Developer The Gentlebros. released the original Cat Quest way back in August of 2017, and it was a game we had been eyeing for more than a year at that point and were incredibly excited for. In short, it did not disappoint. This was a streamlined action RPG stuffed with deceptively strategic combat and more cat puns than you could shake your whiskers at, and we chose it as our Game of the Week and gave it 5 stars in our review back then. So naturally when a sequel was announced in May of 2018, we were incredibly excited for that one as well. After following its development like hawks we learned prior to its September 2019 release that Cat Quest II would be a launch title for the Apple Arcade service, something I predicted would happen. Don’t mind me tooting my own horn for a minute. This follow-up was also great, improving on the original in many ways and delivering even more cat puns. Both Cat Quest games would make their way to various consoles and PC platforms, and the series as a whole has really blossomed into a major player outside of the mobile gaming bubble. Now this week a third game has been announced called Cat Quest: Pirates of the Purribean, and you can see it in all its swashbuckling glory in the following trailer.
As you can see, this is very much in the same vein as the previous Cat Quest games where you’ll be exploring a large overworld map and engaging in real-time hack ‘n slash battles, then diving into various dungeons and towns completing missions and collecting treasures. However, this time around a main focus will be your pirate ship which you can equip and customize with all sorts of goodies and allows you to zip in between the different islands in the overworld as well as partake in water-based battling. The game also boasts a “newly refined combat system" and “a litany of new weapons and spells to get your paws on" combined with a new weapon-swapping mechanic giving you the ability to create all sorts of cool combos using different attacks. Oh, and of course there are more cat puns. Somehow these guys haven’t run out of cat puns yet. Cat Quest: Pirates of the Purribean is slated for a 2024 release across PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC via Steam and as confirmed on the Gentlebros Twitter account it’ll arrive on mobile at some point down the line as well.
