Edmund McMillen, one of the creators of such classics as Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac, has been working on an Isaac spinoff game for at least a few years now. It’s called The Legend of Bum-bo and as the name implies it stars the plucky coin-gobbling little helper Bum-bo from The Binding of Isaac. We first heard about The Legend of Bum-bo when it was announced as one of the games being published by the then-upstart premium gaming publisher The Label back in early 2017. It was a little over a year later that we got our first proper look at Bum-bo, which showed a game with a cardboard cutout, almost shoebox diorama-like art style and various types of puzzle gameplay including a match-4 game. It seemed intriguing to say the least and like something that would fit perfectly on mobile. While I have no idea what is going on with The Label or if they’re even a thing anymore, McMillen did tweet out today a brand new trailer for The Legend of Bum-bo along with a release date for the Steam version.
As you can see, you’ll be able to check out The Legend of Bum-bo for yourself on both PC and Mac through Steam on November 12th, 2019, with the iOS and Nintendo Switch versions coming sometime later. I really love the aesthetic used here and even the somewhat obnoxious but somehow endearing voice of old Bum-bo himself. If there’s even a tenth of the emergent gameplay of The Binding of Isaac here I can see this becoming a huge hit on every platform it’s released on, but especially on mobile. I look forward to seeing more of what The Legend of Bum-bo is all about when it arrives on Steam in November and hopefully the wait isn’t too long before the iOS and Switch versions follow.
