'Backbreaker Football: Tackle Alley' Coming to iPhone

1NaturalMotion once again asks the eternal question of "Are you ready for some football?" with the announcement of Backbreaker Football: Tackle Alley, an iPhone game based on a mini-game from Backbreaker, a game currently in development for the XBOX 360 and PS3. The game takes advantage of "morpheme", NaturalMotion's iPhone graphics engine which allegedly "produces animation of a quality not seen before on the iPhone and iPod Touch providing the on-screen characters with a fluidity of motion rivaling that experienced on home consoles."

The iPhone version of the game is being developed by Ideaworks3D, the company behind Airplay SDK, a cross-platform environment that enables high-quality 3D graphics across a ton of mobile devices including the iPhone. The list of mobile phone games they've been involved in is pretty impressive and includes titles such as Dirge of Cerberus Lost Episode – Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid Mobile, and Project Gotham Racing among others.

In the game, players use the accelerometer and on-screen buttons to control their player through waves of defenders. You will be able to sprint, dodge, and spin past your opponents to rack up combos and score multipliers making your way to the end zone. Also included is Facebook integration to broadcast your high scores to your friends. Backbreaker Football: Tackle Alley will be available on the App Store sometime this fall.

Here is a trailer for the console version of Backbreaker:

  • McChumpers says:

i like the way it looks. as long as it doesn't play like madden or blitz 2 i will be happy. ha.

  • NaturalMotion says:

The screenshots above are from the iPhone build!

  • Finch says:

are you ready for some pre-rendered fake gameplay…

    • SalsaMD says:

      how so?

      • Finch says:

umm, because that was all pre-rendered fake game play footage. Screen shots are real but the video was totally pre-rendered.

      • Gene says:

That WAS real gameplay (notice the "actual gameplay footage" caption at the bottom?), the screenshots are from the iPhone version, while the video is of the console version of the game.

If you're still not convinced, look at the split screen multiplayer portion of the video, it's in-sync and the receiver's outline blinks, what rendered video would include that? Definitely real.

    • Noah says:

I've demoed the game on the 360. It's real and it looks THAT good.

      • Myles says:

Dude you demo'd it!!!??? PLEASE do us all a favor and go to the backbreaker forums and tell us about it >>> http://forum.backbreakergame.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1 the forum is full of dedicated members who just want to know more about this game, yet the devs are pretty sadistic and like not telling us ANYTHING. please head over and let us know what it was like. thanks man

  • Vende says:

Is it from the iphone? I assume that when the say console version, they mean it's from an 360 or PS3?

    • Eli says:

The screenshots are from the iPhone version of the game, the trailer is the E3 preview of the 360/PS3 version.

  • CaseyLay says:

I'm going to laugh at Gameloft and EA if this beats NFL and Madden.

    • LBG says:

This shouldn't really be a direct competitor with Gameloft's NFL 10 and EA's Madden, as this game is more of an arcade game and is about racking up points from combos. In other words, it is not a fully fledged US football game like NFL or Madden. It looks good anyway, it's nice to have a change of style. Graphics look pretty good for an iPhone game.

      • SalsaMD says:

Tantamount I suppose to Baseball Sluggers wrt a full true baseball game (which I am still waiting for…; ) )

  • zeb says:

I think it looks pretty cool. Could be a fun arcade type game.

  • ltcommander.data says:

It'd be great if NaturalMotion's interest and new Morpheme animation engine for the iPhone peaks Rockstar's interest in the iPhone since GTA IV uses NaturalMotion's Euphoria animation engine. I believe Backbreaker for console uses Euphoria and if Morpheme is used in the iPhone version, perhaps it's easy to port between the two, which would help financially. Certainly, Gangstar and Gameloft has shown there is money to be had. Although, I'm hoping if Rockstar does bring something to the iPhone, it'll have the content breadth comparable to DS or PSP versions, to justify and sustain $10+ price points.

  • It looks so cool (the trailer, not sure about the game play though). Anyway, could not wait for this game.

  • DaveWorld says:

I can't wait for this. What I would also like to see (or feel) is some type of rumble or vibration on the iPhone/iPod Touch with this game.

  • charliewayz says:

I didnt buy NFL 2010 cause i was waiting for Madden 10. Now It looks like im not buying Madden 10 and gonna wait for BackBReaker Football. The IPHONE games just keep getting better and better.

  • Donovan says:

    Finch got owned :)
