SwitchArcade Round-Up: Huge ‘Super Mario Maker 2’ Update Coming Tomorrow, ‘Hatsune Miku’ Western Release Set for May, and More

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for April 21st, 2020. In today’s article, we’ve got some awesome news to cover. That includes a phenomenal Mario Maker 2 update, a Western release date for Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix, and a brand new event for Tetris 99. We’ve also got a summary of today’s sole new release, and a big list of sales with a few very nice gems in it. Let’s get to it!

News

‘Super Mario Maker 2’ Gets One Last Big Update Tomorrow

The update schedule for Mario Maker 2 has been a bit underwhelming when compared to that of the Wii U original. In fact, this is only the second major update to the game. And guess what? It’s apparently the last one! While we may see some minor updates here and there in the future, this is going to be the final big drop. The good news? This update reads like a massive list of wishes being granted. Super Mario Bros. 2 stuff? Yes, albeit only through a power-up mushroom and a few new items and enemies. Extra suits? You get the Frog Suit, the P-Balloon, the Acorn Suit, the Boomerang Suit, and some interesting new ones. The Koopalings? They’re all here!

But the biggest of all: you can now make your own full game, complete with overworld map and multiple themes for worlds. You can build up to 8 worlds with 40 levels. That’s not quite as big as later 2D Mario games, but hey, it’s awesome anyway. There are some other goodies in this update, but those are the high points. This update is scheduled to hit… tomorrow! Wow, that’s pretty cool. I can’t wait to see what the many clever creators in this game’s community come up with now that they can build series of stages. Maybe… maybe Shaun can make a game? Ha ha, just kidding. Unless

‘Ring Fit Adventure’ Event Comes to ‘Tetris 99’

It’s been a while since the last Tetris 99 Maximus Cup, which happened in January. It’s been even longer since the last Maximus Cup that offered a new theme. That one was in November, when a Pokemon theme was up for grabs. Well, we’re back to business again this weekend. The 12th Maximus Cup event is patterned after the ever-elusive Ring Fit Adventure, and as with other similar events you need to try to earn 100 points before the event is over to permanently unlock the special theme. As you can see from the promotional image, the event starts on Friday at 12:00 AM PT and runs through 11:59 PM PT on Monday. That’s plenty of time to get the new theme even if you’re as lousy at the game as I am.

‘Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix’ Arrives in the West May 15th

Hatsune Miku isn’t just one of the most famous fictional musicians in the world. She’s also the star of a really great series of rhythm games, the latest of which hit the Switch in Japan a couple of months back. SEGA of America has announced a Western release date of May 15th for the new game, titled Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix. It will be available in two packages: a base version for $39.39 (in Japanese that price could be pronounced ‘Mi-ku Mi-ku‘) and a $59.99 Mega Pack that includes six DLC song packs that total up to 36 additional songs. Oh, and there’s a demo for the game so you can try it out yourself and see how you like it. That demo is available… right about now.

New Releases

Help Will Come Tomorrow ($19.99)

Whatever you end up feeling about Help Will Come Tomorrow, you have to at least admit that the premise is intriguing. The setting is Russia in October of 2017. A train making its way through Siberia is attacked, leaving four survivors stranded in the hostile wilderness. They need to stay alive long enough for help to arrive, and your job is to help them do that. You’ll need to take care of their essential needs but also manage the morale of the little group. There are a lot of dangers surround you, both natural and man-made. To tell the truth, you can tell that this game was designed for a computer interface as its UI really doesn’t work well with the Switch’s controls. If you can get around that, you’ll find a rather cool survival story here.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

There are a lot of new discounts today, but a huge chunk of the list is pure dreck. The biggest highlights are the absolutely wild prices on Celeste and TowerFall, both excellent games that are worth way more than the fiver being asked for at the moment. Puzzle Quest: The Legend Returns and SuperEpic: The Entertainment War are also pretty awesome if you’re hunting for something else to pick up. The outbox doesn’t have too much going on that you should worry about, but you should absolutely grab Invisigun Reloaded while it’s only a buck. It’s not likely to hit that price again soon.

That’s all that’s good for today, friends. Tomorrow has a couple of new releases on the schedule, and we’ll be taking a look at those as usual. There should also be a little bit of news and some new sales to dig into as well. If things end up being a bit light, I do have a couple of Mini-Views I could probably throw in there. We’ll have to see how it goes. I hope you all have a good Tuesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
