Ankama’s ‘Cosmobot’ Soft Launches in Australia, Canada, Singapore

TouchArcade Rating:

Ankama Mobile already has a diverse portfolio of games (including Drag’n Boom (Free), Tactile Wars (Free), and WAFKU: The Brotherhood (Free)), and if you’re in one of a handful of countries, its next title is available for you now! Cosmobot (Free) soft launched today in Australia, Canada, and Singapore. Using a single finger, you fly drones through outer space, using gravity to your advantage. Prepare for takeoff!

Cosmobot is set in a time where the costs associated with human space travel have become astronomical; the result is that we now send drones into the universe instead. The game puts you in the captain’s seat (or is it captain’s controller?) For many of those drones. You’ll have to stay in touch with Megan the surly mechanic while controlling the cutting-edge space drone technology that’s been put in your capable hands.

The goal is to get the drones as far into distant space as you possibly can, but the farther you go the more dangerous it gets. Hyperjump from planet to planet, avoiding scary space objects and collecting coins along the way. Gravity is perhaps your most important tool, as it pulls your drones towards the planets – or possibly into the path of danger, depending on the planet.

I expect a lot of fun will come from comparing Cosmobot scores with those of your friends, especially if you’re as competitive as I am. Despite that, the rhythm of jumping from planet to planet, spinning endlessly can be somewhat calming. See what I mean about the rhythm in this gameplay teaser:

There are ways to upgrade your drones’ components via a workshop, where you spend in-game coins gained by playing levels to do things such as fill your reactor gauge more quickly or increasing your energy reserve. Power-ups are available by progressing through Cosmobot‘s levels. There is also a mystery box but for now that will remain, well, a mystery.

The full launch of Cosmobot is expected next month, exclusively on iOS. The game is free with an in-app purchases for an Ad Jammer, a Golden Hen, and a Mega Mystery Box; those three items currently cost $19.99 CDN each. If you can’t wait until September, you may want to try out Drag’n Boom.
