It was all the way back in October of 2010 that we posted the first screens for The Shadow Sun from Ossian Studios, and in iOS terms, that was like the dinosaur era. It's been a long time coming, but more than two and a half years later and we finally have some new images and details on this upcoming action RPG.

The premise for The Shadow Sun is intriguing. Aliens have messed with the sun for some reason, and now there is a shadow slowly making its way across the sun's face. As darkness is cast across the land horrible Lovecraftian enemies appear to wreak havoc, but there is one place that's still safe: the city of Shar. Its massive walls and defenses have protected it for centuries, but now a plague has broken out and threatens to finally bring the city down from within its own confines.

It'll be up to you to explore the world of The Shadow Sun and get to the bottom of why aliens are messing with the sun and what has brought on the plague that could topple the mighty city of Shar. It's a single-player affair, which the developers peg at around 10-15 hours long. Combat is in real-time, and there's more than 30 skills you can develop for your character to suit your style. You can also team up with one of four companions on your adventure, who each have their own personalities and attributes.

Everything sounds really cool, it's just… hurry up and give it to me already! It's not often I can still be excited about a game more than two years after its announcement, and Ossian has admitted they never meant for development to drag on for this long. However, with Ossian having their hands in such franchises as Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate II, and The Witcher over the years, I'd rather they just took their time to get it right. Even if it does take years.

The folks in our forums have been restless over the lack of news regarding The Shadow Sun too, but they still seem plenty excited for it. If you are too, then add it to your TouchArcade [Free] app Watch List to get alerts when more news hits, and look for The Shadow Sun to finally, finally release at some point this summer.

    Holy shit this looks good

  • Bool Zero

Honestly, I've never heard of this game before but having read this info and seen the screen shots I am totally on board to buy this as soon as it becomes available! This is now been added to my wish list! The premise and genre are right up my alley!

  • Chichiminpin

OMFG it's still alive. Very excited.

  • Psiufoxx

    Watch-listed. Poop-pantsted.

    • Adams Immersive

Ugh! I didn't even know that was a feature of the TouchArcade app. Wish you hadn't told me; wish I hadn't tapped the button. How humiliating.

  • Doctorossi

The screens appear to be iPad. Anyone know if this will be iPhone, as well?

    • http://twitter.com/JaredTA Jared Nelson

Yes, it will. From their website:

"A universal app for iPhone (3GS and up), iPod touch (3rd gen and up), and iPad (1st gen and up), with Retina display support. Graphics will scale with device."

      • Doctorossi

        Sweetness. Thanks, Jared!

  • eventide

    Looks really intriguing

  • Ausar

Maybe its just me but i kinda like more the screenshots from two years ago, right now all o see is a reskinned Aralon with a heavy over use of bloom

    • Allen Arcelo

Nah. Your right about the bloom effect but the old ones appeared to have much less detail. Although I wish the final product was a bit more grittier.

  • MrSpud

Looking forward to play this around Christmas time... maybe...
Nothing Ossian studio has ever said has been true so don't blame me for being sceptical. I will believe it when I play it, whenever that is.

  • Josh Dombro

Just saw this for the first time, glad I haven't been holding my breath all this time. Looks great though, definitely looking forward to it.

  • Allen Arcelo

Reminds me of Final Fantasy XII!

  • ImJPaul

Thank God they didn't pull an Epic/Impossible Studios!!!!

  • araczynski

Looks like they revamped the textures, but polygon counts appear to be on par with Dungeon Hunter 1. I.e. ugly. Can't bring myself to enjoy a game when everything looks like triangles.

  • anteye5

If possible I will instantly buy this graphics aren't a big deal to me as long as there is good gameplay and a good story.

    • fr33z33

Yeah, finally a seasoned experienced studio bringing an WRPG to iOS/iPhone. Nothing against Avalon and Ravensword, but the great graphics couldn't fool that those games were seriously lacking in what an RPG makes great - plot, characters and sensible game mechanics. Really hoping Ossian can pull it off and release a true WRPG

      • Kbom

Star wars: knights of the old republic launched a few days ago on iPad, check it out!

      • fr33z33

I know! But my iPad has been annexed by my kids and wife :D I'm waiting for something of this caliber for the iPhone

  • wortek

It took them so long for a number of reasons:
    1) They didn't had big budget, the studio is small
    2) They wanted to polish the game and details
My belief is that they also had to work on the game slowly, sort of part time because they had to earn money to work this game and they probably did outsource work for another companies.
