If you’ve been interested in checking out the strategy RPG Demon’s Rise ($7.99) but have been hesitant about dropping the money on it up front, then today (or technically, yesterday) is your lucky day. Developer Wavelight Games have released a brand new free version appropriately called Demon’s Rise Free (Free) which will give you access to the first nine campaign battles for the low, low price of nothing. Then, if you like that initial taste, you can simply unlock the full game through a one-time IAP and have access to the full enchilada. In this case, the full enchilada is a whopping 85 campaign battles of monster slaying fun.

If you’re curious to read up a little more on Demon’s Rise even before checking out the free version, be sure to read Shaun’s full review of the game where he notes that while the game is lacking in design polish, it is more than made up for in fun and variety. Demon’s Rise may have some rough edges, but it’s a damn impressive game for a one man project and as far as I know it’s the only game that lets you play as a walking cannon. Oh, and you may have heard that there’s a sequel, Demon’s Rise 2: Lords of Chaos ($7.99), and if you’ve been on the fence about checking that one out as well then just sit tight as it should be getting its very own free trial version any day now.

These interviews are great. Don't suppose it'll make much difference, but I think I'll go get Vigil now, to nudge it 99p further into profit...
Thanks, OrangutanKungfu! I hope you enjoy the game! Honestly, though, no worries about Vigil RPG being profitable or not. As I discussed with Shaun, Vigil RPG was never really intended to be profitable. I just made the kind of game I wanted to play, and hoped other folks would like it too!
Really enjoying these interviews, Shaun.
It's always interesting to hear how small developers get started, whether they continue in that direction or not.
I wish I had learned programming and coding from such a young age.
There's an interplay between right brain and left brain output in developing games that really intrigues me. It's that combination of pure creativity in making something that has no physical existence whatsoever - whether it's a deep RPG-style world, or an action-based challenge of some sort, or a simple visual experiment, etc. - and then making it function in the very logical and almost mechanical constraints of coding and switches and zeroes and ones. I enjoy engaging in that right/left interplay with the tools I have, whether it's being creative musically and lyrically within a set song structure, or playing with language and imagery and themes within the structure of a story. But the stricter constraints of coding and programming are not something I've ever been involved with, and the possibilities seem so much more unlimited, and that's probably why it seems so mysterious and impressive to me.
It feels like haiku, where you have very precise rules, but you can shape almost anything from it. But it's much more complex and many-layered.
I'm also really pleased with your choices when looking for developers to interview. I'm completely unfamiliar with this game, but that does nothing to diminish my interest.
I'll be looking forward to more of these in the future! Carry on!
My blood type! Agree with everything!
Popup "You just hit enemy for 999 999 999 critical damage" twenty times all over your screen is...just distracting.
I remember, when first Diablo 3 gameplay video went out and small hit text all over the place...just no. I can deal with it way better then when I was young but...
I love old/older games like Heroes of might and magic, where you can compute damage right off the bat. There was huge hole between 2005 - 2012 or so, where big games avoid that almost completely. Then with Legend of Grimrock release I found again my faith in developers (indie to be precise) and come back to full gaming. From that point, I've played planty great games!
100% agree with f2p development Jekyll & Hyde style point of view.
I mentioned that before somewhere, but there is one potential big problem with f2p, which can cause trouble to whole industry.
F2p is more or less addicting slot machine type of gaming. It is GAMBLING!
Once politicians and crowd notice that, there is chance that industry will be victimized as whole! We live in completely different time than around 1980/90, where some politicians tried show games as something responsible for all the evil, but if you ever seen, how small kids reacts if you take them tablet...
Gaming is addicting! By adding such gambling element to it, we are creating complete drug distribution system, "want more, pay more without gap" (accepted one, as alcohol and tabacco)!
Nice RPG Reload as usual! Great format!
Good luck Jonathan
Thanks very much, Michal! I knew there had to be an audience for Vigil RPG's brand of highly "computable" RPG gameplay out there somewhere! :-)
Sure there is.
Vigil RPG is already installed and waiting few hours for a bed time.
Sorry, I will give it a shot once I burn all stamina in Fire Emblem Heroes (6 rounds in the training tower). :)
I hear you! I haven't decided yet whether to spend my feathers on some 3* -> 4* character upgrades, or save up for a single 4* -> 5* upgrade...
