Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for May 22nd, 2019. It’s the middle of the week and on the one hand that means that new releases and new sales are largely scarce. On the other hand, it also means that we have some interesting news to check out. And it’s not like there are no new releases. Why, there are two very defensible new games out today. You’ll also want to check the massive list of sales ending soon to make sure you grabbed everything you wanted. Let’s go for broke!
News
‘Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons’ Hits Switch Next Week with New Co-Op Mode
The innovative action/adventure game Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons will be coming to the Switch really soon. Like, “next week" soon. It’ll be coming May 28th at a price of $14.99, and like many games there is a discount if you pre-order it. So what’s new in this version? One cool thing is that you can play the game with a second player controlling the other brother. It kind of messes with the narrative point, but oh well, it’s fun. This version of the game also includes a director’s commentary. Honestly, I’m not a huge fan of this one for reasons I went into when I reviewed the mobile version, but lots of people think very highly of it so you may want to check it out anyway.
‘Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution’ Heads West this August
Konami has significantly scaled back its game development, but its more reliable moneymakers are still doing the rounds. And one of those is Yu-Gi-Oh!, a card game that people pegged as a fad back when it launched something like two decades ago. The latest video game version of the card game, Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution, will be making its way to the West in the late summer. Specifically, August 20th. You can buy it digitally of course, but if you pre-order the physical version you can apparently get a few cards for the actual physical card game. It looks like it does what it sets out to do, allowing you to play through a story mode or battle against other human players with over 9000 cards available.
The Excellent ‘A Robot Named Fight’ Gets a Big Update This Friday
If you love Super Metroid and you’ve never played A Robot Named Fight, you really need to do something about that. It marries roguelike elements to a game that plays a lot like Super Metroid to create something that absolutely shouldn’t work and yet does. A new update is due later this week, adding a new area, new enemies, some new items, and a robot dog sidekick named Up Dog. The new version will also generate maps differently to reduce repetition and predictability. All very good stuff. To go with the update, the game will be going on sale from May 24th to June 3rd. You’ll be able to grab the game at a 40% discount, so if you haven’t picked it up yet, maybe wait a couple of days.
The Latest ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ Event is Taking it Easy
Yes, it is Wednesday once again. And in addition to it being the midpoint of the week, it’s also when we get information on the latest Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Spirit Board event. Wouldn’t you know it? Here it is! The theme this time is Spirit Shield Slowdown. Rather than having certain spirits appear more often, this one sees the roulette at the end of battles move more slowly, making it easier to choose when to stop it. You’ll earn three times the amount of Spirit Points during this event as well. Like always, this event kicks off this Friday and runs through the weekend.
New Releases
Gunlord X ($9.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
Gunlord has a bit of an odd history. Technically, this is an enhanced version of a game that released on the NEOGEO and Dreamcast. But don’t go rifling through your childhood memories trying to find this game. I mean, I guess if you’re in high school you could. But this was one of those indie games that released on those platforms long after they had passed from the market, so if you don’t know it, don’t worry. Anyway, this is a really cool run-and-gun game in the vein of stuff like Turrican and Contra. I haven’t played this new version, but I did play the original and it was definitely a lot of fun. I expect this will not be different in that regard.
The Last Door – Complete Edition ($14.99)
This is an atmospheric horror adventure game that originally released in a chapter-based format on mobile. It contains all eight episodes as any good Complete Edition should. I don’t know. If you want my honest opinion, I was never all that fussed about The Last Door. It’s okay, and it sets its mood well, but as an overall experience I found that it was pretty good at the start and just went downhill from there. That said, I know a ton of people that really like this, so don’t just take my word on it. And while it’s more expensive here than it is on mobile, it’s cheaper on Switch than it is on Steam. So I suppose that all balances out. Anyway, if you’re looking for some kind of adventure game and are into Lovecraft-style settings, you could probably do a lot worse than this.
Sales
Woo, check out those new sales! Okay, by the time you read this I’m sure more sales will have kicked off, but as I write this we’ve got just a few new discounts, and none of them are very exciting. Now, the outbox is a different story. Tons of sales are ending tomorrow, and I can’t possibly highlight everything worthwhile. So I’ll just point at a few: Bastion, Okami HD, Guacamelee! 2, The Messenger, Minecraft, Owlboy, SteamWorld Di… you know what? This isn’t working. Just go through the list. You could fill a year’s worth of backlog with the number of great games on discount and still have more to buy. Have fun making those hard choices!

And if all is quiet, there could be a review. Stranger things have happened! As always, thanks for reading!
