Upcoming 'Wizard Warfare' Video Explained

Some videos have been circulating around the Internet and our forums of Sugar Devil Studios' upcoming game, Wizard Warfare. Aside from some great concept art, some cool looking screenshots, and a few mysterious movies, their web site doesn't have much information on it either regarding the actual gameplay.
We got in touch with Niamh Kenny, one of the Wizard Warfare team members and got him to explain the game. Wizard Warfare is a turn-based artillery-style game similar to Worms [App Store] or Star Hogs [App Store] set in a fantasy environment with magic spells like "Flame of Desolation" and "Wanton Cruelty" instead of bazookas and missiles. Players will be able to play as one of six wizards and battle across five full 3D arenas using 33 different spells. Also included is a two player mode.
Kenny sent us this video of a single turn in Wizard Warfare:
Here is what is happening in this video:
At this point in the game, the player has chosen their character and used their gold to buy spells from the store. The more expensive the spell, the more powerful it is, and the more damage it will do on impact. Each of these spells has a color, and so the player also chooses a defense spell, trying to anticipate the color of the enemy's attack.
Using your finger, you can move the camera around to see the enemy Wizard's position, and then aim the spell towards them. Once an attack spell is launched, the opposing Wizard can activate their defense spell at any time (it's a rune with a sphere of energy that expands quickly from the Wizard.) If you can destroy the attacking spell at a maximum distance from your Wizard, you can avoid taking any damage, but the closer the explosion, the more pain that's suffered. Also, if you successfully match the color of the attack spell, your defense is more than twice as effective.
When a Wizard's health reaches zero, they explode in a ball of flame and the winning player receives bonus gold and advances to the next level.
With more gold, more advanced spells open up, and the player can roll out the heavy artillery.
As each level progresses, the enemy AI gets more accurate with its shots, more effective with its blocking spells, is positioned more strategically, and has access to more powerful spells.
To win the entire game, you must defeat all 5 of the Wizards on each of the 3 levels of difficulty.
Wizard Warfare is still in development, so keep an eye on Touch Arcade for more videos and information on the game as it surfaces.

…so this is pretty much "Worms for Nerds" then?
just kidding; but the gameplay looks kinda slow.. looks nice though.
Background graphics are very appealing but thats about it…
Very nice graphics, but it does look slow, if it's just one on one I can't imagine it holding my attention very long. BTW, I hope the menu graphics get upgraded to meet the quality of the rest of the game's graphics.
The thought of fantasy themes Star Hogs-like game play totally revved my engine……………Untill I saw the video.
It looks ok, just diseased with horribly slow gameplay. I do like the offensive spell/devensive spell colour idea. That's pretty cool, but the pace of the game is just really lame looking, and if there is only going to be one wizard, I can't see myself getting this. The visuals, with the exception of the menus, look great. I dunno, I'll keep an eye on it.
Couldn't help but smile the first time I saw this video.
Gorgeous!! i just pray the spells are do their thing in high speed, because the pace of watching a fireball glide slowly across a landscape would grow old within minutes.
(I know it's way early).
sounds short
You had me at "plague of toads!"
Hey, isn't Niamh (Neve) a girl's name?
No animations of the wizards here!? Why?
I think Developer spent 90% of time making the background
Dont see it wrong.
Dont see it as a bad star hogs or worms clone or w/e
with some cool effects.
See it as a enhanced tanks game
Could i think be fun to play against each other through p2p for when u bored or in class or w/e
impressive graphic, but gameplay sucks
i think it's kinda cool for the wizard/magic theme. Maybe, like the others suggest, to put in more interesting stuff. Make it fast, maybe multiplayer too? Maybe, not just wizards alone but with a few soldiers, elf, archer, forest ranger or the whole fantasy world nine yards to make it more engaging with story?
Definitely, I'll keep the lookout for this game. I luv fantasy themed games. Ha ha.
This needs to be a multilayer / mmo, single player sounds like it will get boring after abit..
i think this game is going to be a very good game. You should look at the you tube videos for wizard warfare
The graphics are really impressive, now, someone please use them in an extremely expansive action adventure/rpg/platformer PLEASE.
