If you've found yourselves among the (many) people dropping comments in our "Coming Tonight" posts over the last couple weeks asking where in the world Fieldrunners 2 is, well, some news just hit on Twitter that should get you excited:

So, expect to see it next Wednesday at 11:00 PM Eastern... Unless of course they pull the simultaneous worldwide release hijinks like Rovio did with Amazing Alex. If this is the first you've heard of Fieldrunners 2, we've posted quite a bit about the game. Mash this link to see all sorts of preview coverage including videos, screenshots, and even an interview with its creators.

    Day one for sure.

    • AlecShobin

Awesome! Thanks for your support. You're going to have a blast :)

  • Flare_TM

an about f...ing time! Let me at those infected syringe-hurling towers!

    • AlecShobin

Yes! The plague towers are insanely awesome. Just wait till you see all the other sweet weapons we've included :)

  • stormchild

Still not thrilled about having to buy this separately for iPhone and iPad, but this looks too good to miss.

    • AlecShobin

We're putting in a lot of time making the different versions perfect for each device, including the glorious retina display on the new iPad. So rest assured that even though there might be separate versions, the game will be over flowing with an incredible amount of content and thoroughly customized for each device.

Don't hesitate to post any other questions you have!

      • hman

FYI, I bought the first iPhone version when there was no sound! Who remembers that? And the subsequent versions. I hope there is a buy all levels option later and we don't have to buy each level individually.

      • AlecShobin

I see you've been with us since the beginning! Our team frequently talks about how far we've come since the original, soundless Fieldrunners with only a single map. The music and sfx in Fieldrunners 2 were all professionally made by a fantastic team of audio experts, so be sure to play the game with the music on :) the game also comes loaded with around 25 levels, so it might take you a while to get through those before you want any new maps.

Thanks for being a fan after all these years! You are in for a treat :)

While I did buy Fieldrunners the day it came out, I actually didn't know it lacked sound, because for me, *every* app (effectively) had no sound when the App Store first launched. I had a first-gen iPod touch, which had no speaker, and generally didn't bother plugging in headphones to play games. Never heard the sounds in most of the games until I upgraded to a 3rd gen about a year and a half later.

      • stormchild

Yeah, I understand that, and you guys certainly deserve to be paid for your work. I loved the original (bought it the day it came out); it was one of the first tower defense games, and nobody ever made a better one.

I think my aversion to buying separate iPhone/iPad versions stems from the large number of apps (especially games) that are basically just scaled up with little-to-no changes, then sold separately for 3-4 times more. Not every iPad-specific app is guilty of this, though, and quite honestly I should remind myself once in awhile that I used to pay $40-50 for GameBoy games.

Can't wait till this one lands in the App Store.

Hey guys! Everyone at Subatomic Studios is thrilled to have finally announced the official launch date for Fieldrunners 2!

We've literally spent years crafting the ultimate tower defense experience - building everything from the ground up, factoring in a lot of your suggestions from the original game, and stuffing the game with a ridiculously huge amount of content. And we can't wait to hear what you all think of it!

Big thanks to all our fans for their support over the years. Let me know if you guys have any questions about the game!

men, nothing really beats field runners in terms of concept and gameplay. i first met this game in playstation portable and in the ipad afterwards. i really love this game. this is by far the best tower defense game. high replayability. please release the ipad version of field runners 2 soon! thank you!

  • America12345

Is the iPad version coming out at the same time

    • AlecShobin

The iPad version will launch shortly after the iPhone/iTouch version comes out. We want to make sure that the experience is absolutely perfect on each different device, and the staggered launches allow us to do that.

      • America12345

I don't want to sound impatient but I hope you aren't using 'soon' in such a relative matter like it gets released 2-3 months afterwords. I've been waiting for this game/update to fieldrunners for a long time. Thanks for the reply

      • AlecShobin

We're hoping the same thing! It primarily depends on how many things we do to make it a unique experience. Do people want a lot of new features or do they want it to be the same on both devices?

  • agentblank

Yes! I can't wait to play this game right at 11:00 next week. 20 towers and 25 maps sounds epic.

    • AlecShobin

Sweet! Thank you! I predict a ton of awesome tower defense action in your future :D

    • Sojourn

That's a lot of towers. And a lot of maps!

Can't wait for the iPad version.

      • AlecShobin

We're very eager to start showing off our game on that amazing retina display soon. Stay tuned!

  • prayer4eev

well in terms of strategy and overall feats the first game was shallow at best but looked nice, are there any improvements in this version or again the main selling point is casual appeal?

    • Flare_TM

Mate theres LOADS of improvements, havn't you been reading Touch Arcade's previews?

      • AlecShobin

Haha! You rock :) Good looking out!

    • AlecShobin

Great question! While this is a sequel, we've done a lot more than just adding content. The core gameplay revolves around an entirely new game engine we built in house, based on the evolving needs of TD fans. This new engine revolutionizes enemy behavior by allowing each fieldrunner to determine its own optimal path through the battlefield. The swarms of realistically moving enemies dynamically change their strategies in real time as you place new towers - charging through trenches, over bridges, and into tunnels to avoid your attacks. It's worth mentioning that the new engine is built for 3D (despite the 2D artwork), so we can now make multi-leveled maps, adding a totally new aspect of gameplay that you need to incorporate into your strategies.

There's a lot more I can say, but I want to leave some surprises for you if you decide to check out the game :) Overall, it's been four years since the original Fieldrunners came out. Our fans have grown, their tastes have matured, so we designed Fieldrunners 2 to meet their more developed expectations. Everyone at Subatomic considers themselves a connoisseur of TD games, and we made the type of TD that we would want to play. So, I hope you take the time to check out our new game - we've put a lot of love into making it, and I bet you'll have a lot of fun playing it :)

Let me know if you have any other questions!

      • prayer4eev

yeah, i've should read the article before, sorry about that. great to see there are a lot of improvements over the first game. and extremely nice to response to my quite harsh comment. very nice.

      • AlecShobin

        :D

      • stormchild

Just for the record, it kicks all kinds of ass that you're here answering everyone's comments and questions, without even making us come to you. Very few software companies are this responsive.

      • AlecShobin

Wow, I really appreciate that! Glad you guys like me swinging by to answer questions :) Didn't want to seem overbaring, but I happen to be a dev that also loves chatting about our game. You guys rock!

  • Playpunk

Yes, I have another question: it is unclear to me whether the iPad and iPhone versions will have totally separate content ( much like the long awaited, yet never seen, tiny heroes for iPad, whatever happened to that?). Will it be worth it to me to buy both versions? Thanks! Really looking forward to this, I'm a huge fan!

    • AlecShobin

A lot of the details about the iPad version are still completely up in the air. We can re render artwork for the retina display relatively quickly, but feedback on the iPhone version will play a major part in deciding which other additions we add to the iPad version. So, we'll have more info about the iPad SKU after the iPhone version launches.

  • Exile

    Nice

  • araczynski

why is it so hard for devs/pubs to include a price in their release statements?

    • AlecShobin

We haven't finalized a price yet, but we're actively discussing options. To be honest, the price probably won't be nailed down until launch, but we'll definitely let everyone know if we make a decision before then. Sorry for the inconvenience!

    • AlecShobin

Just locked down the price - $2.99 :)

      • araczynski

thanks :)  since you guys didn't budge much on the previous ones, i'm assuming 2.99 it will be for quite a while :) looking forward to wednesday night :)
