balanced and fair as we release new characters.

  • Michal M

As a DOTA2 player/fan I must say the game is really cool. Yesterday I've played four or five games, with all the characters and I really enjoyed this (well, maybe there were one or two drawbacks but the general impression was very positive).
Not sure if this is a proper place to leave my notes for the devs, so I'll stop my comment at this point :)
Anyway, I recommend the game as much as possible!

    • Jason Citron

Hey Michal - wow thanks! So glad you're enjoying it so far. Since the game isn't actually live everywhere... you're one of the lucky few who has played it ;-)

It would be great to learn more about the drawbacks you saw. The best place for that feedback would be on the forum linked directly from the main menu in the game. Or you can find me on twitter @jasoncitron:disqus

      • Michal M

So it's not live beta or something like that? :-P
Anyway - I have to put my kids to sleep soon. After that I'll post my thoughts on the forum. See you there!

      • Jason Citron

well it sort of is. Apple doesn't like when developers post games and say they are in Beta. So instead we have just released the game in a few countries while we work through the kinks!

  • fleshman

2013 release? This game is already out since months...

  • Maksimus247d

Make the game with lotss of heroes and make a 5v5 map pleasee

  • HIRO

Im looking forward to this game. I recently just got addicted to these kind of games in the tablet. I noticed a lot of people are concerned about the controls. Personally i prefer analog because its easier. Playing these kind of game with the touch where you want to move controls is difficult. The characters are nice but i hope you guys mix it up by making heroes that are human, goblin, machine, or elemental creatures. Im telling my friends about this we are currently playing heroes of order and chaos and im getting pretty bored because it take too much time buying new heroes. Im from the philippines and im pretty tablet owners in the philippines will go crazy for this game
