Namco held a press event last night where they announced the iPhone version of Pool Pro Online 3. This represents the 3rd in the franchise which originally began on mobile phones but is now extending to smartphones and even the desktop.

While the game may be of interest to those who enjoy pool, it also represents a few first of potentially a series of games using their UniteSDK which allows cross-platform online play. Jonathan Kromrey, general manager of apple games for Namco Networks, writes "This is only the beginning of where we are going as a company. Over the next several months, we will roll out a series of other features and games that are powered by UniteSDK, including tournaments for Pool Pro Online 3."

Pool Pro Online 3 will eventually be also available for PC, Mac, Android, Java, BREW, RIM and Windows Mobile, and will allow instant online play across all the platforms. UniteSDK also includes the usual friend lists, leaderboards and such that we've already seen in OpenFeint and Plus+. Namco is also opening up UniteSDK to 3rd party developers as well.

As for Pool Pro Online 3, it allows both single player and online play in 8-ball, 9-ball and Snooker. Players can also make in-game wagers against their opponents and use winnings to upgrade table felts, cue sticks and new pool halls. The 3d game allows you to rotate your view and pinch/zoom to line up your shot.

The iPhone version of the game will be released on Thursday for $4.99.

    It looks a bit stuttery. Virtual Pool is still one my 'Never Been Deleted' iPhone games, for it's fluid UI and gameplay.

    Bigpoint is a con.
    You need to look into the workings of the game “DarkOrbit”.
    The support team never seem interested in anything we (the paying customers) have to say, they just sweep most of our complaints under the carpet. I have been unable to play the game on 3 occasions because of coding errors and have dropped in rank by what cost me roughly over £100 and hard work to attain. Not once did I receive an apology or any form of compensation. Therefore, I have wasted money on your game. I call it being robbed.
    And the support team constantly accused me of being a cheat that was later proven to be another coding error. They need to keep more of an eye on their support team and inchat mods/admin.
    I was once told by a support member that even if I attempt to go higher with this that any email will only end up back with them, that’s how obnoxious they can be. “Fine, any communication in english gets back to the english supporters anyway,
    nevermind where you sent it”
    The chat admin/mods need to be vetted more closely than they already are, they ban people mostly for no reasonable reason, most of them can’t even string a sentence together and don’t understand the context of most words.
    There are so many complaints that are swept under the carpet by their so-called support team.
    Just as they are posting their advertisements on the net, I too am posting my complaints on the net. I believe it to be my duty in protecting the unsuspecting public against the treatment received from employees of bigpoint.
    Every rip-off, scam-site on the net is going to hear about the following. I am sick and tired of them using a bug as an excuse.
    “This site has a gold premium package that costs £35 for 12 months use, they are giving people 9 months use in the hope that people won't notice seeing as it continues to the next year if not cancelled. I unexpectedly cancelled mine which they didn't notice, and a month later my premium ended after only 9 months. When I noticed this, they deleted my account after I have spent hundreds of pounds on their site. They didn't like the fact that I discovered their scam and have covered their tracks.”
    DarkOrbit is running one big scam and their coders are useless, maybe they at bigpoint did or didn’t know about this but, I suggested they look into this. Although, I know it will all be denied.
