Following on the heels of I Dig It Expeditions [App Store], InMotion Software gave us a look at their upcoming dual-stick top-down dungeon crawler, Catacombs. They take the familiar controls of the numerous dual-stick games, but instead of simply asking you to slay a never-ending supply of enemies, you have to make your way through the maze-like corridors of whatever evil dungeon your character found themselves in.

Along the way you will come across locked doors that must be unlocked with keys hidden inside the dungeon, as well as tons of gold and treasure. To assist you on your quest, the monsters of the dungeon randomly drop power-ups that do things like increase your movement speed, or offer different offensive bonuses.

Three classes are included: The warrior, mage, and archer. Each class plays a little differently and have their own basic attacks and special abilities. The following gameplay video shows each of the three classes going through a part of the first level of the dungeon:

Catacombs has already been submitted to Apple, and hopefully will be released sometime soon. If you like dungeon crawlers, and you like dual-stick shooters, you're going to love Catacombs.

"I have never seen such bravery!"

I guess this is what the devs of The Relic get for annoucing to the world what they are doing And then pushing their project back.

No mention, of "Gauntlet" in this preview?

    I mean....it's kinda....similar, don't you think?

I agree about the "Gauntlet" look to things... Not that I mind, but it does seem a little obvious. I kept waiting for "Warrior Needs Food... Badly!" to be voiced. But the game does look fun

ah... from the makers of i dig it... and the abandoned tower defense game dungeon defense which i bought with a promise of updates... i guess no thanks are the right words for this game....

    • Symbolist

The iDig It apps are part of the stores crown jewels! Not having played them is having missed a whole lot of fun! InMotion is offering premium quality.
(That TD was a case of fun for a few hours; compared to the stuff other developers offer... it was just average (with above the average eye candy and polish) - nothing more or less.)

      • MrMuesli

I don't fully agree. Of all the TD's I bought, I found that DD was the one that had the most potential. But sadly, it was abandoned. Understandable I guess if the devs felt that I Dig It was doing so well that they had to make a sequel, but I too can't help feeling a bit sad for DD.

Graphically it looks good, but the audio seems pretty wimpy (except the music). Gameplay between the three classes also seems very similar - just doesn't look like there's much variety. Still...something to keep an eye on...

AH HA! It is a modern-day clone of Gauntlet, my beloved 1980s arcade game, not those crappy 3-D remakes that were made. I had figured as much after seeing the developer posted info in the forums yesterday... Looking pretty smooth, I'll be picking it up!

Love the graphical smoothness. I'd have to try a lite version before picking it up, but it looks really good from this vid.

      Lite version? Its .99c.

Yeah, I'm surprised no Gauntlet mention in the preview, 'cos it's unbelievably obvious, even different classes. I'm quite happy about that though, the original and its first sequel were classics. (The rest in the series were all complete rubbish though.) GRaphically this looks quite sweet. Sound is a bit pale, I agree. Still, I think this will give survival shooters the much needed exploration and dungeon elements that I've felt they all needed.

I don't agree with everything in this blog post, but you do make some very good points. Im very interested in this topic and I myself do alot of research as well. Either way it was a well thoughtout and nice read so I figured I would leave you a comment. Feel free to check out my website sometime and let me know what you think.
