Back in late March, PopCap announced a beta for a Facebook version of their classic tower defense game Plants vs. Zombies, and during that announcement they casually hinted that the long-awaited sequel would be coming sometime in early summer.

Today PopCap has narrowed that release window down to just July, and they've released a humorous new teaser showing just how long-awaited this sequel really is and how it can drive some fans and industry folks alike just a little batty.

Tying into the huge wait for this sequel, it appears the game has an official name poking fun of that very thing: Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time. It's about time indeed, PopCap. The possible bummer of all this is that no specific platforms have been officially announced, but the original game is on… pretty much everything and I'd expect the sequel to be too.

However, the July release date may just coincide with PC or something, so stay tuned and as soon as we have official word on an iOS release we'll be sure to let you know. Also, as always, add Plants vs. Zombies 2 to your TouchArcade [Free] app Watch List to be notified of new stories when they hit.

YES. Some of the best news of the year. Great game, the first one.

  • blackout845

Cant wait..instant buy even with iap's..woohoo 2nd comment

  • Smartbomb

Relieved to hear it, fantastic news.

  • ZarieoZ

I was really happy upon reading the news as I've been waiting for a a long time. I decided not to, real racing was a bummer & a bad turn for good news, I suspect EA will treat us different with this but I just hope popcap won't give in like firemint did.

  • dariusjr98

Awesome. I love the first, and I'll love this one even more.

  • Oka-mi

Absolutely can't wait!!!! PvZ is by far my favorite defense game ever, my only worry is that the game will be destroyed by IAP's..

    • Smartbomb

      Surely they wouldn't 😮

I'm not totally allergic to iAPs, and their game will most likely be paid, so if they do pop some in, I expect they will be classy about it. My favourite casual game of this standard and aesthetic is Fairway Solitaire, and whilst it has iAPs they're inoffensive and suitably designed.

On the other hand, should they shoehorn timers in, i'ill most likely be reacting like the folks in the funny video... But louder.

  • Chester Keasberry

I wonder if the "It's About Time" tagline is a reference to some sort of time travel element in the game.

    • jamarohn

      Or a horrible IAP model.
      I'm kidding folks!!

    • Chumbake

I was thinking the same thing. "It's about time" will make no sense in 5 months, once it's been out for awhile if they keep the name it would have to reference the gameplay.

  • Ronte Wright

    I'm scared.

  • Josh Dombro

I don't understand why IAP is even being mentioned. PvZ had IAP (despite being a pretty expensive app by itself), and no one complained then. People are way too eager to curse IAPs, when they're not the problem by themselves, it's shady devs who are trying to game the system. Good developers and studios like PopCap can create a great game with any pricing model.

    • jamarohn

I think folks are worried about IAP because EA bought Pop Cap a while ago... And their business model seems to cash in on pay walls. I suppose time will tell. Despite the loud cries on these forums, Real Racing 3's payment model is apparently very lucrative for the business.

      • Josh Dombro

I get the whole EA fear (though I think that's overblown too), but it still seems unnecessary. I can't imagine they'd make the game unplayable with IAPs, and if people enjoy they game they'll be fine paying for things anyway.

    • Happy W

Hmm. Could be that people are worried about Plants Vs Zombies 2 not out of any hysterical hatred for IAP but simply because they've played PopCap's last two games.

Both Solitaire Blitz and Bookworm Heroes are freemium, "social" games, jam-packed with consumable IAP.

      Solitaire Blitz has timers.

  • B30

Hopefully they won't make another Electronic FART outa this franchise.

  • DannyTheElite

    This will be freemium

    • ptdshiznit818

      Blasphemy I say!

    • Zeldaniac

I agree but for the life of me I am unable to "like" that comment.

  • Nick

Now that Popcap is in EA's hands, I'm terrified that the premium game we love is going to be turned into a soulless ghost of its former glory.

PvZ is still to this day one of only 2 defense games I enjoy. The second being Kingdom Rush, and even that didn't get nearly as much play.

I'll keep my fingers crossed in hopes it won't be F2P, but I don't have a lot of hope.

    • KenGriffeyIII

I think it will be but I won't discredit the game just for being F2P. I think they actually did a pretty good job of that on Real Racing 3 to be honest. I just can't think of anything Popcap has done since EA bought them so I really don't know what to expect.

  • Silent Rocco

The first was a pretty fun game. Yes. Like Angry Birds. But like Angry Birds, I find it totally overrated. But the commercial is ACE!

    • dancj

      Really nothing like Angry Birds.

      • Silent Rocco

Sorry, didn't mean the content. Was just referring to the overall hype.

  • TeddyNYC

A few seconds of gameplay would've been nice. I just hope EA doesn't simcity it up somehow.

  • eventide

    A Major Nelson

  • poorwealthyman

Maybe 'its about time' refers to the plot of the game... it is about 'time'.

Time? Ahh, perhaps they mean timers? Like Freemium games - wait 10 minutes for your plant to come alive, 5 minutes to regenerate suns, and 2 minutes to start attacking zombies! That's it!

  • airwa1k

Love that fat rage nerd made it to the thread.

  • Robert McGovern

So who were some of those fans? A couple looked familiar.

    • eventide

I know Major Nelson of XBOX360 spokesperson fame was one of them.

      • Robert McGovern

  • iValerio90

    Its a freemium farm builder.

  • themostunclean

Hopefully they put all the time they spent NOT giving the original game iPhone 5 support (as well as taking forever to go retina) into making the sequel.

  • _the_escape_artist_

"Breaking news. It's eleven pm and still no sequel." Hahaha.

  • SKamiTheFly

Remember. EA bought over PopCap. Smell them DLC plants.

  • Zeldaniac

My guess? Gameplay will be the same, exceeeeppt this one little element: you'll have a "farm" where you can grow seeds once you find them, but as the game progresses they take longer and longer amounts of time (unless you buy Crazy Dave's stopwatch, aka the premium currency). Also, you'll have to be online to play at any moment for no real reason.

I love PopCap, I've been with them since the release of Peggle for PC and before (Astropop, anyone?), but their partnership with EA scares me.

  • King Random

    Be Smart EA......

  • HisDivineOrder

I imagine the game is actually about time travel. Isn't that the hip thing to do now?

  • friv

it is a good game and I still play it often the spare time

  • Keithustus

PvZ2 will suck: PopCap layed off PvZ creator George Fan.

  • Juegos Friv

Plants Vs. Zombies are one of the most exciting games I've ever played. Hopefully the new version will bring a lot more interesting

  • Friv

I still play it often the spare time.

  • Ebog

This video funny huh. I also quite liked those games, it is quite common that
