c64 shop screen

Manomio, makers of the C64 for iPhone emulator [App Store], have announced that a free v1.2 update is in the works which will activate the in-app purchase game shop, offering games ranging from free to $1.99 in price.  Some had complained that the emulator's bundled games didn't represent any of their true, old time favorites.  I'm quite sure this update will be of great interest to those who wanted more.

Initial game shop offerings:

Manomio's initial game shop offerings make up an extremely impressive list of C64 classics.  Retro fans, and even the merely curious iPhone gamers, are in for a real treat when this update goes live in mid-December.  And the offering of the superb Bruce Lee for free should be quite a Christmas present!

    This app is a wonderful idea. I only wish that there was an option for swapping the controls and that the game instructions were accessible off-line. Two things to cater for the minority I know, but there must be a significant amount of left-handers out there not near wifi to make it important enough, no? : )

    • Alternate control configuration is absolutely a priority for us, and we will support LH and RH orientation – we just felt that more games we're the highest priority for 1.2.

      We'll look at supporting caching / downloading of the game instructions too, so that you can read them off line.

      • MrMuesli says:

        Thanks alot! Great to hear that. Of course, the games themselves should be top priority: ) Browsing some of these C64 game compilation videos on YouTube has brought floods of memories back. So looking forward to reliving a few of the greats.

    • TKO says:

      I believe the devs said they already plan adding a control-swap option, but they want to get the in-app purchases sorted first. Tweaks to the emulator itself should come out in the update after these games.

    • Tekl says:

      Aggree. I also would like to see alternative concepts. For labyrinth style games it would be nice to have labyrinth style control. Just swipe the finger to the left and stay on the screen to walk left. Then swipe up to walk up and so on. A second finger will press fire. So we don’t need to look where the origin of the joystick is.

  • Galley says:

    If only we had MAME and a way to legally download classic arcade games.

  • peter says:

    Gianna Sisters and Jumpman and I'm sold :)

  • differenz says:

    Turrican!! :)

  • WK says:

    MULE or nothing.

  • Dark NRG says:

    +1 for M.U.L.E.
    Man, I had so many pirated games, i don't even know what the boxes look like….

    • DotComCTO says:

      +1 for M.U.L.E.

      Too bad we'll never see it. Let's keep in mind that M.U.L.E. was published by EA (though developed by Ozark/Dan/Dani Bunten). What's the probability that EA – an active iPhone developer – will let M.U.L.E. be added to a C64 emulator running on the iPhone?

      • bruce says:

        I'm running MULE on the first version of the c64 emulator.. too good!

      • TKO says:

        Remember, for a lot of these very old titles, the copyright might have reverted back to the original author. So EA might not have a say in it at all. (Depends very much on conditions the particular title was developed under ..for example, I believe most Infocom adventures are still controlled by whoever owns the Infocom copyrights now, but The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy isn't one of them.)

        Besides all that, there might be someone in EA who's perfectly willing to earn the company a little profit off some of its old titles (MULE, Racing Destruction, Chuck Yeager's AFT, etc.) when it's really not costing them anything in development time.

        They might even consider it good advertising for a remake they plan to release on iTouch devices.

      • Dark NRG says:

        well, we do have Archon, same system, same era. Heres hopin, bc EA had some other early gems, like WORMS (not what you all know as worms today, trust me). and didn't they do Adventure Construction Set??? Epic. Period.

  • JazzFlight says:

    MrMuesli, "swapping" the controls so that the D-Pad is on the left side isn't even a "leftie" control scheme. In fact, it's what the overwhelming majority of video games use. I don't know what went through the designers' heads when they thought "right thumb = movement."

  • Twitchfactor says:

    Jumpman and Bruce Lee are two of the best games ever made!

  • Ender says:

    My dream game list for this emulator: Impossible Mission, Defender of the Crown, Wasteland, Last Ninja 1 and 2, Summer / Winter games, Moon Patrol, Forbidden Forest, Zorro, Pool of Radiance, Seven Cities of Gold, California Games, Skate or Die, Pitstop II, International Karate, Wizard of Wor, Spy vs Spy, Grand Prix Circuit, Beach Head I and II, Raid Over Moscow, Aliens, Saxon.

    Wow, that's a longer list than I thought. (I loved my C64 back in the day.)

    Really glad they'll have Paradroid; that was one of my favorites.

    • SDG07 says:

      Great list

      I'm gonna put my top 3's at M.U.L.E, Skate or Die and California Games

      bring those to the table and everyone born in the 70's 80's and maybe early 90's will get this emulator!

    • TKO says:

      Funny because, in the e-mail *I* got from Manomio, Impossible Mission was listed instead of Storm Lord ..so that one might just make it in there. If it does, then that does hold some hope for others in the Epyx collection maybe ..they had some iconic titles.

  • jindofox says:

    I'd like to see everything that was on the plug-n-play c64 joystick a few years back, and would be willing to pay a little more to get them. Here's the list, straight from Wikipedia.

    EPYX
    * Summer Games
    * Winter Games
    * Pitstop
    * Pitstop II
    * Super Cycle
    * Jumpman Jr.
    * Impossible Mission
    * Impossible Mission II
    * Championship Wrestling
    * Gateway to Apshai
    * Sword of Fargoal
    * Silicon Warrior
    * World Karate Champion (AKA International Karate)
    * Several events taken from Epyx's World Games and California Games, including Bull Riding, Sumo Wrestling, Flying Disks

    Hewson
    * Tower Toppler (AKA Nebulus)
    * Paradroid
    * Eliminator
    * Cyberdyne Warrior
    * Cybernoid I
    * Cybernoid II
    * Ranarama
    * Firelord
    * Exolon
    * Uridium
    * Zynaps

    Image Works
    * Speedball

    BTW there's a nice tilt-control port of Paradroid on the app store for $2 called "Androidz." http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/androidz/id306554105?mt=8

  • Gregz0r says:

    @manomio Mastertronic! Now that's a name from the past! Any Ocean/Imagine games in the pipeline?

