Roundup: Voltron, Harry Potter: Spells, Aqua Forest 2, Connect 4
posted by arn on November 30th, 2009 1:39 AM EST in Reviews, iPhone games, iPod touch gamesHere are a few high profile titles that we don't necessarily recommend to everyone, but if you're a big fan of any of the franchises, they may be worth considering.
Voltron
"From days of long ago, from uncharted regions of the universe, comes a legend. The legend of Voltron: Defender of the Universe. A mighty robot loved by good, feared by evil. "
If that intro sent chills down your spine, and you wouldn't think twice about paying $4 to experience it again, this is the game for you. Voltron delivers a mediocre mobile game wrapped in between audio and video clips of the Voltron cartoon. The game is presented in an isometric view and played with a virtual d-pad. It feels very much like a mobile phone port. While some hard-core fans seem to be enjoying it, it's certainly not a general recommendation.

Harry Potter: Spells
Harry Potter: Spells is a game of magical combat in which you hold your iPhone out like a wand and draw magical shapes in the air to activate spells. You learn 13 spells in practice mode which you’ll be able to bring to the wizardry duelling that forms the core of the game's offering. You’ll have the opportunity to practice against AI opponents of varying skill or take your experience to a real world duel with friends via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Potter fans will be delighted by the accurate presentation here, but it can be hard to get the hang of it and there's really not a whole lot of game to it.

Aqua Forest 2
Aqua Forest 2 looks nice and continues to do some interesting things with water droplet physics, but the game remains rough around the edges and has an annoying tilt-calibration between every single level.

Connect 4
Milton Bradley's Connect 4 for the iPhone. There's not much more to say here. The game comes with Classic as well as Challenge, and Advanced Modes. This video (not shot by us) shows the gameplay as well as animations. Multi-player modes allow you to play with a friend on local Wi-Fi/Bluetooth or Pass 'n Play.

Super polished and fun
Buy it !
Good to know you loved it. Wait you forgot to mention which one :p
Aqua Forest 2 looks kind of cool…
Yes it does! It doesn’t look like it’s that much related to the original, except in theme (water, heat), but maybe in some levels it’s more like the old one (which I did enjoy). The new one looks more like a ball roller only with really good water physics instead of a ball—and that’s enough to interest me.
Connect 4 is easily worth only $.99!
Totally agree, maybe should even be free, it's pretty easy to find a free knock off of this game.
Harry Potter Spells looks cool. But a little steep for 3 dollars. I've got Magic Wand for 99c, it's good. Maybe I'll try this if the price goes lower.
Link 4 is free and works just fine, I wish all these big companies would stop trying to get premium pricing for "one trick pony" type games.
Really? No online multiplayer? I'll pass and stick with Link4.
I would gladly pay for this IF they added online multiplayer.
