One of this year’s best puzzle games (and best games in general) was Tiny Bubbles ($3.99) from Pine Street Codeworks, a game that was largely the years-in-the-making passion project of developer Stu Denman. But it wasn’t strictly a solo effort, and now one of the puzzle designers who worked on Tiny Bubbles, James Hutt, is bringing his own creation to the App Store. It’s called Triangul8, and it’s a two-player turn-based game that feels like a mashup of the classics Tic-Tac-Toe and Connect Four. Basically the game starts out with a single red triangle and each player takes turns placing one of their own colored triangles onto the board with the ultimate goal of creating a triangle of any size that features that player’s triangles (which can include the starting red triangle) as the three points. It’s a bit complicated to explain, but this short video makes Triangul8 easy to understand, and that video is followed by the game’s official trailer.
So as you can see, Triangul8 might sound like a complicated game but it’s actually devilishly simple. I’m really impressed that I haven’t seen this particular game design before. As you can also see, the game translates quite easily to physical form, and you can already buy a physical version of Triangul8 on the game’s website. The digital version is slated for both iOS and Android with a release planned for December, but if you’re on Android the game is actually in open beta on the Google Play Store right now. I love the simplicity of Triangul8 and can see it becoming quite a perfect fit for mobile when it releases later this year.
