Epic Games is shutting down Impossible Studios, the developer behind Infinity Blade: Dungeons. As a result, the game has been put on hold until publisher Epic figures out "the future of the project," a post on the Epic Games blog says.

Impossible Studios was formed around six months ago and was staffed by a group of ex-Big Huge Games developers. The last time we heard anything about Dungeons was back in October 2012 when Epic announced that it would delayed into 2013.

This is good i think.I mean if there's anything to learn from this is
that Apple at least should think twice before use their show to
prematurely announce and promote unfinished games. Come on, Its not
like this is something new to Apple (Hallo @ Macworld anyone?). Oh, and
what the hell happened to that Clumsy Ninja app that was announced late
last year at the iPhone event? Or how about Real Racing 3 delay?
If anything i think Apple will finally take gaming more seriously.

      • http://twitter.com/Sanuku Sanuku

NaturalMotion Games has realized that Clumsy Ninja wasn`t the right App to go with and then...CSR Racing happened. The Rest is History.

      • agentblank

Apple didn't know this would happen. Think before you post.

      • Doctorossi

        I think that's his point.

I love halo... Makes me wonder what would've happened if it was never bought by Microsoft(Sorry to be off topic) This is very displeasing though, infinity blade dungeons looked amazing!

      • http://twitter.com/JamesMobot James Fletcher

        Quality is all that matters.

I wish people appreciated developers taking the time to do things right and not being afraid hold off it it isnt perfect.

  • toxiccheese

With all the work and investment that was already put into the game, I'm pretty sure it will eventually come out. No worries.

    • Adams Immersive

Hopefully... but Epic was bringing Unreal Tournament 3 to Mac years ago, and their programmer even posted a screenshot of the nearly-finished product running in OS X... and it never happened! Leaves me worried.

      • toxiccheese

That game didn't do very well at all. Total sales, were very disappointing. Makes sense that Epic decided not to bother... If it won't sell well on Windows then it will sell even worse on Mac. But Infinity Blade is a different story. No way they will leave it to die, it's a huge money maker and they know it.

    • Patrick

They could always decide on bringing it back to Xbox live and what about IB3? Heres hoping it aint another novella.

  • http://twitter.com/DotComCTO DotComCTO

NOOOOOOOoooooooo. This is a total bummer. I was really looking forward to the release of this game. It looked so promising. Things must have really gone awry for Epic to basically fire the dev team.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/James-D-Dunn/679068624 James D. Dunn

They didn't fire them. They are getting 3 months severance pay for the current "company" and the option to be folded into other in-house teams. (From Digital Trends)

Either way, seems like something that would be uncomfortable to play on an iPhone.

    • http://www.facebook.com/manvinder.s.singh Manvinder Sony Singh

      Apple only

  • istako

This was the most anticipated iOS, or mobile for that matter, game for me personally ever and they do THIS?! Why? No good reasons!!! Its bound to come out, because everyone wants it as soon as possible, but this is just an much unneeded and unwanted delay. An Hulu lied that it is coming out this month... I had my hopes so damn high... We need to do a petition for this, seriously... The iPad needs a good Diablo clone so bad and this was my only hope.

PS: Like if you think we should make Blizzard port Diablo (1) for the iPhone and iPad. With multiplayer, naturally. :D

    Still, extremely sad news...

    • riggysmalls

Dungeon Hunter 2, not 3, is probably the best Diablo clone available right now.

      • istako

The single fact that it does not play like Diablo speaks for itself. For instance touch control would have felt times beter. Although cant say much more than that, have not played it. I've played 3 and I'm judging half by it. Probably should check it out...

      • themostunclean

3 is a completely different style game. It's an arena fighter. There's absolutely no way you can judge 2s "Diabloequeness" without actually playing it. You admit this yourself so why bother commenting about it?

  • pauldavidmerritt

End Result - They are quitting the project, are not going to release it. They are putting information 'On Hold' so they continue to receive publicity from gamers. Call it: Worry Tactics/Scare Marketing. Don't be fooled. We are not going to see this game released.

    • HelperMonkey

So they are "scare marketing" to build buzz for a game they won't be releasing by telling the public that they won't be releasing it? Isn't that also called, like, telling the truth? How nefarious!

      • pauldavidmerritt

You must not really understand marketing tactics from companies in many different industries. Lets pretend they we not releasing this game. Then, I want you to think about how much promotion Epic is getting with all the 'talk' about this game (that will not be released). Also, click on your internet explorer icon and and Google the term 'treat your customers like cattle'. It's an old-age marketing strategy that takes advantage of [negative attention IS STILL PROMOTIONAL ATTENTION]. Take business course 101 and grow a head on your shoulders.

      • pauldavidmerritt

And, NO. It's not to market a game they're not releasing. It is to market their developer name and ensure more success from buyers of their next releases (that they are working on as we speak, but not promoting yet). Learn Game Dev business.

