First Hands-On Video of Gameloft's First Person Shooter: 'Modern Combat'

posted by arn on August 9th, 2009 1:02 AM EDT in Upcoming Games, iPhone games, iPod touch games

sandCarbonated.tv was able to get this hands on video of Gameloft's upcoming first person shooter Modern Combat: Sandstorm. The game is described as an early "alpha" build of the unfinished game, though this conflicts with reports we'd heard that it had already been submitted.

The player walks through the controls which provide the following components:

  • Left side virtual d-pad allowing forward/backward/left/right movement
  • Tap-and-drag on screen for free look
  • Contextual fire button (marked by an 'X') that appears in the right side of the screen to fire
  • Other contextual buttons that appear – such as crouch/stand.
  • Weapon switch button on top right. Sniper zoom on bottom right.

This looks amazing, but there's still the mystery of the release date, some people are saying it's submitted, some people are saying "Fall 2009". I wish Gameloft would set the release date straight. :( They're just leaving us in the dark here! Other than that, it looks amazing.

  • AnhonestOp says:

I gotta say that looks fantastic. I could live with the controls for bia, as they allowed you to adjust the sensitivity of your viewing speed. If we can do the same in this, as the speed he was looking around was rather slow, then i'm interested. But ive learned more then enough to know not to make it a first day purchase. I'll be waiting for TA's review and some user comments first. Price is irrelevant.

  • Nuke77 says:

What do you guys suppose are those arrows at the bottom of the screen that point left and right? As far as I can tell, they don't do anything. Also, I was just watching the other gameplay video that TouchArcade featured a few days back, and I noticed some cycling numbers on the top left of the screen next to the pause button. Any guesses as to what they're for? Check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks.

    • Adams Immersive says:

I haven't seen the other video, but could the numbers be an FPS counter? (Common in testing an app under development.)

And the arrows at the bottom… strafe/dodge?

    • ZZMitch says:

I am guessing those are for strafing left and right. Not sure though…

      • robert says:

nope, 'cause in the movie you could see the strafe movement with the left virtual d-pad…

But I too do not know what the arrows are for.

  • jaber says:

Apple should release new iPhone SDK with updated GameKit to allow developers misuse volume buttons as fire buttons (Remember jailbreak-only Snapture app?).

  • along123 says:

Whoa! It's an instant buy for me! There's practically no other games that offers this much! I just hope it's not on the premium price list! Oh, yeah. Why don't they let us play this demo on our iphone? Even if it's a demo I definitely want to try it on my iphone like right now? LoL. Can't wait. I love Gameloft!!

    • Kudzaikun says:

Does anyone know if an iphone 3g was used or an 3gs, just wondering about performance

      • RaZrVIN says:

i'm pretty sure he was using an iPod Touch 2G for the demonstration, but i could be wrong.

      • Henrique says:

        @RaZrVIN
You're right. It doesn't have the speaker like the iPhone.
If it runs this smooth on a 2G touch, I can only imagine how it'll run on the 3GS. Hope they include some 3GS-only effects.

  • Totalsam says:

The controls actually look quite do-able, though I'd appreciate a non-contextual fire button.

In times of frustration sometimes I just want to shoot at a wall…or a fellow squad member.

Does that make me a bad person?

  • K says:

    Wow, this looks fantastic!!!

My only complain is directed at TA- can we please get iPhone-friendly videos?…..

  • LBG says:

Doesn't Obama have a county to run? Why is he playing games?

    lol

He does look a bit like Obama (if he was of hispanic descent).

Nice game btw, the controls work like I guessed.
This game should be great. Definately an instant buy for me.

    • LOLCATZ says:

That's like saying he looks like John Cleese, if he was from an Anglo-Saxon descent…

      • LBG says:

Yeah, well I am not very familiar with people of different races. I live in a part of England where there are almost no black people. In my school of 1000 students, only 2 were black! Black people are very rare where I come from. I think we sent most of the over to the USA as slaves.

    • Bilal says:

Where i come from you would be laughed at…

  • Major says:

Looks good… but every shooter needs to do one thing right …. make shooting fun.

Above anything else… Make Shooting fun.

