I wish there were more details available than the headline, but that's it. SoMoGa is responsible for the bringing the similarly fantastic old-school RPG Vay [$4.99] to the App Store, and we're expecting Lunar: Silver Star Touch to be of similar quality. We briefly chatted with SoMoGa at GDC, and the one tidbit that we can offer about Lunar is that it won't be a shoddy port by any means, this is a complete from the ground up touch-based port of the game, not a ROM wrapped in a mediocre emulator like Sega's offerings.

(Video of the PlayStation remake of the game.)

Originally released in North America for the Sega CD in 1993 and the PlayStation in 1998, Lunar was chock full of animated cut scenes, voice overs, and all the other fun stuff that they were packing on CD-ROM games at the time. We had a ton of fun playing Vay, and are totally stoked for the future release of Lunar. As soon as we get more details, you can be sure we'll post them.

Thanks you God!! Best news I've heard since the iPhone was released! I played this on the SegaCD when it first came out and loved it. I'm always on the lookout for a copy at Slackers to give me an excuse to buy a SegaCD again. Love it!!!!

I think it's a mistake to use the segacd trailer/gameplay.
If they're not doing a shoddy emulator then I would expect them to be using the psx or even psp version of the game.

In any case, I can say that this was one of the best rpg's I've ever had the pleasure of playing...

The PSP port/update was excellent -- I hope that's what they are bringing to iOS (or that at least they're aiming that high).

Vay didn't do much for me -- the mix of old-school graphics and iOS system fonts did make for an immersive experience. I hope that Lunar gets a higher level treatment.

I would rather see the Sega CD version of the game on ipod

  • stlredbird

Also, I remember them saying they were coming out with Lunar next right after Vay came out and here I am still waiting. So I'll hold my breath until I see some gameplay video or screens at least. A tentative release date is probably too much to ask.

  • Bufftbone

I wouldn't mind if they wrapped up the Working Designs PS port in an "Emulator" like Sega

  • Omegaferrari

awesome news!! im shocked and happy to hear my favorite rpg is now available on my device, do hope they bring it on ipad , like the way square is also doing a hd version of ff3.

Holy Crap!!! This... is... WONDERFUL!!!! Lunar is my all time favorite game and having the classic version on the go sounds just unbelievable!

  • Aer2

hope there's an ipad version, otherwise my wait queue is too long already with only ipad games.

The recent PSP port was very nicely done, with completely re-done visuals. Hopefully these are the assets this port will use. Failing that there's the Saturn version, which looked pretty nice, and then the old Mega CD version. The latter is seriously old school now.

The port of Vay I did play a little but thought it was extremely crude. The visuals were a bizarre mix of old Mega CD with some tacked on ultra ugly new battle sequences. It was a total mess.

Hmm.. I wonder if we can expect a port of the Mega CD classic 'Snatcher' now too? It would be perfect for touch screen, as it's a point and click adventure....

  • Relytgninroht

I bet it'll probably the classic version of the game. Doubt it will be a port of the psp remake.

  • Omegaferrari

Just do the original version, with the excellent soundtrack and story, it's just awesome, still holds up compared to the recently released jrpgs, the new psp remake is nothing like the original

Decent I guess, but... after playing FF3 for like a week, I couldn't go back to .. ahem... this

  • Omegaferrari

Now that I think about it it could be a remake but keeping the same jrpg aspects of the original(random battles ala ff3) and the original soundtrack, but for me the original would do.

oh no ........... if this game gets released ............ there goes my social life .........

  • Chinito77

I really liked Vay with it's old school cut scenes and re-vamped game play. I am hoping this release is more like the the Sega CD version and not the reworked Saturn/PSP version. I liked the music and animations of the Sega CD version.

I never played the sequel so I hope that gets released as well.

    • Jyoungblood123

I totally agree. The Sega CD version is FAR superior to the PS1 version (with it's horrible soundtrack). Here's hoping that's the one that gets released!!

  • Travis

Yay! Always wanted to play this when it was remade. Glad i'll have the chance to now. I love the victory dance when they when a battle.

First Secret of Mana, now this? I feel so spoiled!

I hope they keep all of the amazing cutscenes and voice acting from the PS1 remake.

    • Anon

I hope so too. I never made it very far into the PSP remake due to the terrible voice acting. And Lunar is my favorite RPG of all time...

      • http://morereasonsyoushouldntfuckkids.tumblr.com Chungyen Chang

what?! they replaced the voice acting? eww :(
