Today seems to be Gameloft-day here at TouchArcade with Modern Combat's release, an impressive gameplay video for their Dungeon Hunter RPG, and now a cinematic trailer for their upcoming "fighting game".

The game appears to be Soul Calibur inspired. Here are some screenshots from MyApple.pl:

The first and third screenshots are the same…

  • Kita says:

    Hero of Sparta=God of War
    Guitar Rock=Rock band
    Gangstar= GTA
    Dungeon Hunter= Diablo
    Modern Combat= Modern Warfare
    This= Soul Calibur :)

    • QuebecRage says:

So ? These are all good games and I really don't mind if they can recreate a similar experience on the iPhone. Gameloft is really pushing the graphical and gameplay of their games. Modern Combat and Gangstar were PSP quality games but at 6.99$ (Canadian).

I am really impressed by the "gaming" side of the iPhone. I use it everyday (for my work and personnal use) so games we're not my main motivation for having a 3GS but when I saw the quality (and price) of the games I was really impressed. Don't forget the iPhone is a phone so when you compare these titles to ANY other mobile games on the market you got to be impress.

    • You could put another equal sign after each one of those if you wanted to.

      Dungeon Hunter= Diablo= Rogue
      etc.

Also, none of those genres were offered on this platform, so… why wait?

      Just sayin'.

      • Str1f3 says:

They may be copycats but the main innovation they have brought to the iPhone is that they consistently make good controlling games.Innovators like John Carmack with Doom Ressurrection have struggled developing good controls for iPhone games.

      • Olympus God says:

The iphone is actually a way more powerful piece of hardware then the psp or DS. Games for the iPhone just keep getting better and better.

    • Dante says:

Hey as long as their games are good, right!

    • joni says:

      gameloft = the f**** best

    • 2kitties1cup says:

Gameloft should change thier name to GameCopy or GameLift

everyone of their games is a cheap knockoff made in china

  • spiffyone says:

This could either be a revelation as far as broadening this platform's game library into genres we thought not really possible, or it could be absolute disaster. It all depends on the controls.

  • DannyV says:

Nice! A Soul Calibur clone. Don't mind it at all. Until the original developers of these games decide to do it on the iPhone, just keep them coming Gameloft.

  • spiffyone says:

The Spartan from Hero of Sparta and/or Altaïr from Assassin's Creed (if sister company UbiSoft allows) as hidden characters would be cool.

  • Ayden says:

I want Gameloft to make my babies.

  • Capone says:

I so don't know why Gameloft doesn't support online multiplayer in their games.
Shrek Kart e.g. would rule with the option to play others around the globe. :-(

  • RNF says:

I think I better buy stock in Gameloft!

  • cookiemonster says:

looks like soul caliber…i hate soul caliber

  • ElliotXtreme says:

Looks pretty, my main concern is the control method. Other than Firemint's Real Racing as having the best control compromise for a driving game, what will Blades of Fury offer for a fighting game?

All the pretty graphics and fancy 3D will soon fall by the wayside if the control is rubbish.

    • Victor says:

I beg to differ. I find a simple left/right slider works the best. You can check it out in Gangstar. It would work fantastic for a racing game if it was a little more refined and sensitive.

  • DannyV says:

Anyone else notice how there aren't any buttons on the side? I'm thinking gesture controls for this one! That would be quite cool.

  • Vende says:

    Wow. I'm buying for sure

  • Nausicaa says:

Real tired of 'virtual joystick' controls in gameloft games. It's less than ideal and they use it for everything, regardless of genre. I know they're not big on creativity and originality over there, but this is getting ridiculous. Hopefully this game at least has swipe controls for attacks and not a bunch of fake buttons.

    Arthur? Magnus? Skurd? Ugh.

  • Totalsam says:

    JEEBUS Gameloft…

Thank G for multiplayer. It's aboot time.

TA, you're turning into a giant ad for Gameloft : )

  • Moroboshi says:

Blimey Gameloft really have no shame whatsover. They are the iPhone equivalent of those Chinese handbag/watch/etc clones you see all over the markets in Hong Kong. Yes it may look a bit like a Rolex, but it's actually a load of junk.

If I want Soul Calibur on the go, I'll buy Soul Calibur for PSP, which looks 1000% times better than this.

    • spiffyone says:

Yes, because every iPhone/touch owner owns a PSP as well, right? >_>

Gameloft haters don't really think things through, IEO.

      • Moroboshi says:

Firstly, can this ridiculous 'hater' meme please go away now. It's nonsensical and childish. How old are you? Less than 12 I assume?

