Last week, we told you about Glitchsoft's upcoming Star Marine: Infinite Ammo, a run 'n gun shooter that looks to capture the magic of classic action platformers like Contra and Metal Slug. A game like Contra demands precision in its controls due to the hectic action on screen, and it's hard to say whether or not that type of precision can be possible with virtual touch screen controls. Star Marine is hoping it's found the answer to this problem by taking a dual-stick approach to its control scheme, which is looking pretty good so far.

In our preview last week there were just screenshots for Star Marine, but Glitchsoft has just released a trailer for the game so you can get an idea of what it looks like in action.

From the trailer, a few things stick out at me as looking particularly awesome. It appears there are quite a few weapons to use, including one that looks a lot like the infamous spread gun from Contra. Also, I really like some of the enemies that are absolutely humongous, sometimes filling up the entire screen. Finally, Star Marine incorporates a feature that slows down your descent when you're falling through the air, giving you a better opportunity to lay waste to the enemies on the screen. I imagine this coupled with the dual-stick controls will allow a game like Star Marine to be quite playable with a touch screen.

Star Marine: Infinite Ammo is scheduled for a release this week, and we'll be looking to get our hands on the title to see just how well it turned out when it hits the App Store.

Possible day 1 purchase if the price is right and the controls are good.

Oh God I hope this is iCade compatible... but I don't see how it could be given that it's dual stick...

I was thinking the same thing. They could definitely build in support for it even though the touch controls are dual analog stick, and I really hope they do, this would perfectly round out my homage collection. Then again, i could just play contra on iMame lol.

It almost looks like you’re limited to six 45-degree angles—up/down/level both ahead and back—which could be doable on 8-button iCade if so. The iCade’s layout isn’t ideal for this, but maybe with some habit adjustment maybe it could work? I’m thinking it could use the black and red buttons as follows:

      • Red buttons fire left: up-left and straight-left

      • Rightmost black buttons fire right: up-right and straight-right

      • Bottom-left black button (in between the left-set and right-sit): hold like a Shift button to fire down-left and down-right instead of firing straight. (Or, swap so Shift us used for firing up. Or, no Shift button, just press both left-buttons together to fire down, say.)

That leaves 3 buttons for weapon changing, pause, whatever. (Jump using the stick.)

Alternatively, get used to firing with the left stick and moving with the buttons, since moving should only need 3 buttons. (Left/right/jump.) Unless there are jetpacks! There could even be an option where the movement buttons toggle movement on/off, to prevent fatigue.

None of that's ideal, but maybe workable in practice?

OMG! "Contra" for iPhone/iPad ! I can't tell you how awesome it is!
It's a day1 purchase for me too, but it needs full TV out support for all supported devices and support for iCade/iControlPad and 60Beat!

Hey Guys...Its iPhone/iPod only for now but it does play very well on the iPad! iCade/iCP is definitely an option as well. We're hoping to prove the concept with this release and then get into feature requests and updates including peripherals!

I should also not that the gameplay is pretty sweet with the virtual controls...we spent some considerable time dialing that in!

The better we can get the word out about the release, the better the chance we'll get some iCade/iCP into it!

    Thanks for the support!
