titlescreenBrian Robbins of Fuel Games sent out a notice that their upcoming Lifeboat game was nearing release and that it would be submitted in the next few days. This reminded us that we had some footage of the game from WWDC that we never posted.

The game is a tilt-based casual title that requires you to save people off a sinking ship by sliding them into the lifeboats. It comes with a campaign mode in which you progress across different boats with slightly different layouts and shorter time limits. Money earned can then be used to buy upgrades such as dynamic ballasts, water pumps, swimming lessons, and lifeboat grace areas.

Some people are going to fall into the water, and you can save them by tapping them. Wait too long and they may drown or get eaten by a shark.

Of all the games that've been on the front page so far I'd have to say this one seems the most enjoyable, it's new idea, concept seems defined for the device (both use of touch and tilt) Simple, yet probably kinda hectic gameplay.

My one question is, what if the user can't play based upon their environment? Bumpy ride or that sort of thing, and another question, can I play holding it upside down (if you lie on your back)?

But it definitely looks fun =)

    • http://www.fuelgames.com/ Brian Robbins

I haven't tried playing on my back, but it will calibrate to whatever angle you're holding it at, so in theory that could work.

Bumpy ride shouldn't be too much of an issue unless it's so bumpy that you just can't hold your iPhone or iPod Touch still enough to see the screen. And if that's the case, I'm not sure there's much we can do :)

Despite all the crew and passengers of the Titanic probably turning in their graves right now, this game does look fun. But, isn't it strange how a lot games seem to be based on tragic events. Just a passing thought...

    • Rozz

I think enough time has passed that not too many Titanic survivors will be offended (not that that was the only time a ship ever wrecked... until the 20th century if you got on a ship there was a pretty good chance you weren't coming back.)

And yeah, games tend to be about tragic events, or at least about the many violent and horrible things that can happen, but there's generally not too much action or drama when things are just going right. Every game can't be The Sims.

Besides a little gallows humor is healthy. We're all going to die, after all, may as well laugh about it.

Anyway, love the art direction and this looks like a fun game.

I love the clever holographic effect with the ship's smoke stack!

    • Brad Newsom

No, tilting the iphone tilts the boat. Its not simulating depth.

      • Lord Gek

Okay, it is tilting the boat, sure, but I swear it looks like the smoke stack is poking OUT of the screen in that video, intended or not.

      • Brad Newsom

Thats because a camera has one view. You have two eyes. It won't look the same in real life.

I will be defiantly buying this the day it comes out. It looks nicely finished, a little slow on movements, but looks fun with a comical side to it. I mean come on you know the annoying ones on there, it will be funny to see them eaten or leave them be.

I love the effect of the ship pitching in the sea as you rotate the iPhone. Any chance you have levels where there are strong waves that will tilt the boat and you have to counter-tilt? Also, too bad the characters are so small because I bet you could have some great artwork/make it easier to grab them out of the water.

    • http://www.fuelgames.com/ Brian Robbins

The initial version will not have big waves that you have to counter-balance but that's a great idea for a future update, thanks!

The characters in the final version are quite a bit bigger. The video the TouchArcade people posted is from when we showed them the game at WWDC about a month ago. We've made a lot of tweaks and improvements since then. The most visible changes are that the characters are bigger, and the tilt feels a lot more responsive.

We should be posting a new video on our website soon so you can see what it looks like.
