Best iPhone Game Updates: ‘Fire Emblem Heroes’, ‘The Oregon Trail’, ‘Subway Surfers’, ‘Clap Hanz Golf’, and More

TouchArcade Rating:

Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. It’s a blend of the usual suspects and some Apple Arcade titles this time around, with plenty of exciting updates to get your week started off on the right foot. Maybe! I can’t make any promises about effects or results, as I am neither a doctor nor a ninja. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s go for it!

Fire Emblem Heroes, Free Ooh, it’s new story content time. Significant new story time, no less. Chapter 8 has been added to the game, officially kicking off the second half of Book V. To commemorate that occasion, a new movie has been added. And that seems to be the extent of this month’s update, but there’s nothing wrong with a bit of eye candy to liven up those simple battle graphics along with some new levels to play.

Disney Magic Kingdoms, Free So much going on right now that devs have trouble picking which event or holiday to tie in with. Disney Magic Kingdoms is going for World Ocean Day, it seems. It’s using it as a reason to pull out the Finding Nemo/Dory gang. Destiny, the whale shark from Finding Dory, is challenging Nemo, Squirt, and Dory to dig up the best marine life facts they can. Besides Destiny, Bailey the Beluga also makes an appearance. Well, that all seems rather appropriate for World Ocean Day.

Toon Blast, Free No specific real-world event involved with this update, but perhaps that’s to be expected from this regular guest in the obligatory free-to-play update chair. Strangely, it’s opting to have a college-themed update. To celebrate the end of the semester, maybe? I don’t know. What I do know is that you’re getting fifty more levels to play. Like always, but perhaps with more keg parties? Bruno Bear getting absolutely wasted on Jagermeister shots and yakking all over the passenger side of Cooper Cat’s car. Now that would be entertaining.

Subway Surfers, Free A fair bit going on in this latest update for Subway Surfers. First of all, they’ve headed to a new location. It’s a historical one this time: the ancient city of Chang’an. I’m 85% sure they didn’t have subways in the eighth century, but these are video games so we can do whatever we want. Race through the streets on mythical dragon boards and take in all of the sights. The other part of this update involves Pride Month, with colorful new Pride outfits for the Festive crew. Join forces with the new Pridebot and collect tokens in the Season Hunt to get some extra goodies.

Star Traders: Frontiers, $6.99 Star Traders: Frontiers had a couple of updates in the last week, one a lot bigger than the other. The earlier one adds the new Shock Trooper profession, along with new unique Traits to go with it. You’ll have have the Heir Apparent unlock to use it, though. That first update also made some text fixes and some small improvements to the UI. The second update just fixed a couple of bugs, but those are important improvements too. More good work from some of the hardest-working devs I know.

MARVEL Realm of Champions, Free A futuristic member of the Spider-Man faction, Web Warrior 2099, makes an arrival in this update to Marvel Realm of Champions. Web Warrior 2099 has come from the future to warn everyone about the dark path they’re on. Some new Spider-Guild equipment comes with him, including a gear set themed around Spider-Man 2099. There is also some new Kingdom of Wakanda equipment, new Synergy Passives for Storm and Iron Legionnaire, and a bunch of bug fixes and improvements to various elements of the game. Hmm, that’s a lot of Spider-Man.

The Oregon Trail, Wowza, this is a big-pants update. There are three new quests to play in The Oregon Trail, The Nature Trail, and the Oregon or Bust Journeys. From reuniting the Oregon Dragoons to putting together a band, there’s some cool stuff to keep you busy. The tutorial got a big update, twelve new achievements have been added, the guidebook has been expanded, a ton of balance adjustments have been made, and some new events have been created to keep things fresh on replays. Top it off with tons of bug fixes, text adjustments, performance enhancements, and improved distribution of existing events, and you’ve got an update worthy of a coveted UMMSotW award.

LEGO® Brawls, I remember when LEGO was a nice, peaceful brand. Now we’re just brawling all day long, even going so far as to have a new season where the favorite themes are battling it out to see who is the greatest. There are new mashup levels featuring rivalries between some of the all-time classic LEGO themes, a new Gold Rush mode where you’ll get rich or get disassembled trying, some new items from eight different themes, and some of the usual back-end fixes and improvements. Which will be victorious? I mean, medieval, obviously.

Slash Quest!, I don’t know an awful lot about this game, but I saw it got an update and figured the folks at Noodlecake could use some love. Curiously, they’ve gone for a sports theme for Season 2. Sure, why not? You get eleven new challenges to tackle, six exclusive outfits to wear, and three new trails. Apparently you need to talk to the Taskmaster in the camp to find out the details, so go and do that. Should be a good time.

Easy Come Easy Golf, The best golf game on iOS keeps on getting better with this update. This latest version adds a World Tournament, some new rules, more playable characters, fresh new costumes and colors, a new caddie, and some expansions to Tour Mode, Survival Mode, and Score Attack Mode. It also brings in native support for Apple M1 and fixes up a bunch of bugs. I’m glad to see this is going well for Clap Hanz, I’ve always enjoyed the Hot Shots Golf games they made and was sad to see the series disappear.

That about wraps it up for last week’s significant updates. I’m sure I’ve missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates will likely get their own news stories throughout this week, and I’ll be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week!
