    I bought it - I'd say skip it. Here's my over-abbreviated summary.

First off, it's not awful - it's really not. I think a lot of us were waiting and hoping that this would bring a new level of polish to iphone racing games. If so, you'll be disappointed. It auto accelerates for you, you tilt to turn, and it feels just like any other 99 cent racer.

The graphics are decent, but they look better in screenshots than moving - the framerate on my iPhone 3G is not so hot.

The menus / presentations / sound are great. That's the part where you can tell this was developed by a major company and not by an independent developer. Anyhow, after 10 minutes of playing, I realized how bored I was - I put it down and I have already removed it from my iPhone. Like i said, it's not a bad game - but it doesn't bring anything new to the game. For $9.99, go buy flight control, fieldrunners, and some lunch for yourself.

    • Dave

OUCH! I feared this. I remember seeing video of it early on and not being impressed with the car handling or physics. The backgrounds looked great though. Too bad I really wanted to like this one. (Of course I'm not writing it off yet, but this didn't boost my confidence.)

so this is really just pole position with outstanding visuals? ;)

    • f e a r l e s s

You have no idea what you are talking about. I've seen better stuff from independent developers than the big guys! The big guys don't care what we want, they have a name and that's what sells.

    • Bernardo

i disagree with you completely, this is the best racing game i have played in psp or iphone in a long time!!!!!

This is the best game by far. Dont listen to the critisism. I donwlaoded it, but as soon as it comes in the UK I WILL BUY IT!!

Best car game, you will notice that the camera works well when you turn, the controls are easy and logical. There is a bit of lag with the FPS but just turn off your device then back on, this will minimalise it, but EA will have an update soon for it hopefully :)

    Definitly recommended..!

ok my impressions: first off this game is not worth 10 bucks. i got quite a lag on my ipod touch 1st gen 32gb. for someone who has been waiting 6 monthes for this game i'll say right now i'm dissapionted ea! the graphics are ok, i hate how the car controls tilt steering it doesn't feel relestic like in a car. hopefully since i like realism real racing will be better. also the missions are rather boring and i hate the auto acclerate. still in my opinion this game gets 7/10 just needs work and if ea would just update their games i'm sure they would get more customers:)

I'm in the UK so I've downloaded it off appulo.us, and without taking price into account I would say it's certainly one of the best racers on the iPod Touch / iPhone. The graphics are better than other racing games (even if only by a little) and the menus are well done, it's quite easy to handle the cars and the control scheme makes sense, it does however slow you down too much when you drift round corners and crashes look tacky, but they're both really minor points. I feel it probably would be worth £5, but considering most games are quite conservatively priced, it doesn't quite deserve the price tag. I'll check out the options to see if here's a tap to steer choice.

At default at least, it's auto accelerate, tilt to steer, tap to break, swipe up for nitrous, swipe down for slow-mo, and two finger swipe down to pause.

Oh, and in response to dean - Yeah, the cars sort of feel like they're on rails or something, but I can look past that considering it's for the iPod :p Yet to see a racer that pulls off realistic feeling handling. As for lag, i've seen none on my Touch 2G, but it does have the fastest processor of the iDevices.

Is there no way to edit posts here? :( Well, first, sorry for managing to triple post, second, no, there's no tap to steer, actually kinda surprised about that... Oh, and it's not actually the drifting that slows you down, it's touching the grass / pavement that slows you down loads, I just manage to do it whilst drifting xD

Not available in New Zealand either. Spore is, so I guess it will get here eventually. Maybe they're being slow with the rollout in case there are 'problems' again. :D

Doesn't matter .. it's a bit late in the game to be coming out with just another average racer (especially at that price.) My phone is already full of car, bike, boat, and jetski fare. I'll pass.

I agree with Newjorg: Are there any associates of the toucharcade team that have access to non-US iTunes stores? These articles should try to specify in what territories games are available if possible, or they should be ammended with this info once it's noticed in the comments. (Not all readers read the comments.) :)

So it is :O Musta come out midnight. £6 is just too much... Then again I think anything over £3 is overpriced on the app store, just not come across anything i'd pay that for - at a stretch, maybe Zen Bound, but that's it.

I've been waiting for this game for 9 months. And after all that waiting, I'm not in the mood to buy it anymore - bought other titles with the money (Assassins Creed, iDracula, Wolf3D)

Sorry EA - you pissed your fans off by delaying it so long...hope gamers punish you for it.

Hmmm, got quite excited only to find out it's not out in the UK! Reluctantly must agree with a previous post, that TA should really specify where it is available in the world if it is to live up the 'global' website reputation thing.

To anyone who was looking forward to buying this game and doesn't as a result of many of the comments on this site: you are doing yourself a great disservice.

To my eyes, this makes every other racing game on my iPod look and feel like some cheap flash game. If you've been waiting to buy Need For Speed, for goodness' sake, BUY IT! TEN DOLLARS IS NOTHING! To make something of an old man rant, when I first got my NES, we had to buy games for $70 bucks just based on the box art ;) Now you've got videos and screenshots and the whole shebang - if it looks remotely interesting, is $10 really too much? You might love it, regardless of what everyone else says.

Please don't forget .. we're just beginning to see what these devices are capable of. If people aren't willing to spend $10 now, what incentive is there for any developer to really put a lot of work into developing stuff that pushes the hardware to its absolute limits? (I realize there are lots of 99 cent games that are extraordinarily fun as well, but none of them are really boundary-pushers)

Also, don't forget the hardware you're working with here. This is a handheld, touchscreen device with no physical controls and some pretty definite graphical limitations. It's not a PS3 or Xbox 360, nor will it ever feel exactly like one. A lot of comments seem review games like NFS the same way one would a console game, and I don't think that's fair.

Just trying to keep things in perspective here.

PS: I think Need For Speed Underground is a lot of fun.

    • Peter321

      AMEN!

I couldn't agree more - $10 is really nothing for a videogame - just compare to prices on the PSP or NDS and be happy you have an iPhone/iTouch

    • Mr Payne

I bought the game as soon as I heard it was available and I wasn't even thinking about purchasing it in the first place. I have bought and played other racing games and this one is the most polished. The controls are the best of the bunch for my use. The framerate lags a tiny bit when switching songs. I have had lots of fun with it so far.

As for the price, $10 is worth it to me. I accept the game for what it is and don't relish on features that may or may not make the game, "like I want it to be. me me me"... I'm not going to compare it to anything 'cause I just don't do that.

In conclusion: It's a fun game on its own and worth the price of a few drinks. I definately lasts longer than a few drinks too!

      • Mr Payne

...compared it to other systems I meant.

I played NFS on my friends PSP, and the intro graphics were brilliant, but to concur with one of the people above, I don't think it is the best racer by far, although it is still very fun for what i've played so far.

I think a racer with better mechanics is Fastlane still, which feels like a console quality racer, but extremely difficult. NFS is more of an incremental upgrade to the racers on the iphone like asphalt, ferrari, and pink slip.

Until we get a racer better than Burnout Legends on the PSP, then these racers on the iphone will always still be 3rd fiddle.

  • jpxdude
