Open world crime games have been incredibly popular for years now, so it wasn't much of a surprise to see Gameloft release Gangstar: West Coast Hustle [$4.99 / Free / HD] which we liked quite a bit in our review. Following the success of Gangstar, Rockstar threw its hat in to the ring with Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars [$9.99 / Free / HD] which really upped the ante with a real Grand Theft Auto experience with all the depth and complexity that players have come to expect of the series. It's going to be interesting to see what Gameloft includes in the Gangstar sequel to one-up Rockstar, but the good news is we won't have to wait much longer as Miami Vindication is set to be released on the 23rd.

If you're like us and are looking forward to stealing virtual cars on the streets of Gameloft's version of Miami, check out this new trailer:

Something that immediately pops out is how low polygon count everything is, but it remains to be seen how noticeable this is when you're actually playing the game. Thankfully, we don't have much longer to wait, and we should have a review available as soon as Gangstar: Miami Vindication hits the App Store late tomorrow night.

The graphics aren't low poly. They're "retro poly."

I can't wait for this game.

looks like shit, textures, animation, and evrything else

    • RhythmMan

Well, that's not entirely true. In order to have as many objects on screen as the game does it needs to cut some polys. You ever program? It's a common issue. Most likely they need to upgrade their game engine or try a new one like in Epic Citadel. In which case most older iPhone users couldn't play it. Would be 3GS and iPhone 4 exclusive.

      • SalsaMD

At some point catering to the current technology, while retro-fitting a representation of the game to the older units...

      • SalsaMD

Should read: " At some point one has to start catering..."

      • Yrogerg212

Well... I don't see why you shouldn't have a 3GS or 4. I mean, contracts last 2 years. Then you upgrade. The 3G came out more than two years ago.

On another topic... There is a reason people don't make games PS2 compatible anymore. Eventually people upgrade or lose out.

      • RhythmMan

"I don't see why everyone shouldn't have an iPhone 4". Wow, only in America can we be so absolutely superficial and materialistic with no sense of value. Glad you can afford to buy all the most expensive new products on the market. Also glad it's not up to YOU what devices games work with. Even though I have an iPhone 4 I would never tell others they should have one. Let the market decide, it's capitalism. Go to an economics course man, gameloft is making a smart decision.

    • Scott

And some people go to other carriers after dumping AT&T and go to an ipod Touch. I swear iphone 4 owners are some of the snobbiest fanboys around-right up there with ipad owners.

      • Eyemh8

When is this coming out for the NES? All you kids that moved on from the 80s are snobby dirtbags keeping us early video game adopters upgrade when we don't really need to.

    • Rob

Just like your grammar, you might also want to google the word grammar.

There are alot more 3G phones than you'd think.
Targetting more devices means more sales for Gameloft, plus older-gen device owners don't get screwed over.

I have a 3GS, but my old IPT1G works perfectly fine if not for Apple's phasing out of iOS.
It's companies like Apple that are contributing heavily to environmental problems.
I'd bet many IPT/IPhone devices are replaced or thrown away while still in perfectly usable condition.

Animation and graphics look terrible, and with GTA on the iPhone/iPad now there is no reason to even look at this poor attempt to copy them.

    • RhythmMan

Some people don't like the top-down view in gta:ctw. Personally I prefer gangstar, but the retro gta game is good. Lots of content in it, but the gameplay in gangstar is what I enjoy. If it had online or multiplayer that would be sick!

    • RhythmMan

Btw, you're living up to your name! Lol

yes because the gta released is exactly like the gangstar series....

i could see your point if rockstar released vice city (assuming it could be done) or something for iphone but as it stands the current gangstar plays totally different. it may not be the same quality as rockstar would put out but given the devices we have who cares.

i thoroughly enjoyed GTA CTW but there is a place for both.

i'm looking forward to this, it looks better than the first.

I would love to see some open world games for the iphone where you can play a good guy, as there are people who don't enjoy playing a murderous criminal.

    • dexx0008

red dead redemption is kinda like that, can choose to be good or bad and what you do in the game affects how others react to you... not iphone of course.

just curious: what you do in the open world for missions? make ups/fed ex deliveries? pizza deliveries. only thing i can see fitting is being a detective/sheriff or something and hunting down law breakers.

without game play it would be more a tech. demo...

    • Malohkan

I was hoping the new Spider Man game would be exactly that, but it doesn't seem to have any open-world qualities to it like past Spider Man games have had.

    • Chocolate

      I agree 100%

I love the GTA gameplay, it's awesome having a big open world. But being a low life criminal is not something I have ever aspired to, in real life or in video games.

I will never understand the cultural glorification of thugs and gangsters.

Does NOT live up to my expectations. I like Gangstars better than GTA, but wow these graphics look awful :( Then again, I'm happy it will work on my iPod touch 2nd Gen.... but still...

    • tsharpfilm

It's funny... When a game like Pix'n Love Rush comes out, most of you RAVE about its awesome "retro style." But when a 3D game comes out with less than perfect graphics, a lot of you become nitpicky about textures and polygons. It makes absolutely no sense....

As long as the gameplay is good, and the story is entertaining, I can forgive the graphics.

      • John

Totally different things, the art direction in Pix n Luv rush was great, the art direction in this game is terrible. Just because the tech isn't the same doesn't mean it looks bad.

It's not "people" who lose out if old tech gets left behind here. Gameloft loses out, because there's a large base of old idevice owners out there and Gameloft will be damned if they lose the money that they could otherwise make from off of those potential customers. Make no mistakes about it. Progress is nice and all, but first and foremost, Gameloft is in the business of making money, and they want that person who owns a first generation iphone or 2g ipod touch to buy their games.

    • kutter

Are we looking at the same pictures? Come on this is a phone dude. The graphics are amazing for such a small portable device. It's difficult enough to put PS3 graphics on your home television, but this is a freekin phone.

Looks great! and it's freemium so nobody has an excuse not to get this. only if you need extra vehicles and weapons will you need to buy them in game.

    • Anonymous

That's odd, gameloft (to my knowledge) doesn't seem to use freemium model. I'll get it no matter what though.. I really hope there's not as much pop-up as there was in its predecessor.

  • lildave213

From watching the video, i assume the game is gonna have grammar issues.
