When Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition ($4.99) first launched on the App Store, internet comedy kings had a field day with the fact that at the time it was iPad only… And really, the only way you’re fitting an iPad in your pocket was if you were a bad enough dude to rock Jnco jeans. (I mean, they are coming back, after all.) Klei has been teasing that it’s also coming to iPhone as well, and early this morning that universal update finally hit the App Store.

Klei Entertainment’s Don’t Starve is a survival game with a lot in common with Minecraft in terms of gameplay, but at the same time it also manages to draw its own path because of its amazing art style and its uncompromising and challenging design that pushes players into moments of desperation punctuated by brief moments of triumph. The control scheme, oddly enough, translates quite well to the iPhone as well. I feel like the best experience is going to be had on the iPhone 6 Plus, but it’s not at all bad on the iPhone 6. All those tiny buttons zoom in when you touch them sort of like dock magnification in OS X. What I originally assumed would be tiny button hell turned out to be… Not so bad at all. Here’s how it all works, so the top screenshot is what the interface looks like normally, and the bottom one is what happens when you touch the toolbar on the bottom (which then can be scrolled right or left by dragging):

Oh, better yet, the game has iCloud support too and seamlessly pulled in my saved games from my iPad. The universal update for Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition is about as good of an update as we could have ever expected for the game. Definitely give it a look if you’re even vaguely interested in the whole survival/crafting thing.
