Namco has released a free trial version of Pac Man [App Store].

The free version of this classic game offers only the first stage, which might be enough for many fans.

We previously looked at the controls for Ms. Pac-Man which shares the same system as Pac Man and found that the swipe control is the best.

It appears Namco is exploring ways to boost sales. The company previously dropped the price of both Ms. Pac-Man and Pac-Man from $9.99 to $7.99. We're not sure if a Lite version is going to really capture people, however, since it may provide many with just enough Pac-Man for them to realize they don't need the full game.

Unfortunately I cannot install this as it is incompatible with my iPod (1st gen Touch)... I have contacted Namco, though no response yet. This happened with Gaia lite as well and David Breitigram's response was excellent. Has anyone else had this problem with Pac-Man lite?

I also cannot install this application because it's not compatible with my 1st gen iPod touch. I hope this was just a bug in the review process and will be fixed soon.

I have Ms. Pac-Man and think it is worth the price. I realize not everyone will think so, but for me this is still a great game that offers infinite replay value unlike most modern games. That makes it worth more to me. The swipe control scheme is the best one by far, but realize that it does take some getting use to as it is quite different from using a joystick. Once you get the hang of it, though, it works great.

    Everyone - download it!

Maybe that's how we can get Namco to realize that we definately are interested in their retro-games but just unwilling to pay those ridiculously high prices.

Half the price would be OK, and Ms.Pac-Man and Pac-Man in a bundle for less than $ 5.00.

I downloaded the lite version... I do wish they'd price this game reasonably. Really, $5 is plenty, although I probably wouldn't buy it at $5 either. Ideally, it should be $5 and include pac-man, ms. pac-man and galaga. (When the heck are they going to get off their duff and get galaga on the iphone, anyway?) $8 per game is just ridiculous.

No first gen touch love here either.

This is a growing trend that I going to be very upset about if it continues.

it was a rip off on ipod video for 5bucks and even more at $7...

i used to play pacman back in my childhood days, but it's not a game i would play constantly enough to be worth the price... there are better, fresh and more enjoyable games for that price or even lower.

now a retro game i would pay to have on iphone is enduro... still play on my atari 2600 every now and then!

Of course, Namco gives a full version for the Google Android for free. But they know how profitable the App Store has been for many.

At $7, that's greed at its core. Haven't they got enough of everyone's quarters over the past 28 years?

$9.99 for Pac Man?!?!?!?!?! Stuff that in a pipe and smoke it. Seriously. What do these companies think??? With great games selling for $5 and less, they want us to, ONCE AGAIN, pay for games we've already paid for 10 times over, on this console, that console, in the arcade, etc.

It's Pac Man. If you want to sell a ton of copies, sell them for $1.99. Who wouldn't buy Pac Man for $1.99, if for no other reason than to enjoy a brief flashback to when life was a bit simpler. But $9.99. No way.

Tried it, played it, never was much of a fan for the original and charging $9.99/£4.99 is just unbelievable. I don't know what they were smoking but it must of been pretty powerful :P

I for the life of me can't comprehend why Namco would make a bone headed decision to make this demo work with 2nd generation iPod Touch, but not the 1st. I'm thinking it may have been a Freudian slip when they submitted it to the app store that they marked it as iPod Touch (second generation.) This would otherwise only make sense if the 2nd gen Touch had features the 1st one doesn't that Namco was taking advantage of.. Otherwise considering that the full game works on a first gen Touch, I find the choice to make it work only with the 2nd gen Touch very odd.

Wow, I forgot just how much the original PacMan sucked balls. Cruncher for DOS was much more fun.

I would question paying $1 for PacMan... let alone $8

I've heard that Apple changed the default app submission to the 2nd generation iPod Touch. As a result some developers are are overlooking this change and making submissions that make their apps incompatible with the first generation iPod Touch. I suspect Namco may have overlooked this change when they submitted Pac-Man Lite. I think we need to knock heads with Apple over this.

I still haven't heard from Namco, but it looks like they have have changed the settings as I just re-downloaded Pac-man lite and it installed fine on my 1st gen iPod Touch....

Well, the demo was nice for illustrating that only one of the input mechanisms works (swipe mode), but at leeast it does work reasonably well.

But how well does it work when you're at the 9th key level?

And even so, it's still way over-priced. I am not whining that I want it to be free or $0.99, there's a certain value to retro-games for me ... I've bought Pac-Man on almost every platform it has shipped on.

But charging more on the iPhone, ostensibly just because it IS the iPhone, is silly. There is no way this took more work than the Xbox 360 version, and that has online leaderboards and achievements, and had to go through the rigourous XBLA approval process.

When it finally reaches the same price as it is on the iPod I'll pick this up (same for Ms. Pac-Man), until then I'm happy waiting.

It seems that NAMCO have updated the listing and PAC-MAN Lite now works on 1G iPod Touch. I've already uploaded it to my 1G ;)
