photo 4In what must have been an App Store approval quirk, Illusion Labs has released updates to both Labyrinth and Labyrinth Lite which offers customers an early peek at the gameplay from Labyrinth 2.

The 1.7.0 version update includes the following features:

  • Improved performance
  • User interface improvements
  • Improved in-game graphics
  • Sound system improvements
  • Stability improvements
  • 5 Labyrinth 2 levels

Yep, play some of the new levels, complete with the new additional obstacles from within the original version. Labyrinth 2 has not yet appeared in the App Store, though we assume that it will appear at any moment. In the meanwhile, give the new levels a spin -- though they do feel a bit out of place in the old versions of the game, and you miss out on the more gradual introduction of elements that is found in Labyrinth 2.

I loved the 5 levels from Labyrinth 2! I laughed multiple times as I played them. Very fun.

LOL, thought the 3D video intro was actual gameplay:(, a 3D labyrinth version using panning like Wild West pinball would be fantastic.

Yes it's a quirk, we didn't plan on releasing this before the actual game, but we hope people like quirks :)

    Absolutely love the new elements.
Still don't like, than you can blow up a metal ball into dust. And please tell me, it is possible to toggle off the 3D effect? As I said, your game was the most realistic one to me and I think this effect with all it's shaking stuff is not clean enough to me. But I can't wait to get the full version, much more challenging.

    • http://illusionlabs.com Anders

      Thanks for your feedback!

Any suggestions on how to improve "the explosions"? So far the consensus seems to be "awww I love the cute little puffy clouds" :) It's always hard to please everyone, but we hope we can please the most.

It will not be possible to turn off 3D in version 1.0.0, no. Internally we have a setting that changes just that, so it would be pretty easy to add if people want it. I'm a bit surprised that you want to turn it off though. It could be because you are used to the 2D mode in L1. I personally much prefer the 3D over 2D though.

Oh and there are some very challenging levels for sure :)

      • http://illusionlabs.com Anders

        Just one little question.

You still want it to be in 3D, you just don't want the perspective to change when you tilt the device, right? That makes sense to me, some people said they were seasick when we demoed the Android version of L1.

      • http://www.yourpersonalrobot.com your personal robot

Yeah, I guess it's very personal and even if you doesn't change anything I would love to buy the game. As I said, I loved the pure realism in the original Labyrinth, then the competition came up with more eye candy and you had to adapt. But so it's way more "just another game" then a near real simulation. Both sides have got their advantages. And I'm sure more kids are buying apps in the store than grown ups. Without this I-see-the-pixels-moving-3D, it would be more timesless - to me. And yes, the explosions are cute :) don't fit to the ball, but fitting to the new overall atmosphere. So, go for it. As you said, you can't please everyone :)

      • Cranker

        I would also like a 2D option :)

      • http://illusionlabs.com Anders

Ok, thanks for clarifying. We talked about it and we will most likely add (just for you!) it in an update, perhaps even the first update which are planning on submitting the same day the game is out.

L2 even comes with some classic levels too, if you are a Labyrinth purist :P

      • Cranker

Yes, I think that's it for me too. 3D without the perspective change. I think :)

      • http://www.yourpersonalrobot.com your personal robot

I wasn't a fan of the first one because I didn't like the boards and it lacked level progression but I love Labyrinth 2 levels. The levels are really creative with more variables and the puzzles almost remind me of the ones the Zelda series kind of offers. This is a definite buy for me.

I think I found a glitch. One the first level you can shrink. Shrink the ball, and when you fall in a hole and spawn back, you spawn as a small ball instead of a normal one. Is this a bug?

    • http://illusionlabs.com Anders

It's actually a feature! It is used in some of the puzzle levels in the full version.

I gotta say, I am absolutely BLOWN AWAY by how much better labyrinth 2 is. I expected there to be some frame rate drops with all the stuff going on in the maps and 3D effect of the board, but it ran just as smoothly as labyrinth 1! Definitely, definitely going to buy labyrinth 2. Also, the new puzzle-ey elements to the game are just amazing. They are going to increase the lifespan of the game for sure.
Just one question though, are there still going to be some levels with the traditional, only a game board and no extra things, format? I absolutely love the new stuff that's getting put in, but I can also imagine myself wanting to go back to the old, pure labyrinth once in a while.

    • http://www.illusionlabs.com Anders

Thanks! We have worked very very hard to achieve 60 fps on all devices (on most levels) and still have great graphical effects like ball reflections etc.

Yes, there are a few level packs shipped with the game that only contain walls and holes, we refer to them as "classic" level packs, for instance "The lost classics". There will be many more of those available for download.

Well, err, a majority of demos are vertical slices so that's slightly less of a unique issue as it seems.

I noticed the rating system. Will there be a "Top Rated" section in the download tab? Because although having 1000+ levels is nice, you can never tell which are high quality, and which are decent.

    • http://www.illusionlabs.com Anders

Sigh, got another "Your comment is awaiting moderation" :/

But yes, in short, there are lists for most downloaded, highest rated, what's hot, newcomers etc. You also have previews of the levels so you can look at them before downloading.

Think of it as the App Store itself, just that everything is free. There are different top lists, such as most download, highest rated, what's hot (i.e. trending level packs) and also lists of new fresh unrated level packs and random lists if you are feeling brave. If you find a level pack you like, you can simply find all packs by the same author.

You will also have access to previews of the level packs, which could be handy if you want to flick through to see what the levels look like before downloading it.

You can download level packs with just one click, which is neat if you want to download many at once, for instance before going on a journey. You can of course start the game directly from within the download menu, no need to jump back and forth between menus.

Creating levels a whole other story, but I'll just touch on that briefly. They way it is designed, the level creator must play through her own levels before she can publish them.

The reason for this is that a) this ensures that all levels are possible to complete, and b) that the creator sets a par time (we have awards, and one of them is to beat the par time a certain amount of times). After she completes her levels, she can rate how hard she think it is. The difficulty is however adjusted by all the ones who download and play it -- after you complete a level pack, you get to rate it easy/medium/hard, and also 1-5 stars.

    Cheers,
    Anders

Damn, I am soo impressed by how much of an improvement labyrinth 2 is going to be over labyrinth 1. Seriously guys, you have waayy outdone yourself this time xD. I bought the original labyrinth at the original price ($7 or something?) and I'll gladly buy this version for that much as well.

WOW! this looks amazing! I really can't wait for this. I still play labyrinth because there are so many levels. Anyways everything sounds great but i was playing the new Labyrinth 2 levels added to labyrinth and i can't stand the new menu and how its like slanted horrizontally. I don't like it and it makes me think that i should be holding my ipod touch horizontally and its hard to read at times but i love all the new aspects that are being added

    • http://illusionlabs.com Anders

I know, we wrestled quite a bit with the menus. Some want to play in landscape mode, and some want to play in portrait mode. The best solution we could come up with was something in-between to try to please all. It's a matter of personal preference really.

Due to the location of the accelerometer, you should get better precision if you hold it horizontally. Easy to medium levels I play in portrait mode, but I always have to switch to landscape mode for the hard levels.

Another reason for the slanted lines is that we are going for a worn down retro sports inspired look, to resemble the time period of the original game.
