IMG_0016As the title may hint, Future Racer is a futuristic racing game with similar gameplay elements to Wipeout and all the other anti-gravity racers on the App Store-- A genre which has collected quite a few releases lately. Featuring six tracks which take place in various locales such as cities, sewers, and forests as well as six ships which are unlocked through the game, each with their own set of strengths and weaknesses.

Future Racer uses standard tilt controls to steer your ship, along with a button for both acceleration and braking. Where Future Racer seems to falls short is in the power-up system. The developers have mentioned that the lack of weaponry and other power-ups is because the game focuses "purely on speed and skill", but those weapons were what I like most about these types of games. Instead of missiles and other combat options, the only things there are to pick up are speed boosts and power-ups which reduce your finishing time by a few seconds.

Here's our hands on video of the game:

With recent competition from both Low Grav Racer 2 [$2.99] and Speed Forge Extreme [$2.99] it's going to be harder to stand out from the pack. Future Racer will be launching at an introductory price of $0.99 when it arrives sometime next week.

or he cant play, or the controlls are shitty,
the game itself looks pretty cool but seen from here the controllers seem to suck...
    hes only hugging the walls...

Eli might *like* weapons games better, but that doesn't mean this one "falls short." There is a whole genre of no-weapon racers, like F-Zero, where the focus is on skill and timing. My favorite of that genre in the app store is the outstanding Ground Effect, which is due for a sweet 3-D update soon as well!

No ONE will EVER make a good Wipeout clone because they don't have the tDR (The Designers Republic) design sensibility. The design of these games (both this one and Low Grav Racer) are just simply horrible. Everyone is trying to re:invent this sort of futuristic feel but they fail at making something appealing.

Gameloft should make a Wipeout clone because we can be sure they would rip everything right - including the re:imagination of tDR design. :)

Er, I guess the article writer has never played F-Zero much before....

Wipeout is just a shadow to the brilliance that is F-Zero. Faster, better handling and takes actual skill and not reliance on randomised weaponry.

Any game furthering itself to be like the originator and best is a-ok in my book.

Hahaha is this a beta? That draw distance is funny!
    Seriously, though.

Ok I have low grav, the racing game from handango and just tried speed forge because it looked interesting and had 3gs enhancements. Low Grav was pretty awesome at the time (handango's was ok) but Speed forge just doesn't hold up to the polish and fun factor to what NFS Asphalt and Real Racing offers. This game actuallly looks worse than speed forge and it's going to hard to compete with the awesome racing games the app store already offers.

I'm going to have to really hold off my purchases now unless it's there's a lite or from a top tier iphone dev but even there's no guarantee on quality :(

It looks odd to see those buildings and pillars drawing themselves in the distance. I don't usually notice those things that much. Usually they just pop up all at once.
