Traditional racing games are one of the best fits for mobile, but ironically it seems like the racing genre is the one that’s seen the most outside the box innovation over the years. Whether it’s a game like Impossible Road that takes the basic viewpoint of a racing game and delivers something entirely different, or a game like Disc Drivin 2 that offers a slick implementation of turn-based multiplayer racing, or most recently a game like Motorsport Manager Mobile 3 that allows you to control all the aspects of professional racing besides the actual racing part, mobile has seen its fair share of truly unique takes on the racing genre. And there are MANY more examples. Travian Games hopes to put their own stamp on the genre with their upcoming game Hyperdrome, which is described as a “Tactical Battle Racing" game. This video briefly explains what it’s all about.
Like the Motorsport Manager games, you’re not directly controlling your car in Hyperdrome as you’d be in a normal racing game. Rather you’re choosing a set of different power-ups and abilities that you can trigger while the race happens automatically onscreen, hoping to use those abilities strategically to help you gain the advantage and ultimately win the race. As Travian further describes, “Players from all around the world will compete head-to-head on a single cross-platform server. The winner is quickly decided in thrilling 1v1 races; players have just five rounds to put their tactics and skills to the test against their opponents." It all sounds really cool, and if you’re an Android user you can actually take Hyperdrome for an early spin as part of an open bet on the Google Play Store. For iOS users the game should be launching globally on both platforms later this year, and you can find some more information as well as pre-register for the game by checking out the official website.