Secondly, I imagine many gamers own PSPs as tens of millions of units have been sold. It's not much of a stretch to assume that many iPhone gamers (people who have an interest in mobile gaming) also therefore have PSPs and/or DSs.

My gripe with Gameloft is their business model is entirely parasitic. They simply steal an idea and art style from an existing franchise, pay the original creator's absolutely nothing, and then profit from the theft. Just because they go to the trouble of wrapping a mediocre 'new' game around the theft doesn't diminish how grubby the whole affair is. It's incredibly easy to create original concepts and art styles, Gameloft just choose not to do it because it takes a little more effort and carries more risk.

Their presence on the iPhone shows the immaturity of the iPhone as a gaming platform, although there are some signs of maturity now with excellent efforts such as Infinity Gene. (a game from the original creators of Space Invaders – Taito, and one which is not simply a ripp off/clone of a previous title) That is how I'd like to see the iPhone develop, and not through Gameloft's seemingly endless line of cheap knock off clone titles.

      • Comercial9 says:

Everything Moroboshi said is pretty much why I do love Gameloft. They take ideas from great games, and then bring them to a platform that lacks the true professional originals. (Not saying Gameloft isn't professional) Sure they don't look as good, but you're comparing a mobile phone game to a console game that cost ten times as much. I will say Infinity Gene is one of my favorite games on the iPhone so far. Can't wait to add this to my Gameloft collection.

      • WiseWeasel says:

@Moroboshi: Stop being such a hater. No one buys PSPs anymore, it's all about iPhone nowadays. You're living in the past! : P

      • spiffyone says:

I'm in my 20s, if you must know.

        And haters hate too much.

        Hater. ;)

      • spiffyone says:

And, btw, BRAVO on the reading comprehension.

I love how my sarcastic statement alluding to the fact that not all (hence, "every") iPhone/touch owners own a PSP (or DS) and thereby questioning the validity of your "point" is responded to by you pointing out the idea that "many" perhaps do.

Again, BRAVO. And way to make my point from the initial post as well! :)

    • SalsaMD says:

      Ditto what Spiffy said.

And BTW, Rolex is not a real watch-its a piece of jewelry that holds its market value solely because of demand (cf Patel or Vacheron, which are real watches).

  • Victor says:

You know it baffles me. If big game companies would just contract with Gameloft to make mobile version of their games both would make an absolute killing.

  • Somerandomdude says:

Finally a real fighting game for the iPhone and what better inspiration than Soul Calibur. Now instead of buying the PSP one for 40 bucks I can wait and pay 7 for this one. Gameloft's on a roll lately; Gangstar, Sandstorm, Dungeon Hunter, and now Blades! And knowing GL this'll be out anytime soon.

  • AIM-R8 says:

Very exciting. Can't wait to see how this game plays.

  • Jaxx says:

Gameloft also have the rights to Spider-man Toxic City and Sonic Unleashed, I've played Spider-man on my old symbian powered Nokia N82 and it really was a sweet game (there were 2 versions, a crappy java and a symbian "HD" version), surely they gotta make use of those licences and bring them to the iPhone. They also have the rights to Splinter Cell which would be awesome, I'd be much happier if they turned their efforts and made those games for the iPhone instead. I've already bought like 8 Gameloft games (including Modern Combat, today) in the 2 months since I got my 3GS, they are great developers, not original in anyway but the games are quality.

  • benjamin says:

look folks.1:gameloft makes good games with time intervals.=great sales.2.ey,everybody loves gameloft and theres lot's of news about them.
3.gameloft has brought good games,so let's buy everything they bring out.4.now they are making crap.5.ow,now i'm so dissapointed and hey,i just made gameloft rich.6damn damn damn damn damn damn dan damn,…

  • arta says:

    Gameloft is on FIRE.

  • Michael says:

Hot damn! Great graphics and wi-fi multiplayer? :)

  • imnotpretending says:

    Coming soon from Gameloft:

*additional paychecks to purchase the onslaught of games they release
*extra day off work with which to play them

  • Granny says:

W-O-W! Can't believe my eyes. This is going to be smashing hit – judging by cinematic trailer. However I don't like these fast-paced games, because my fingers are too slow :-(

  • Kiwii says:

    Gameloft! Gameloft! Gameloft!

  • Ethan says:

Is this the same engine as terminator? anyone?

