Best iPhone and iPad Games of the Week: 2/20/15 – ‘Auro’ and ‘Alto’s Adventure’

TouchArcade Rating:

It was perhaps a slower-than-normal review week in the world of iOS, but there were definitely a couple of real gems. Here’s the top scoring games of the reviews published this week, in case you missed any of them in the flurry of other news posts and videos in the last seven days:

Auro: Monster Bumping, $1.99 [Review] – The first half of 2014 was pretty packed with roguelikes, with games like Wayward Souls ($7.99), Cardinal Quest 2 (Free), and Hoplite ($3.99) all taking their respective stab at the venerable sub-genre. This year has been a little more quiet on that front, with only a few offerings of any note at all. The best of this year’s bunch until now has been Lamp And Vamp ($1.99) which, while very fun, was riffing pretty closely on Hoplite. Well, mark it on your calendars, friends, because I think we’ve got our first fresh hit of 2015 in the genre with Auro ($1.99), the latest game from the developers behind 100 Rogues ($2.99). This one’s been cooking at Dinofarm Games for quite a long time now, but I think it’s certainly worth the wait.

Alto's Adventure, $4.99 [Review] – Ever since we caught wind of the teaser back in September of last year, Alto’s Adventure ($4.99) has been an intriguing title. The biggest question I had was whether the game’s highly stylistic art style would be able to counterbalance a gameplay system that is essentially standard endless snowboarding fare. For me, I think the excellent visual style and soundtrack make for an experience that’s worth experiencing the otherwise basic endless gameplay.

I've intended to grab this for a while but it slipped my mind, but I just grabbed it and can't wait to check it out. thanks for the heads-up!

      1. vicsark

I just bought it, and it is awesome
I can't believe I missed Battleheart Legacy last year, so many great games on iOS I can't follow everything I guess.
Thks TA for the heads up ;)

        1. Desertking24

More like so many great games that already filled up my iPad and iPod touch

    2. dingdongfootball

Something about it looked really unappealing to me but I picked it up last night due to its shining reviews and everyone was right and I was wrong. It's really great.

    3. Jason

Starts well, but gets way too grindy for my taste.

      1. IAP-king

Same, had to stop playing because of that.

        1. iosuser

Me too, wish they would update the game as I'd be willing to pay for additional content.

    4. Rob Aught

Really got tired of this after awhile but played the hell out of it before I finally walked away. It was a $10 game selling for a $5 price. I still keep it installed because it took a lot of hours of obsessive playing for me to get tired of it.

It might sound like I'm bagging it but I'm not. I got far more than my money's worth out of it and it's one of those games everyone should try at least once. For $2 it's a no-brainer.

    5. sivad

Grabbed it day one and I would do it again in a heartbeat, I can't say enough about the quality of this premium game.... I wish this was a model for all mobile gaming..

    6. Luciano1084

Don't get mad at me guys... But I never could get into this one. In fact, after 10 minutes I stopped playing and basically abandoned the game.. I'm definitely in the minority though 😁😁👾👾

    7. Jetjet

Love this game but a bit disappointed Mika Mobile ends up with 2D games like zombieville or ninjas :(

    8. akrose858

Great game but needs more story. It starts good but then the story basically disappears and you grind forever.

    9. dancj

      I grabbed that this morning.

There seem to be loads of game sales this morning - including Yet it Moves for free. Is today some holiday in America or something?

      1. vicsark

I guess it's some internet celebrity birthday or something :D
One dude that even had a custom Flappy like made just for him ! ;)

        1. dancj

Oh, duh - it's Steve Jobs' 60th. That's probably it.

    10. Heavnsix

I'd like to an update for this game, got it at launch, great game.

    11. PoloBaquerizoH

If you dont have this game yet, you should die , this is a masterpiece

      1. dancj

        That's a bit harsh!

        1. PoloBaquerizoH

:) is just a extreme way to say this game is a gem

          1. Press2Play

            Too extreme dude.

    12. LoneValkyrie

So, I've concluded I am cursed; I bought it full the day before and was literally opening Battleheart Legacy when this touch arcade notification popped up. D'oh! 😁😜

    13. LoneValkyrie

This game is amazing, however horrible my timing is since I picked it up the day before it went on sale... Worth every penny. If you enjoyed the first one, your mind will be blown.

    14. rayray307

Best game on a iPhone ever!

    15. wolpak

Fun game, but not as fun as the first one.

    16. logan067

Does this game have mfi controller support?

    17. Artifex 28

      Highly recommended!

Auro and AG Drive were serious disappointments. This wasn't!

It gets grindy around level 13, but the great character dev. mechanics keep it interesting.

Well worth the 5e, not to mention 2e!

    18. benexclaimed

I love mika but this was a big disappointment. Scrapping the party system resulted in a considerably less fun game. I would've loved the party system of the original + the more open world of the sequel.

    19. Usui

I really enjoyed this game. But I paid full price. You should buy it now, it's worth it.

    20. Jacky Chan

Imagine if they make an online version of this and make it play like Diablo 2 it will make banks.

    21. mateo277

Bought it upon release, besides the grind after lvl 15 it's a wonderful experience. Buy it at this price and enjoy.