  • christian88 says:

if this game goes multiplayer, then, the hell with my computer :) )) hahah , awesomeness

  • Dan says:

Whoever is speaking throughout that video, really stumbles over words.

  • Esqalade says:

Just Gameloft doing what Gameloft does best, produce the most consistent high quality apps of any developer in the App Store. To think you can have this experience on your cell phone (lest we forget that is the "platform") is truly amazing. I have 5-6 Gameloft titles on my phone now and this looks like #8 (#7 will surely be the GTA clone which Im hoping is coming out soon). As long as Gameloft keeps its price points between $5 and $10 for new titles, I will keep buying these games.

    • Ataru says:

I wouldn't say Gameloft have been consistently high quality at all. If anything the only constant through their releases to date has been terrible frame rates and mediocre graphics.

Compare something like Sparta or Terminator, with their slutterly frame rates to the graphically *far* more impressive Firemint Real Racing. I've always got the impression that Gameloft titles are rushed to market, with no time for polish or optimisation.

This video of Call of Gameloft has a smooth framerate (surprisingly), but I wonder if it's running on a 3GS. Time will tell. Although in typical Gameloft style, a total lack of originality or flare.

      • DannyV says:

Dude, why do you have to be such a hater? And, the game is running on an iPod Touch, you can tell because there's no little slit (opening) on the top part of the device.

      • Esqalade says:

WOW – what exactly are you expecting out of your cell phone? Since the original developers of console games are just now coming around to developing games for iphone (EA for example), I am happy Gameloft is around to develop games like Let's Golf, Hero of Sparta, Brothers in Arms, etc. They clearly have the best graphics for the device and I never experienced lags on either my 2G iphone or my 3Gs. HATER.

      • twentyone says:

        Ataru is EXACTLY right!!
You guys that call people haters for saying the truth about Gameloft games are clueless!! I own most of Gameloft's titles and even though I like them I still completely agree with everything Ataru says. Geez some of you guys are sensitive!! Try to be OBJECTIVE!

Having said that, this game looks to be a better quality product than Gameloft usually puts out and I am optimistic that this will be a solid game.

      • Ataru says:

A 'hater'? So let me see, anyone who isn't gushing with excitement and dares to point out facts about Gameloft titles (they have poor frame rates, lack polish, and are unoriginal) is a 'hater'.

Right, okay. GO GAMELOFT! 15FPS IS FINE FOR ME!

      • Esqalade says:

Yes the games are so bad that you keep buying them. If you own "most of the gameloft titles" then you have made your decision about gameloft with your wallet. Thank you come again. What exactly are you expecting, PSP from your phone or Ipod? You bought an iPod or cell phone and you got a gaming device for free. This device is just coming into it's own with the 3gs. I'm curious – what titles do you like on the iPhone?

      • crishnak says:

First, I know Gameloft for about 5-6 years now and been playing their titles on the first N-Gage as well as on Java enabled handsets. I sometimes had a hard time with this company and stopped buying their titles when they failed on Rise of Lost Empires for mobile until I got my 3G. I always critized their lack of inovation and they still are copying a lot. But I NEVER experienced frame rate issues on my 3G and always enjoyed their iPhone games, at least those that I bought (HoS, BiA, AC, TS). Not much to complain about those games. Especially the graphics on AC where awesome. But honestly, comparing the graphics of Real Racing and any of those is stupid. Racing games mostly look better because there´s no need for complex animations and (mostly) maping. You can use the polygons to create cool looking car models, instead of complex animated character models and maps.
So if Gameloft games look a bit edgy and sometimes have frame rate issues (which, as I said, never happened on my phone) it´s mostly because they have more complex graphics.

      • wegmans says:

Um you mean Hero of Sparta, right? show me where that ran at 15 FPS? Pretty sure that was a very high quality game. I didn't get it at its max price, but i also didn't get it at $1 either. I'd say you're a hater.

      • ataru says:

Hero of Sparta had an absolutely abysmal frame rate. If any of you Gameloft fans think it ran smoothy, try playing a game on a PSP or DS, or any other game system for that matter. 60fps is the target frame rate developers aspire to, that gives a perfectly smooth update (see God of War, Gran Turismo, Soul Calibur, Call of Duty etc). Failing that the fall back is 30fps (see most console games). For a long time anything lower has been totally unacceptable.