      • Illuminerdy

You kind of lashed out at this dude. Also marketing tactics and strategies should be the purview of soulless neocons, not excited gamers. It sickens me to see evaluations of artistic endeavors riddled with armchair marketing lingo and analysis. Dig deeper into the form, not what sells it.

      • themostunclean

I'd think if you knew squat about the "the game dev business" you'd have an avatar next to your name. You come of sounding like a half self educated, ignorant prick.

      • pauldavidmerritt

Well, if you can name one thing the govt. cannot get away with, and explain how much research on this topic you've done, then it might be worth a good conversation! Area 51. The AIDS Hoax. Fluoride in our water and how it can destroy our teeth. All are scare tactics or population control. Truly look it up :)

      • homosaur

Lol Apple responsible for 9/11, also fluoride

      • MidianGTX

I was actually making a joke about you being a conspiracy nut. I'm not sure if being bang on the money makes it more funny or less funny.

  • inteliboy

I'm pretty sure that game was going to print them money. What an odd decision.

  • Psiufoxx

Did anyone actually click over to Epic's site and read their blog post? Tim Sweeney commented: "It was a bold initiative and the Impossible folks made a gallant effort, but ultimately it wasn't working out for Epic." Not a good sign. :(

  • ltcommander_data

Hopefully this is purely an internal issue between Epic and Impossible Studios and not because of concerns about mobile gaming, iOS gaming, or other broader issues.

  • TomCrown

Seems that some of the causes of the 38 studios collapse followed with Impossible and they couldn't achieve their great new vision for the game in a reasonable time frame.

Epic should have left the game with the developers that had it almost done.

    Laaaame!

  • Wizard_Mike

    Laaaaaaaaaame!

I kind of figured they ran into development problems, or else we would have had this game in our hands already. But as successful as Infinity Blade has been, I would have never guessed they would have halted development on it.

  • Graison Swaan

    Kickstarter?

  • Blopper90k

Hmm.. I was wondering if this might happen to this game. I always thought the videos made the controls look kinda awkward at best. I feel like it couldnt have ever lived up to its name. But here is to hoping I'm wrong and it does come out and is amazing.

  • chamelore

This sucks. I am a huge infinity blade nerd (yes I even bought the book.) and I was really looking forward to this game. I even deleted all other games but infinity blade 1 and 2 and minecraft. Dang.

  • JRaynor

epic should just give this ibd to Chair and hope for the best and move on to ib3

PS: It's gotta suck been a ipad 3 user

  • chank

Well, maybe it'll still be released later on. PLEASE!!!

  • mashead2000

  • nothingreal

At what point does it make sense for apple to jump in and spend a few million to back a few of these ambitious projects? It's a drop in the bucket to them and a handful of amazing platform exclusives couldn't hurt.

    • ImJPaul

I'm with you man. The AppStore has been very dry since the new year. The AppStore is IMO what REALLY sets apple apart from android or windows phone. But I feel like when your # 1 exclusive game (over $30 million grossed on the first 2) can't find a way to make it to the AppStore then you need to intervene and make it happen. I mean, they showed it off at an Apple event. They've gotta worry about Epic making them look like chumps. PLUS, this is quite possibly the most anticipated game on iOS. It pays for itself and then some. I have faith it'll still come out. Just not so sure on when. We'll see I suppose.

  • Gamer_Kev

Surprising news, as popular as the Infinity games were, you'd think they'd want to turn out more.

  • LCB12321

Reminds me of when a team from Sega was trying to get out that sonic game on the Saturn to compete with Mario 64. I think two people almost died trying to make the game. If you can find it on the Internet it looked pretty cool almost like Mario galaxy in a way, I remember it had a cool fisheye view to it. Sadly it never came out, hope that's not the case here.

  • Soarel

Bummer. However, I was always more excited for Oceanhorn.

    • Patrick

that might as well be scrapped to.

      • themostunclean

        Nope

  • Th3R3n3gad3

NOOOO!!!!! (destroys pillow and starts crying)

  • Patrick

Well this is a downer. I've been anticipating this game since it was
announced then THIS happens. I don't understand, IB was such a breakout hit and marked a new age for mobile gaming and yet, still, iOS games seem to have trouble when it comes to finishing up the process. Compared to games on mainstream platforms, mobile games aren't as taken seriously despite the growing demand. We've got games like Forgotten Memories that take forever to finish. It a just seems undervalued.

  • readysetboom

Wow epic really sux now. First shadow complex 2 was put on hold and now this. What is wrong with them. They are not developing their best franchises.

  • lewsheff

I hate angry birds anyway :/

  • cole1400

I feel bad for this group of developers because they keep getting shut down even though they put out great content.

  • vesp67

.... You have got to be kidding me! After this long wait they now put in on HOLD?!?! WTF!! This game better be worth it if they actually release it someday!

  • Jray

Gaming on ipad sucks...too bad really.

  • Jray

My new nickname for apple is 'Legend of Zelda...because their games look like they were released in 1986...seriously though, Apple, you might want to recalibrate, when your graphics standard seems to be set by Duck Hunt. Lol
