SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Star Wars Republic Commando’ Mini-View, ‘Poison Control’ Releases, Plus the Latest Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for April 13th, 2021. A little of a quiet one today, but we’ve got a Mini-View of Star Wars Republic Commando, a summary of today’s sole new release Poison Control, and the usual lists of incoming and outgoing sales. There are a bunch of Resident Evil games on sale, if you’re interested in any of them and somehow haven’t picked them up yet. Well, let’s get to work!

Mini-Views

Star Wars Republic Commando ($14.99)

Star Wars Republic Commando is a great game. One of the best Star Wars games, easily sitting up there with the likes of Knights of the Old Republic, Rogue Leader, and Tie Fighter. You’re leader of an elite squad of Clone Troopers and need to use the unique talents of your team to complete a series of missions for the Republic. The gameplay is excellent, with the AI of your compatriots being good enough to almost mistake for real players. Like most of the best Star Wars games and even many of the worst, a big part of the fun is showing you a side of the universe that the movies couldn’t afford to. Certainly one of the more memorable pieces of media connected to the Prequel Trilogy. It’s worth playing, and even if you’ve already played it, it’s worth revisiting.

The question is whether or not you should do that via this Switch port. I’ll be frank: this is a rough port. That’s probably not a massive surprise to anyone who has played any of Aspyr’s previous ports to the system, but this is the most troubled yet. I think we’re all used to lengthy loading times, and those are here. There are also frequent moments where the game outright stops to do some loading in the middle of the action. The framerate dips wildly depending on the on-screen action. Like, it’s pretty bad. Aspyr is apparently investigating this and their history tells me the company will fix it if it can, but I can’t review hypotheticals. This is a rough port of an excellent game, and while you can still enjoy it in this form, it’s probably the absolute worst way to do so.

SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

New Releases

Poison Control ($39.99)

NISA’s latest release comes from the same developer as Penny-Punching Princess. It’s kind of a third-person shooting game, but also a cleaning game. The action is a bit rough, but it’s playable enough. The story is quite interesting. You find yourself as a new resident of Hell who has to work with a mysterious young woman to try to get a wish granted and perhaps go back to the world of the living. You do that by purging the poison from the minds of people in the living world who are struggling with a variety of problems. I’ll have a review of this one, but I’d say the story is the best part of it so far. Which isn’t too far from the norm for NISA’s smaller projects, when you think about it.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Nothing incredibly rare in today’s list of new sales, but there are certainly some fine games to consider if you haven’t grabbed them in any previous sales. Capcom’s got the whole line of Resident Evil games discounted, and it’s hard to go wrong with any of them. Well, maybe Resident Evil 6. The Metro Redux games are excellent, and less than half-price. Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 and Jurassic World Evolution are nifty sims, and Lair of the Clockwork God is a whole lot of game for a low price. There’s plenty in the outbox, too. Dicey Dungeons is a great choice. WB Games go on sale fairly often, but if you want to sup at the table, don’t let me stop you. Well, have a good look as always.

Should be an interesting one ahead of the big Thursday releases, at the very least. Anyway, I hope you all have a great Tuesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
