Alright so I just screamed like a teenage girl in the front row of a New Kids on the Block concert. This morning Wizards of the Coast announced that a new installment of their Duels of the Planeswalkers series of Magic: The Gathering games was coming. Granted, this isn't much of a surprise since Duels has historically been incredibly popular, so much so that quite a few people (myself included) directly attribute the game to the resurgence in interest in the physical Magic: The Gathering card game. What is surprising is that among the announced platforms, Wizards also dropped the bomb that the game will be coming to the iPad.

Details beyond that are basically non-existent, but it's safe to assume that Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 will play just like its predecessors, except with the inclusion of new cards from this year's sets. I'm stoked as hell, not only because I've been playing M:TG basically my entire life, but because I think there's lots of interesting things that can be done on the iPad with the IP. For instance, a Magic Online client for the iPad?

Just take my money Wizards, take it all.

*throws money at the screen* TAKE IT! TAKE IT NOW!

The iPad, with Baldur's Gate, and now Magic....oh, man....seriously. All we need now is Diablo 2 and Roller Coaster Tycoon on this thing and...I can't breathe...I can't....(faints).

    • TouchGamePlay

I don`t really need Diablo on my Mobil Device when Chillingo is already working on a Franchise that could become as big as Diablo is currently if they don`t go the same Way as Gameloft did go with Dungeon Hunter...

      • Cat Astrophy

        Which franchise is that?

      • Joe Burkett

what game are you referring too?

  • Hunter Wolf

(waiting for Halle Berry to do mouth to mouth on me).

    FINALLY!!! *High-Fives All Around*

So will this be based on the old PC game Duels of the Planeswalkers?  That is the only game of that ilk that I am familiar with, but I loved it, especially the adventuring aspect to build up your deck.

    • Don van Galen

If the 2013 version has anything close to the old version, i'm toast...
No more sparetime, please let this be true!! I still have a silly old pc specially for running dotp... Rofl

Awesome! I play 2012 a good bit on Steam and have often said to myself, "This would be great on the iPad". Well, lo and behold!

I know a lot of the hardcord Magic folks complain that the Duels games are too restricted in terms of deck construction, but for someone like me who just wants to play a game of Magic without spending all the time and money creating the world's most efficient deck, it's a fun and rewarding game.

Great! Im playing MTG since 1994 🙂

  • Heath Newton

    Awesome news!

  • Cat Astrophy

MTGO would be huge! I will support this title even though I'm not a huge fan of the deck restrictions on Duels just to help motivate Wizards to port MTGO.

  • TouchGamePlay

Taking a look at the current Version of Magic: The Gathering on Steam this one could possible break the Record for most iAP ever listed on a Mobil Game since the Appstore was open. I really hope that I`m wrong and the Developer will release a Full Version and not some Freemium with many dozen iAP...

  • Spibmeister

been waiting for them to do this. too bad I don't have an iPAD...

  • Matthew Vinson

About time Wizards took a step into the mobile world! Now, jump the rest of the way in and give us a fully functional MTGO on iOS!

  • squirpe

Duels of the Planeswalkers got me back interested in MTG after years collecting cards and spending thousands. Kard Combat is alright, but been hoping for this game ever since I got an iPad last year.

    Great news!

  • Rirath

I still have and play the original DotP from the 90's, so I immediately purchased the revamped DotP for XBLA, then 2012 for Steam, and now I'll get DotP 2013 for iPad.  It keeps getting better, though I miss the freedom of the original.

*Proceeds to throw more money in the pile already accumulated by previous posters.*

I swear if Apple keeps getting these A-Listers, there will be no reason whatsoever to own either a Nintendo 3DS or a Vita.

    Just plain win. Period.

  • Will Buckingham

Oh this has the potential to just ruin my free time.  I played this game incessantly from 3rd Edition to the end of the Wrath cycle...  If they make this iPad version right it could be the digital crack to draw back a lot of people.  I can only pray the almost inevitable in-app purchases won't break the game.  I'd pay for set expansions, but digital packs just will not fly.

  • Fokion Harokopos

Yes. Now that's a real iPad game. Finally, they're starting to get it.

  • Bridget

This would be GREAT...... if it actually let you construct your own deck the way you want to.

I have a hard time seeing any dedicated MTG fan getting into ANY of the games in this series.   Deck construction is half of the game.   And an enjoyable half, at that.   This series does not let you do this.

    Thanks, but..... no.

  • UnSurreal

    Yes, yes omg yes.

  • FullCircle_360

I hope it comes out on Android at some point too, I never pay for games on mobile devices but I think I could make an exception for this.
