We just got word from UK-based developer Mr. Fung Fung has been hard at work on the upcoming MiniSquadron Special Edition. We really enjoyed the original MiniSquadron [$2.99 / Free] in our review, and are expecting the same kind of arcade style shooter gameplay in this special edition pseudo-sequel.

MiniSquadron Special Edition is going to sport 8 brand new levels, 50 more planes to unlock, 2 new power-ups ("rapid fire" and "freeze") along with a new fireball weapon to unleash on the new enemy types which can be seen in the following gameplay trailer:

Best of all, MiniSquadron Special Edition will be free to download, and will include a pair of levels to try out. Following that, levels are sold in sets of two for 99¢ a pack. MiniSquadron Special Edition is coming soon, and definitely will be worth downloading if you never played the original just to see what you've been missing.

Oh god! I HATE in app downloads! What about those people that don´t have a connection with their devices?? Damn!

The first is amazingly hard for me. But I absolutely love it.

    Can't wait for this.

So what about the people that already bought the original?

Hi Jeff - you can get the first 2 levels of the new one for free! And then if you want you can get the rest using DLC.

I own the first minisquadron, and it's excellent. But I don't know if I want to buy it again - I'd pay a few bucks for an upgrade to the fully loaded special edition.

    • http://www.minisquadron.com Tak Fung

Yeah - you can do this! Or even better - just grab the next 2 levels for nothing - you can't argue with that kinda deal :D

I agree with Simon. It's got some of the smoothest, most-responsive controls out there.
As for the new stuff, I'm torn. MiniSquadron is one of my favorites, so more is great. But I'm not a fan of DLC. And did everything in the video seem slow to anyone else? Also, the helicopter is a cool idea, but it looks kind of useless. And new maps are all right, but the environments don't matter nearly as much to me as new planes would. Are they paid content too?
Oh well. Blabber, blabber, etc. I'll still probably be getting this. It's MiniSquadron, after all.

The planes are NOT paid content. You only need to pay for levels and then unlock those planes contained within!

Hey everyone! Thanks for the comments! Well for those who are not sure - why not download it and get the first 2 levels for FREE?? The game is going on so you get the first couple of levels without having to pay - and then its up to you to get more levels if you think it's worth it. This way, it's better than charging $2.99 for the entire thing - at least you can try it before you buy it! :)

    • beetle004

good idea.let those who haven't bought it yet play and decide for themselves!

Global multiplayer will be done in the future when I can rewrite the engine and work out how to code up the server stuff. It's going to take a long time as there is a limit to how much I can do by myself physically, and I don't really have funds to employ another coder sadly. Sloooowly :)

It will be an iPad version?

    • http://twitter.com/mrfungfung Tak Fung

There's no real plans for an iPad version, it really doesn't fit the device, and it's not really going to be all that different a game

It sounds fun and I'm looking forward to it. I for one love the concept of the Free with DLC with my only caveat that the DLC stuff should be somewhat self contained (if this makes any sense). When folk offer DLCs that boil down to "buy this pack of power-ups so as to get an advantage in global rankings vs. those who didn't" (ala Parachute Panic's Bonus Lives or EVERYTHING in Eliminate), I take issue. Also I don't like being OVERLY nickel and dimed with having to pay for minute enhancements individually but if each pack offers 2 levels plus a chunk of unlockable aircraft, that should be well worth the price of admission.

I find this so much better than the OLD Lite version model since it leaves out to me the most annoying file management aspect of the old system. Maybe it is just me since I have twice as many apps on my device as I have pages to see them so many of my lites are ONLY accessible via my iTunes Sync function. The old system meant that once I decided I liked the lite and wanted to upgrade to full I had to download a whole new app and couldn't delete the lite version until my next sync. With this "Freemium" model the full game is already there, I just need to pay to access parts of it without any big additional download or file management crapola.

So this is sort of an enhanced re-work of the original, right? If I grab this, beyond nostalgia, there is no point in keeping the original version on my device?

    • http://www.minisquadron.com Tak Fung

Hey dude! Thanks for the comments - I am filled with confidence with your remarks dude - it is *exactly* why I went for the Free and in game level pack buying :D Theres no real point in keeping the original version, until some future time where I try and do some kind of inter-game mechanic (maybe).

GO LORD GEK! BIG UP YOURSELF!

      • http://www.minisquadron.com Tak Fung

Oh maybe you want to keep the old one for some minor updates to bring the game up to speed with the Special Edition in terms of bugs and some small additions (eg the new pickups)

Awesome! I have been waiting for a new MiniSquadron. This looks great! The first one had amazing controls and enough unlockable gameplay to keep me busy for hours. I am liking the new purchasing model and I hope it works out for Mr. Fung.
