Earlier today Stainless Games announced that their cult classic vehicular combat game Carmageddon is heading to iOS and Android this summer. In an update post on their Kickstarter page, Stainless revealed that the mobile version of Carmageddon has received a number of neat enhancements including improved visuals, Game Center integration, and the ability to save replays and upload them directly to YouTube.

Carmageddon for iOS will also come as a Universal app and with multiple options for touch controls, including specific touch integration like a gesture-based car repair mechanic. Here’s the real kicker though: As a thank you for all those who helped recently fund their campaign for the upcoming PC reboot of the franchise Carmageddon: Reincarnation, Stainless is releasing the mobile version of Carmageddon for free during the first 24 hours.

There’s no solid date yet for Carmageddon mobile beyond the vague “summer” timeframe, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted.

This was a quality game back in day. Looking forward to playing this on my iPad :)

    This is amazing news.
It's exactly why I LOVE the iOS gaming scene more than ever. Not because the game is free. I'm gonna wait and pay the guys because they deserve it....... But because I have been dying to play this game again but there is it will run on a modern mac OS and now all of a sudden I'll have it on my iPad!!

      Agreed bro! Agreed 100%

I still have the cd-rom tucked away somewhere...man, this makes me feel old. I would gladly pay for a if they overhauled the graphics; I remember running this game in 800x600 and can't for the life of me Remember if it supported any graphics acceleration...maybe it supported the Voodoo card? I also would love to know if the Splat Pack expansion is included.

Added to watch list without a further delay. ;)

I worked on Carmageddon 2 and they were pretty happy years indeed. I'm glad to see "that other" Isle of Wight studio is coming to iOS now... :)

Then I hold you responsible for the loss of an entire summer playing this game :D
I recall now that I only ever had the demo for Carmageddon 1 - but I purchased Carmageddon 2 for my mac and played it all summer long with my best friend. Good times. Great game. Thanks for the hard work you no doubt put in.

There's two guys who made that game really what it is. Sadly I'm neither, but it was still a fun project to work on. Take a bow, Patrick Buckland and Kevin Martin.

Wow. Dude, Carmageddon 2 was a HUGE part of my adolescent years. You have no idea. Thank you so much for your work.

Must be insane to be part of something that touched so many people's lives like that.

Don't forget to add iCloud support :)

Balder's Gate, Myst Live, and now Carmageddon?!? Shut up and take my money!!!

I have a feeling we are all looking back at this game with rose-colored glasses on.  It can't possibly live up to the hype we are all giving it, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway, because this was one of my all-time favorites.

I have a friend who loved to play carmagedon on my comp back in the day, she never tried to win anything. Her whole enjoyment with the game was the gruesome way you could dispose of cows. Happy times!

  • JCat_NY

Great to see this past game that have meat on their bones making it to ios! Very exciting...

  • CrazyEoin

What a great game, can't wait for the iOS and reincarnation version on pc/Mac

As a teenager (who DOES like some old games by the way!) This really doesn't look that good. I think it's more for people who've played it when it came out.

I mean, one of my childhood games was spectre. I bet a lot of people would say it looks bad too! It probably IS to people who haven't played it before!

  • Schnapple

Anyone think Apple might have a problem with the violence in this game? If memory serves, the console ports back in the day (PSX, N64) replaced the humans with zombies and the blood was changed to green.

    • macatron

Good point, but I can't really see this being any more offensive than the Grand Theft Auto series (which is doing quite well on the App Store). :-)

  • macatron

Whoa!! First Duke Nukem 3D gets an update that makes it actually playable, and now THIS?!? Wow!! This summer is really starting to shape up!! :-D This has officially been added to my Watchlist (which is an AWESOME feature btw)!! :-)

  • bem69

Wow, Carmageddon??? Loved this game! Can't wait to play it on the iPad!

  • Steven McDonald

Worryingly, I dont' see any cunning stunt bonuses!
It better have them - the onscreen bonus notices made that game!
Nothing better than ploughing off a high loop straight into a pedestrian on the ground or something and being awarded one!

Looks like red not green blood - so looks like blood patch has been applied! lol

  • Blodia

    Oh mais oui!!!!

  • jcflyingblade

Hope they keep the Fear Factory soundtrack from the original game (and playing in the trailer)!

  • shinydisco

    Anybody have any updates?
