Over the weekend, Square Enix announced a remaster of the original PlayStation classic in the form of SaGa Frontier Remastered for iOS, Android, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. SaGa Frontier Remastered is a remaster of SaGa Frontier that released back in 1997 in Japan and 1998 in North America on PlayStation. This was the first game released using the SaGa name in North America as well. Over the years, Square Enix has brought multiple SaGa games to iOS and Android in the form of SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions ($29.99), Romancing SaGa 3 ($21.99), and Romancing SaGa 2 ($17.99). Square Enix clearly is confident in the games for the West because we even got the free to play Romancing SaGa Re;Universe localised recently. I got into the SaGa games through these new releases so I’m excited to check out SaGa Frontier Remastered with its turn-based combat and great music. Watch the announcement trailer for SaGa Frontier Remastered below:
SaGa Frontier Remastered also includes Fuse as an added playable character, new events, upgraded graphics, and more. As with other SaGa games, expect more freedom than usual in JRPGs with different endings for the playable characters. While I am pleased to be able to experience this on a modern platform next year, I’m hoping the visuals aren’t too inconsistent. It would be amazing if Square Enix allowed for a classic look during gameplay rather than the smoothed visuals in the trailer above.
Usually, Square Enix announces these ports or remakes just for Japan and the West has to wait months for a localisation announcement. For SaGa Frontier Remastered, the English trailer was released soon after the Japanese announcement. SaGa Frontier Remastered is set for release in Summer 2021. Until then, you can get SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions, Romancing SaGa 3, and Romancing SaGa 2 on the App Store and Google Play. SaGa Frontier Remastered is in development for iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC platforms. What is your favourite SaGa game?