    • ShadowsFall says:

Not even close to the Terminator engine…

Anyways, it would be pretty kickas* to have a game like this on the go! Soul Caliber clone, GTA clone, RPG, COD4 clone, etc. right in your iphone :D

  • MaroonFree says:

Gameloft is just spitting out a bunch off knock offs and cranking in the money. Why? No one is putting out any quality and original games.
No GTA, No Call of Duty, No Hot Shots, No 300, No BIA?
    Gameloft to the rescue.

    • spiffyone says:

Um…Gameloft put out a BIA game on iPhone/touch. Brothers in Arms: Hour of Heroes. Terminator: Salvation runs on the same game engine.

  • Charliewayz says:

How is gameloft spitting out knockoffs when a game like this has never been seen on the iphone?? Gameloft is the official KINGS of gaming on the #1 handheld device in the world..The IPHONE!!!!

  • jackson says:

no matter what, there knock offs, which is not bad. thats as good as it can get. sony and nintendo will never release games for ipod cause there afraid of competition. i wouldnt own a ds and psp if i could get all those games on the iphone. sooooo many games in the world are knockoffs, and many of them have something uniquely different about them that make them worth owning and going down in history. example: heavenly sword is a knockoff of god of war. but there are so many different things in heavenly sword (not including the actual storyline) that make it worth owning. knockoffs are a great part of life that give us a taste of the impossible.

    • Rozz says:

"..Knockoffs are a great part of life that give us a taste of the impossible"?

I don't know what you're smoking but I want some.

      • jackson says:

        ITS GOOD SHIT

      • Kam says:

i cant believe you dont understand the context in which he said that. what are YOU smoking?

"a taste of the impossible" = WE CANT GET THESE GAMES ON IPHONE SO THE KNOCKOFFS ARE GIVING US "A TASTE OF THE IMPOSSIBLE" (impossible = big dev games like soul calibur and COD)

is that simple enough for you?

      • Rozz says:

Sheesh, you stupid idiot, of course it's obvious what he meant, but that was a very funny sentence. Get a f__'in sense of humor and turn off the caps lock.

  • Kita says:

The fact of the matter is that people are more likely to buy familiar games more than something unique and new. One of my favorite iphone games ever is the new "spider" game but I doubt many people will give that game a chance because it doesn't look appealing and they don't care to see what it's all about.

I don't think making iphone games based on successful console franchises is a bad idea at all because it's obvious that market is accepting it :)

  • john doe says:

looks cool , and i'd like to buy such games but oh well … nonsense without a real d-pad :(

  • Batsugun says:

    TO all the HATERS.

Gameloft is obviously a company that loves games as you can see in the quality of the games they put out. Gameloft is taking advantage by filling a market these other big brand companies are leving wide open. While other developers say you cant do that on the Iphone, Gameloft is doing it and doing it well. Modern Combat shows them all how to do an FPS on the iphone. Gameloft is a big reason I hardly ever play my PSP or DS. They see the potential in the Iphone that others have ignored.

I’m sure you will start seeing the games you want from those big brand developers showing up on the Iphone soon. You can thank Gameloft and many other early Iphone developers for paving the way. It will be because of these companies who "have no shame" that we will get to play many great games.

  • Awesome. Keep up the good work, Gameloft!! :)

  • geh says:

    This game looks really sexist.

  • Fokion says:

Thoroughly impressed with SC Broken Destiny on the PSP. I know it's just screenshots for the time being, but this looks laughable in comparison. You get what you pay for, at least most of the time.

  • matriax says:

Yes, Looks very similar to Soul Calibur, but if the game have a good playability and good controls ¿Whats the problem?.

    • Moroboshi says:

How exactly will a fighting game play well with no buttons? Fighting games are difficult enough on a 360 due to the poor d-pad, so with no d-pad at all it wil be a total mess.

  • sa66o6 says:

This game have a past!!!And what i mean by that is that gameloft have one java game called mediaval combat. In this game there were 7 characters. On the first screenshot there is Arthur(i never really liked it in the past game,he have some kind of energy attack),in the second Scurd(it was a big tough guy with axe,who trows fire balls),and in the third, the guy says Faust,He was one of my favorites, and the fire guy is Diablo.Diablo was the same as faust. If you have old phone just download the game at 4 shared and try it.The game was great, but not deep enough.

  • I have been waiting for something like this since the first days of the App Store.
And Soul Calibur was a true love for me :) So, this will be my most instant instant buy! :)

  • ImNoSuperMan says:

It does resemble soul caliber. And if it's anywhere close to that in gameplay too it'll be an insta buy for me :)

  • wateracid says:

Seriously who cares even if gameloft copy so long they make great games they rule the app store.