  • Gregz0r says:

    This is really an awesome app. I love the polish in the presentation, giving you that real old-school feel.

    Note to SEGA: 'This' is how you do retro on the iPhone.

    • spiffyone says:

      As a Sega fan, I've all but given up on them as far as making sound decisions is concerned. This is, in fact, how retro should be done, in a form of a compilation app where one could, within the app, download further games as DLC. Basically the video game equivalent of something like Stanza or the other e-book readers. Rather than package each classic game individually at $5 a pop as Sega has done, why not sell an emulator (hopefully optimized) with a few of classic games, and sell that for, say $10, and then have the in app DLC for future games?

      Why?

      Because it's Sega, and the plan makes sense, and therefore it will never be implemented.

  • 1337brian says:

    Now this is a great example of what good DLC is…

  • Rufus says:

    Hunter's Moon please! And Wizball would be ace …

  • Harmaceutical says:

    Another vote for M.U.L.E.!

    Although, Paradroid was the first game I thought of when I first heard the word C64, so I'm stoked that it's coming!

    Also, Ultima IV and V!

  • Jake says:

    After spending years playing modern console gaming, not to mention WASD/mouse on the computer side, I want the joystick/movement controls on the left thumb, and the button on the right. Also, tightening the circumference of the joystick circle would be great. I feel like I'm covering a quarter of the screen to do actions which feel like they should just require me to roll my thumb around a little bit. I love havig C64 stuff legally available on my phone, but the input is incredibly frustrating. (Same goes for their port of Flashback, which is otherwise enjoyable.)

  • Mindfield says:

    I'd love M.U.L.E. as well, but that's a very good start to DLC — and the Bruce Lee freebie is awesome. I LOVED that game.

  • Matt says:

    Wow so pleased about this.

    Bruce Lee is gonna be awesome, but I had TOTALLY forgotten about Uridium, and I used to love that when I was like 13 or whatever, so that should be great fun to relive!

  • Joshua Ochs says:

    It doesn't run my software, so I don't care. Honestly, no matter how much stuff they put on there, it will never complete anyone's wishlist, as everyone has an obscure game or two that won't be there. Or they simply won't be able to get the licensing for it, as pretty much all of those companies are dead and gone many times over through acquisitions and closing shop.

    In a nutshell – can I run Below the Root on it (a game that I purchased and still have disk images of)? No? Then I really couldn't care less.

    • It would seem that despite such an effort never being able to complete most people's ultimate wishlist, it might still be worthwhile. No?

    • Brazil says:

      You surely understand how few people out there still have original c64 games they purchased 20 years ago, much less have the equipment and knowledge to turn them into disk images that modern PCs can read?

      I'm sure there's a few of you but you're about as marginal as a marginal group can be. And Apple would never allow it anyway, so there's really no point of even discussing it. The dev never even had the option to do something like this.

  • araczynski says:

    dunno, guess i'm not willing to pay for nostalgia what the rest of you are.

  • djflippy says:

    /me wants

    M.U.L.E.
    Wasteland
    The Last V8
    Telengard
    Summer Games
    Impossible Mission
    Ultima
    Spy vs. Spy

  • Brian says:

    I think they'd do a lot better if the app itself was free, and only charged for the games. They'd get it in a lot more hands that way.

    • peter says:

      I agree. The app should be free with the money being made on the games purchased.

      Another vote for M.U.L.E. :) and Temple of Apshai ! Jumpman !

      I am not sure if there is much hope for Gianna Sisters…………

      • TKO says:

        Yeah .. now that they've (largely) dealt with Apple, I'm sure they don't want to have to start dealing with Nintendo. (Giana Sisters was kept off the market because it was *very* similar to Super Mario Bros.)

  • nsolo1717 says:

    i would love to replay the breakdancing game " Break Street " but i know that day will never come to the iphone =/

  • Max says:

    We don't need a commercial c64-emulator who makes us pay for old games!

    Paying for c64-games???

    Why isnt there an emulation on cydia :(
    So we will never be able to play our real favourites :(

    • TKO says:

      If they have really secured deals with the copyright holders of these games I'm more than happy to pay for them. I know Andrew Braybrook never got anything from me when I was a kid for Paradroid/Uridium/etc. If some of it will go to him now, that will be awesome.

  • InRetroWeRipoff says:

    It is free. This iPhone app is a very basic port of Frodo – The free portable C64 emulator. It's open source and you can download it from here. http://frodo.cebix.net/

    By the way, where is the source code to this C64 app. Frodo is GPL which means you must release the source code when you sell it. (Since you didnt actually do any work except for add some pretty gfx on top)

  • Dark NRG says:

    Pitfall, anyone???

  • Menneisyys says:

    DnP has managed to activate the keyboard :)

  • Justin says:

    Ha! Druid!! I asked for it and I got it!! Day-One-Buy right there. :) One of the best soundtracks EVER.

    Now I just need Legacy of the Ancients, the Bard's Tale games, and a few Ultimas and I will be golden for quite some time!
