Sometimes You Die ($1.99) was released on the App Store in April of last year, and playing through it is still one of the more memorable experiences I’ve had in iOS gaming. We posted a review of it, but the gist of the game is that it uses death as a gameplay mechanic. In its most basic form, you might come across a pit of spikes that’s too wide to jump, but if you jump in the middle, and die, the next time around you’ll be able to use your corpse as a platform to jump across.
The rest of the game goes along like that, utilizing death in increasingly clever ways. Really my only complaint about the game is that at times it’s a little too on the nose when it comes to being another typical indie game trying to make a statement (You’ll see what I mean when you play it), but, whatever. Here’s the trailer:
If you don’t own Sometimes You Die already, you should totally grab it while it’s free. It’s hard to talk much about the game without getting into spoiler territory, but snag it, and give it a half hour. You’ll either love it and be telling your friends about it by then, or just hate it and will have deleted it. Personally, I’m (obviously) in the first grouping there.
(Also our pricing data on TouchArcade is a little delayed thanks to how the Apple API works. Disregard the pricing here if it hasn’t updated to free yet, the game just changed price.)
