'Mirror's Edge' iPhone Trailer - Looks Great

posted December 7th, 2009 2:21 PM EST by Eli Hodapp in Action, Games, iPhone games, iPod touch games, Upcoming Games

A few days ago EA surprised us with some screenshots of the upcoming iPhone action adventure game Mirror's Edge. The PC and console versions of the game are absolutely chock full of long jumps, crazy acrobatics, and hand to hand combat. From the looks of this trailer, the iPhone version is going do a good job of providing a similar feel-- Although not from a first person perspective.

EA Mobile posted the video to their main site, but we've embedded here for your convenience.

For the sake of comparison, here is the original trailer for the "full" version of the game available for home consoles and the PC. It's interesting that many of the scenes are identical between the trailers but from a different perspective:

What little else we know about the iPhone version of Mirror's Edge was posted in our preview article. The game is expected for release in January 2010.

Needless to say, we will be following Mirror's Edge very closely.

Shouldn't this game be called: "Mirror's Edgy"?

No...that guy would be a fool to sue EA! It wouldn't end well lol

So he just picks on small companies...

    • Jason

Good one. But anyway, this looks cool- like drugged- up Canabalt! Too bad it'll probably be like 7 bucks

Whoa! I just started playing the game again on my pc. This version looks great. I hope it's fun to play. And I can't wait for a sequel to Mirrors Edge! Really it's a great game that everyone should play. You can get a hard copy for like 20 bucks and I think someone said it was $4.99 on steam... Such an awesome game.

    • kita

That was a one day sale.

If this game was of a randomly created level/unlimited run style of Canabalt style I would be great for $5 or less. If it was story driven with a limited # of levels? Pass. I want replayability. No need for a story beyond "Run as far as you can.

    • SalsaMD

re-playability is fine, but quality/intensity of gameplay is also important.

      • Dan

You don't have to have a story to have quality/intense gameplay. This is not a PC or console game where you are to play for 50+ hours in long sitting sessions. To me a great iphone game is something you can sit with between office meetings or on a short train ride. Enjoy it and get out.

IMHO - based on the game snippets in the trailer - I would very much enjoy a unlimited run game based on that action. Even if no story.

How about they put a story on it and you just ignore it?

    • Josh

I really don't feel comparing this to Canabalt works at all. Canabalt (which is great, don't get me wrong) is based on a single button press, and strategy of when to slow yourself down. This doesn't look like it plays like that. While it will obviously be timing based (aren't most games?) I don't think it really 'mirrors' (heh) Canabalt in any way other than the 'setting' for the game being free-running.

That being said, its unclear how it plays exactly, but I don't imagine its similar at all to Canabalt in controls... The original Mirror's Edge really was nothing of the sort.

I mean, maybe this would be like comparing Halo to a light gun arcade game. They both are based around similar mechanics, and the 'rush' of the game is the same... both shooters, both get adrenaline going on a big spree... Canabalt and this both look like they are free-running games, and fast runs with crazy results getting blood rushing... But I really don't think they need to be said in the same sentence.

    • munkee

yeah you will, but I won't. I prefer a story-driven game with real objectives and content rather than aimless minigames. We have too many of those already.

I would also like it if it has a Canabalt mechanic of endless, randomized fun. Looks gorgeous though. May have to get it when it goes on sale. :)

I owned the 360 version and while it was fun I prefer the 2D flash version that was made. If this is anything like the 2D version i'm all for it day 1.

The screenshots looked a bit iffy to me, but it looks great in action. I just hope fighting enemies is kept to a minimum, or is better integrated into the parkour platforming than it was in the console/PC version.

Also, is it just me or are the birds really huge in the trailer?

I'm really excited about this game. I'm really hoping for Tap-Fu style gesture-based controls. If it gives us the option to play that way it's an instant sale for me. If it has a little onscreen d-pad then I'll probably avoid it.
