If you’re a fan of quirky adventure games, chances are good that you’re familiar with Phoenix Wright and his friends. After spending a few years as a Japan-exclusive series on the Game Boy Advance, the series made the jump to the rest of the world on the Nintendo DS, before being ported around to various other platforms. The main series continues to live on Nintendo’s handheld, but iOS gamers have been treated to pretty good ports of many of the titles. Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright Trilogy HD (Free) is a nice collection of the first three games in the series, and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies ($0.99) is a solid port of the latest game in the franchise to leave Japan’s shores.
Both of the games are available as a free download, with IAPs to unlock the games contained within. That’s fine, but it makes it pretty hard to spot it when they go on sale. Luckily, the ever-watchful members of the TouchArcade forums are always on duty. Thanks to them, I can now tell all of you that the IAP unlocks for both Ace Attorney games are currently on sale. The individual unlocks in the Trilogy seem to be at their regular prices, but the IAP that unlocks all three games is currently on for $7.99, which makes each game a measly few bucks. The App Store description says that functionality isn’t guaranteed on iOS 8 and up, but from my own experience and what I’ve heard from others, it seems to be fine on both iOS 8 and iOS 9. Still, buy with caution, I suppose.
Dual Destinies, on the other hand, definitely works on iOS 8, though its description warns about iOS 9 compatibility issues. Yeesh, this has almost as many turns as one of the cases in the games. Its full unlock is on sale for $8.99, which is a great price. The only worry here is whether or not Capcom intends to update the game. I’d like to think they will, but the situation with Ghost Trick certainly makes me nervous about that kind of thing. Still, if you’re willing to throw in a little money on a gamble, both games are more than worth the current asking price.
