The Angry Birds Movie 2 Trailer Has Arrived, Hits Theaters on August 14th

The whole Angry Birds Movie thing has a pretty crazy history, if you ask me. Going all the way back to the spring of 2011, the folks at Rooster Teeth, who most people know as the creators of the Halo machinima Red vs. Blue, created a parody video imagining what an Angry Birds movie would be like… if it was directed by Michael Bay. I still think that video is hilarious. Even more hilarious was that just a few months later Rovio began hinting that an Angry Birds movie might actually become a reality. You have to understand that at this time the Angry Birds marketing machine was set to full speed, and you couldn’t walk into any Target or Walmart without being bombarded with Angry Bird merchandise of all shapes and sizes. I think it’s safe to say we were all kind of suffering from Angry Birds fatigue at that point, so it was hard to greet the prospect of a movie with anything other than a massive groan.

However, whether intended or not, an actual Angry Birds movie wouldn’t hit theaters until the spring of 2016, about five years after those initial rumors. By that time, at least for me personally, I was much less hostile to the Angry Birds hype, and being that what ended up as the first official movie (which was very cleverly titled The Angry Birds Movie /sarcasm) featured a ton of actors I loved, I was no longer mad at all that it was a thing that existed. Now I have to be honest and say I never actually SAW The Angry Birds Movie myself, but I’ve heard nothing but good things about it and I’ve been meaning to actually see it for, oh, I guess going on three years now. Maybe I’ll get around to that this weekend. Anyway, a sequel is getting ready to release, featuring the similarly clever title The Angry Birds Movie 2, and its trailer is rather entertaining.

That there’s a sequel to the first Angry Birds Movie isn’t a surprise, as Rovio announced their intentions to create one just a few months after the original movie hit theaters. They even predicted the release date of September 20th, 2019 more than two years ago! That doesn’t mean a whole lot as The Angry Birds Movie 2 is actually releasing on August 14th, but darn it all if they weren’t pretty close! That’s an A for effort right there. Going back and watching the first and second trailers for the first movie have reignited my interest in seeing it, so I guess I have until August 14th to make that happen if I want to be ready to see The Angry Birds Movie 2 when it hits theaters later this summer. I’ll let you know if I reach that goal! But what say you, readers? Did you enjoy the first movie, and will you be seeing the sequel?
