It may have only been a week since we heard the awesome news that The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth has finally been approved by Apple and would hit the App Store ‘very soon’, but that hasn’t stopped excited fans speculating about numerous aspects of the game. The biggest question has unsurprisingly been how soon is ‘very soon’, and when would we see the critically acclaimed dual stick roguelike hit the App Store, with some even hoping for a surprise launch this Thursday. However, earlier this morning Nicalis founder and The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth producer Tyrone Rodriguez posted on his Twitter account a request for iOS 8 and 9 players to beta test the game, which means that while the game is extremely close, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to play The Binding of Isaac on your phone this week (unless you are on these previous software updates, in which case apply for the beta here).
Of course, this news is by no means a guarantee that the game is close to release – after the turbulent approval process, who knows what surprises could disrupt Edward McMillen’s cult classic from hitting the smaller screen – but needing testers to try The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth on some older versions of iOS is likely more for compatibility purposes, and suggests the bulk of the game is tied up and ready to launch on the iPhone after a nearly a year of being stuck in App Store purgatory. Even if my boundless optimism is misplaced and The Binding of Isaac is further away than such news suggests, a few extra weeks is nothing in the grand scheme of things, and even though I own the game on at least two other platforms already, I cannot wait to slay some hideous monsters on the go.
