XS Games, a New York based publisher, announced Friday that they plan to release an iPhone and PSPgo port of “The Red Star” early this spring. The Red Star was a popular shooter/action game for the Playstation 2 that was based off the graphic novel of the same name.

The game was a blend of top down shooting and side scrolling beat ’em levels. It also had some RPG elements, with characters being able to upgraded abilities at the end of levels.

Here is a trailer for the PS2 version:

XS Games says that both the PSPgo and iPhone are the perfect new home for the game. They say by releasing the game on these platforms it will allow them to improve the game play and graphics of the game while keeping the price fair. We will have to wait till spring to see if they deliver.

Was alright, nothing special when compared to the huge list of ps2 games. Still not bad for iphone though!

I think they'll find if they release it only on pspgo (and not UMD) then they'd be lucky to sell 4 of them. But the my iTouch is eager to be playing this game. looks epic.

Even if it's non-UMD, it's still playable on ALL PSP units, from the original to the 3000 revision, NOT just the Go. They ALL can play games downloaded from PSN. The real issue with PSN is the pricing.

This is very solid on Xbox (and PS2) but, uh, yeah, without massive changes, this is not anything like the perfect game for a portable platform unless they slow it way, way, way down. (And then it wouldn't really be the same game anymore.)

I enjoyed this game, though I don't recall what platform I owned it on. I want to say it was a modded xbox but I thought the game had only been released in Europe and was canceled in the US? Great game either way.

From what I recall, it didn't take very long to beat, maybe a few hours.

Would be great if they could fully integrate cooperative mode thru local wifi for two players. I would buy it in a heartbeat. I enjoyed playing Alive 4-ever with my friend. The graphics for The Red Star are of course definitely way better. There should be more of these games in the App Store. Note to the developers: please make it run on 1st gen iPods.

Looking forward to this game finally getting a release. It fell into limbo when Acclaim went all pear-shaped, then it popped up in VERY LIMITED release on the PS2, but I wanted it on XBox (better framerate, less jaggy), but alas... they never released it. It would've been PERFECT for XBLA, but iPhone will do.

No way the graphics are going to be better (which the developer states) on the iPhone, I simply cannot believe that, but I'd like to be proven wrong though!
