iDracula: New Screens, Gameplay Details

Early this week we posted screenshots and details of Chillingo’s forthcoming iPhone hack-‘n’-slash monster smasher iDracula, developed by the creator of Orions: Legend of Wizards.

It’s a point, shoot and run affair — stop to bag the goodies, guns and power-ups but watch out for the werewolves and other bad guys.

Chillingo has recently tweeted a few updates, including a link to two new in-game screenshots posted to our forums.  The publisher indicates that the game is nearly complete and will be submitted to the App Store “soon, soon!"

Since our original iDracula post, Chillingo has provided us with some additional details of the game.

It’s actually a survival shooter. You begin with a simple gun and slow/weak monsters, and as the time passes, they grow stronger and faster, dropping better weapon. You will also be able to gain “perks", as you earn enough experience. There are 6 different weapons – Gun, Rifle, Crossbow, Grenade Launcher, Machine Gun and BFG (yes, it’s big). We have also implemented a very nice multitouch controls, so you’re like using two sticks to control a hero, and it’s very cool. It is also the most intense game in the appstore.

We’re very anxious to see this lovely looking $0.99 game in action–and judging from our reader’s comments and forum posts, we’re not alone in this.  Stay tuned for a closer look when iDracula goes live.

    Looks really interesting, but there isn't much info on the game :S

    "I don’t see it as a rival for the DS so much but I think the PSP’s days may be numbered."

    Don’t get me wrong the iPhone is great but I hardly think is rivals the PSP. Has this guy seen some of the stuff coming out on the PSP? Have a look at Resistance: Retribution on the PSP or God of War. Furthermore I don’t see hardcore gamers picking up the iPhone to play games. Touch and the accelerometer are cool but sometimes you just want buttons and analog sticks.

    My 2c :-p

    I want to see more strategy games on the iPhone, it's such a great platform for them. Hope this one really shines, the tower defense games are great, but I want more.

    By the time the guys behind Agile Forces get around to releasing their game on the App Store they're going to have lots of competition with this one, it seems. I'm just annoyed that they don't seem to have bothered making any progress on it, whatsoever, since 1.1.3-4.

    I love this type of game but wow this looks like a girl's version. :p

    As soon as I read "Wars" in the title and saw the screens I thought "ADVANCE WARS IPOD VERSION!!" Then I read the article and went :D
    I cannot wait for this game!

  7. Wabaam

    Gonna buy it.

    Damned they made their announce before we did...
    we'll try to make the news and send sreenshots soon

    Finally another turn based strategy game!!! Reign of Swords has good game mechanics, but visuals are bad. Finally i see something that could join the two aspects, a proper Advance Wars type game...

    I just wish Glu Mobile would bring their classic Ancient Empires games to the iphone too...those games were the best java mobile games ever, almost advance wars level, they would really shine on the much better hardware of the iphone

    @alexandre leboucher

    I hope that we don't have to become rivals like you are suggesting.

    I am sure both of our products will have their own audiences.

    This looks great!

    Fantastic. One of the few games on the DS that I always wanted to play was Advance Wars. If this is a well executed take on the genre I'll buy it.

    @luc bernard :
    Don't worry, the gameplay mechanics of our games are both inspired by advance wars, but the styles are extremely differents so it shoudl'nt matter much...
    beside ,we'll have the first two games of this type (along with reign of sword) for the iPhone, so let's say we are going to bring tactical strategy games in the spotlight of the starving iphone crowd:)
    if both games are good we should both benefit from press coverage;)

    Well, I wish you BOTH good luck and I will definitely buy your games if they are as good as or better than (gasp!) Advance Wars.

    P.S. I thought the Destructoid review and its ridiculously low score of 1 out of 10 was a bit unprofessional, too, Luc. But that's what you get in this industry (together with the 10/10's, of course).

  15. Fredde

    I hope it will be a good tactical RPG- like Shining Force one and two for the Genesis or Final Fantasy tactics on the PSX (or the newer Disgaea series)where you follow a good and compelling story line and you really connect with the characters.

    Between this, leboucher's project (@ leboucher: screens soon please :), and Reign of Swords II (which pocketgamer had an announcement for a couple of days ago), it seems the turn based SRPG genre is well covered on the iTouch/Phone platform.

    @ Luc:

    Don't see this platform (it is one platform: the iTouch/Phone run on the same hardware and OS afterall, think of it rather as two different SKUs) as competition for PSP. It's not. PSP is a portable game system, as is DS. They're in the portable game market. This platform is in the mobile market, thus putting it more in competition with BREW, nGage, and other mobile platforms (like PocketPC).

    now, some more RTS games would be nice too...warfare inc is a good example that it can be done, but something with better graphics would be nice

  18. Thaurin

    @antonioj: what about Westward?

  19. Javier

    I'm still waiting for a good squad level turn-based strategy game (X-com please!!!!)

  20. Aaron

    This game looks fantastic, and I've been waiting for an SRPG like AW on my touch. This is a definite buy for me. Any news on game length and any chances of WiFi (not just local) mode incorporation? I'd pay upwards of $35 for a good 20-40 hour game w/ WiFi mode (same as cartridge-based games for other gaming platforms). *drool*

    @alexandre leboucher

    sounds good, actually from seeing 1112 I am really interested to see what kind of art style your game will have

    isn't also weird that we are both french developers :)

  22. alexandre leboucher

    hehe beeing french is not that uncommon you know :)
    there are quite a few frenchies out there wandering in the appstore ...

  23. bwtai

    I'd love to see the super robot war series on the iphone....

  24. Aristarchos

    What happened to this game? Both Touch Arcade and Kotaku implied the game would be out sometime in March, maybe early April. It is now nearing the end of April and the developers website is still under construction. Hope to get news from the developer soon, as I am excited about this one.