No Gameloft title has ever run at 30fps. Hero of Sparta ran, at best, at 15fps, and often lower. Some people lack the ability to judge frame rates at all (I'm not talking about actually counting fps in realtime, just making an educated guess based on the smoothness of the update), and therefore may well think 15fps looks fine. For others, especially those who grew up on the 8-bit systems where 60fps was the standard for 99.9% of games, such low fps are ain instant game killer.

And to those who say 'what do you expect, it's a phone', I say this. The GPU and CPU in an iPhone are a *lot* more powerful than what you would find in a DS. DS games run at 60fps or 30fps, not through any great amount of hardware power, as it is clearly an incredibly antiquated system, but through developer effort and design. Can you imagine Square putting out a Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest game on the DS at 15fps? It would never, ever happen.

But frame rate is only one half of my dislike of Gameloft. The other is what seems to be their entire company ethos, which is 'copy, ripp off, clone'. They are so devoid of original thinking it would be funny if they didn't take it so seriously. It's so easy to be original, you just need to give a damn about what you are working on.

        Rant over.

      • Hmar9333 says:

Goddammit I hate you Ataru, all Gameloft games run FINE on my devices!

I don't give a flying $#!T if they are rip-off games (They are!) Gameloft are filling the voids in the app store, there is no solid FPS, so they make one,

Also, if you are saying Gameloft is a rip-off company, I guess you also think that Infinity Ward are a bunch of retards as well (Medal of Honour anyone?)

But I guess the bottom line is: YOU SUCK, DEAL WITH IT!

  • DannyV says:

HOOOOOLY CRAP, I want and I want NOW!!!! OK, all childish behavior aside, let me just say this game looks amazing! I can't wait until the release, I will buy this the first day it comes out!

  • -=XX=-Nephilim says:

    This looks amazing…

Wonder what ID thinks now about "on rail" approach!? :p

  • Hey cool says:

    Great game!As always.
And for the "gameloft haters",stop talking bull****s,just see the reviews of the game(hero of sparta maybe),everyone is saying "great graphics,it shows what the iphone is capable of" and all sorts of good thinks for the games.
Your problem (yes you Ataru),is that you can't play other than racing games! Most of the people that don't like super cool games, are either unable to buy them,or can't play them.

    • ataru says:

You need to try an awful lot harder there my friend. I just like to play games which are appropriate to the hardware on which they run. On my PSP I like Metal Gear Portable Ops, God of War, Crisis Core, Disgaea etc. With my DS I like Dragon Quest, Ace Attorney, and Mario & Luigi etc. On my PS3 and 360 I'm all about RPGs and FPSs.

As for iPhone, with such limited control options the only action games I have ever seen which actually work are ones with incredibly stripped back control schemes (such as Infinity Gene). When a developer tries to replicate more complex multi-button controls WITHOUT ANY BUTTONS it's always a total disaster. Instead I think iPhone gaming works best for games like Star Defense (although I'm growing tired of Tower Defence), Racing Games, and tilt games like Blimp and Rolando 2. Obviously puzzle games (Peggle etc) work well too.

So please actually think carefully before launching an attack on someone again. It's really rather infantile and pointless otherwise.

  • Motnahpraw says:

i wish this game has vertex shaders like Real Racing!

  • bubbo says:

dont know, gameloft are only releasing copys of existing games, hero of sparta=god of war,the golf game=Wii golf game, gangstar=gta, now modern combat=call of duty modern warfare…

  • iamPro says:

From the look of the controls, I don't think it's possible to aim and shoot at the same time.

Although I'm pretty sure Gameloft must have tried out all sorts of schemes to come up with the best solution, this solution still shows that the iphone's biggest problem is the lack of buttons.

I wonder if the SDK allows developers to use the volume buttons on top as an input method other than controlling the volume. Using the volume button as the fire button should solve the problem of having to aim first, then stop aiming, lift your thumb and press the fire button.

  • Louard says:

Truth be told I thought the Terminator game looked nice and the controls were usable. I just hope this game has a.i. that's half decent enough to make it worth playing!

  • Grab says:
