Sick of Games Dying After a Year? ‘Cube Runner’ is Still Getting Updated 7 Years Later

TouchArcade Rating:

We live in an era on the App Store where games like BioShock ($9.99) and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite ($14.99) are in shaky update and compatibility situations only a year after release. And there are plenty of indie games that have become lost and forgotten as iOS breaks them. But then there is Cube Runner (Free). This game first came out in 2008, back in the early days of the App Store. It’s not the prettiest game. And yet, this game is still getting updated. Cube Runner has just been updated by developer Andy Qua with iOS 9 support, and even some bug tweaks and fixes to the game.

Cube Runner

I know that Cube Runner, with its spartan visuals and simple gameplay is probably still easier to update than the big projects that I mentioned earlier. But still, it kind of puts it into perspective. There are publishers who won’t update their games a year after they release. There are indies who will update their games long after it would be reasonable for anyone to still expect support for them. Why? Because they do it for the love and respect for their projects and the people who play their games. In a world where it feels like bean counters at multinational corporations will throw away customer goodwill because it’s too expensive to update a game, even with in a reasonable time frame, I’m glad people like Andy Qua exist.

Thanks to Jamie Hargreaves for the tip!
