Hello, gentle listeners! This month we’ve got an exciting episode of the RPG Reload Podcast for you, as it happened to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the featured game, Dragon Quest ($2.99). Eric Ford and Andy Fretz spent the last month playing through one of the most important JRPGs in history for the very first time, while I replayed it for… well, let’s not count, okay? By now, regular readers and listeners probably know that I still think highly of the game, but how did it turn out for my co-hosts, who don’t have the benefit of nostalgia? You’ll just have to listen and see.
While Dragon Quest takes up the bulk of the talk this time around, we discuss plenty of other games, too. There’s a little Romancing SaGa 2 ($17.99), some Castles Of Mad King Ludwig ($7.99), and… Overwatch? Hm, that might be pushing the RPG tag, but hey, conversations go where they’re going to. Aside from the game talk, we’ve got Andy taking on a new superhero identity, and some shocking revelations about Eric’s past. Plus, I was ludicrously tired while we were recording this episode, which makes for some interesting results.
In addition to our oh-so-nice theme song by Sweet Diss And The Comebacks, the two pieces of music featured on this episode both come from the Dragon Quest soundtrack. On the break, you can hear a selection from the well-known Overture, featured in every game in the series. At the end, we’ve got the rather appropriate Finale. Both pieces were composed by Koichi Sugiyama and are available on the Japanese iTunes store, but not the American one. What’s up with that, Square Enix? Make it rain for everyone!
In the next episode, we’ll be talking about Banner Saga ($9.99). Feel free to play along at home if you’re that-way inclined. If you have any questions related to that game or any other RPG, or just want to give some feedback, you can drop an email to [email protected]. On behalf of Eric, Andy, and myself, I hope you all enjoy this month’s episode. Thanks for listening!
